October 2019 Newsletter of the Cohutta Chapter of Trout Unlimited Lines From The Leader What’s Inside About 15 years ago I was making it a habit of Lines from the Leader P.1 stopping by the Jones Bridge section of the Hooch October Guest Speaker P.2 on my way home from work. It was a perfect spring 50/50 Film Tour P.2 and the bugs were hatching well each day... but I Stream of the Month P.3-4 never could crack the code. In other words, the trout Sponsor Spotlight P.4-5 did not want what I was offering. Then one afternoon Dream Trip Tickets P.5 I was pulling on my waders in the parking lot when a Trout in the classroom P.5 guide and his client approached me. In the guide’s Rod Raffle Winner P.6 fist were about a half dozen blue wing olives. He Unicoi OAD P.6 gave them to me and said that the fish were feeding Fly Tying Night at Patagonia P.7 on them and they just had great success. And so did Pursuit of GA Bass Slam P.8 I!! I do not recall his name but he was with Chris Happily Dazzled! P.9 Scalley’s A River Through Atlanta. I was forever sold Membership P.10-12 on Chris and his choice of guides. Read his story in Sponsors P.12-13 this newsletter and perhaps you too will want to patronize his company. Friday night Larry Vigil cooked up his famous jambalaya while Jeff Wilson prepared two delicious deserts in his Dutch ovens. The caramel chocolate and pineapple upside down cakes were to die for. Thankfully most people brought firewood for after dinner campfires tended by our chapter pyromaniac Wally Gardner. The cool temps and almost full moon made the evenings as fall-perfect as they could possibly be. Low water levels did not deter all from heading out to their favorite streams and creeks. Some went to the Tuck, Snowbird and Nantahala DH’s, some in search wild trout in the smaller creeks. Overall the catching was mixed but the fishing was excellent. Nelson Withers prepared Dutch oven lasagna for our main course Saturday night for some very tired but happy anglers. As always his creation was better than any Atlanta Italian restaurant. Jeff added pumpkin cake cobbler to another caramel cake desert. All three cooks helped prepare some unique breakfasts both mornings. Bravo guys! Some headed out to tackle different streams on their way home Sunday. While others pretended to do so but really had their spousal chores waiting at home. Thanks to all that attended and pitched in to make this one of the best Wally aka Gondorff battles chef Larry over his SOTM’s of the year. secret Potion Remaining Stream of the Month (SOTM) November 9: Toccoa DH.
