The country has a population of around 47 million people. The language most spoken in Spain in Spanish. Many people around the world also speak Spanish due to the early influence of the Spanish Empire. The currency used in Spain is the Euro which replaced the Spanish Peseta in 2002. The current flag of Spain has three horizontal bands. The top and bottom bands take up one-quarter each of the flag and are colored red. The center band is golden yellow in color. Just off center is the Spanish coat of arms. The current flag was adopted on the 6th December, 1978, though before that, the flag design had been changed many times over the years. The largest religion in Spain is Catholic, though only many Spaniards don’t consider religion as very important. The government of Spain is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy based on the Spanish Constitution. The government has three branches: executive, legislative and judicial. The head of state is the King, but the actual leader of the government is the prime minister. Simple Living. Creative Learning ! Spain The Spanish (flamenco) guitar is usually made from cypress and spruce. This guitar has a bright tone. The action on a flamenco guitar is much lower, so the player can move quickly onto the fretboard on which they play runs on. The top of a flamenco guitar is also often thinner as is the wood on the back and sides of the guitar. This helps with more projection of sound. Castanets are a percussion instrument that consists of a pair of concave shells joined on one edge by a string. They are held in the hand and produce clicks for rhythmic accents. They are usually used in the Spanish folk dance known as ‘Sevillanas’. The Flamenco is a dance that is used for special festivities. During this dance, you will hear acoustic guitar music, singing, hand claps, heel stamps and sometimes castanets. This dance has no set tempo, including both fast and slow passages, usually rising to a climax near the end. Bull fighting is a sport that has been part of the Spanish culture, dating back to the 1600s. Brave matadors fight bulls that weigh about 500kg or 1,100 pounds each. The matador wears a highly decorated costume of tight, embroidered pants, a short jacket and a highly embroidered shirt as well as a hat, stockings and slippers. The Sagrada Familia is a large, unfinished Roman Catholic temple in Barcelona. Construction began is 1882 and is estimated to be completed in 2026. The architect Antoni Gaudi died in 1926, when only a quarter of the project had been completed. Over the years, 9 architects have taken on the project, only to walk away due to numerous obstacles. Once completed, it will be the tallest church in the world. Paella is made in an iron pan called a paellera,, which is a large, round shallow dish with a small handle on two sides. Paella is a rice dish with green beans, meat, lima beans orbutterbeans, seasonings and sometimes even snails. Simple Living. Creative Learning ! • Greek Mythology at the Service of the Portuguese Inquisition: the Case of Hercules and the Hydra of Lerna
Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies- Volume 1, Issue 1 – Pages 25-44 Greek Mythology at the Service of the Portuguese Inquisition: The Case of Hercules and the Hydra of Lerna By Milton Dias Pacheco Greek mythology has been along the centuries a fruitful source of inspiration to artists and writers, as it possesses the strength of expressing symbolically the most common circumstances of life. Regarding the threats that in every age put in danger human life the most popular figure was maybe the Hydra that infested the region of the Lake of Lerna, in Argolis. This mythical figure may still have an older origin as it is connected with chthonic dangers. Because of its terrifying aspect, reptilian traits and poisonous breath, it was related to the evil and the domains of Hell. Later the Hydra significance became larger and deeper as it represented the heresies that could affect the Christian orthodoxy. According to this point of view, every defender of the Catholic Faith was immediately compared to Hercules, the Greek hero who succeeded in killing the mythological Hydra monster. In this way, it is easy to understand why this representation was often used in connection with the Iberian Habsburg Kings, as it worked as a political strategy of this dynasty, in which the Spanish Habsburgs were faced as the guardians and defenders of the Church of Rome, mainly in times when the Inquisition developed a determinative role. An illustrative example of this was the decoration of the arch built by the Inquisition in Lisbon, when King Philip II of Portugal visited the Portuguese Empire capital.

  • Catalan Modernism and Vexillology
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). THE IMAGE OF WOMEN IN GRAPHIC AND NARRATIVE REPRESENTATIONS Mandy Lea McGregor A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Romance Languages (Spanish). Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Dr. José Polo de Bernabé Dr. Larry King Dr. Irene Gomez-Castellano © 2009 Mandy Lea McGregor ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT MANDY LEA MCGREGOR: The Image of Women in Graphic and Narrative Representations (Under the direction of Dr. José Polo de Bernabé) Spain in the early twentieth century was a country in constant transformation. The Segunda República Española and the Civil War brought social as well as political changes. As the Republicans and Nationalists fought for control, women, and Spanish society as a whole, fought to establish woman’s identity in modern Spain. Images of women in Civil War propaganda posters and in novels reveal the complexities inherent in both Republican and Nationalist attitudes toward women. While Republicans sought to liberate women, Republican propaganda posters and literature demonstrate a tendency to relegate women to tradition roles. The Nationalists, on the other hand , endeavored to maintain women as submissive housewives. Nonetheless, Nationalist propaganda posters and literature often contradict this ideal with images of strong women. These contradictions expose the unstable attitudes toward women on both sides of the Civil War and the difficulties of establishing identity, especially for women, in the modern era. iii To my amazing mother – you are my best editor. You inspire me and rescue my sanity on a daily basis.
