Examensarbeten i geologi vid Lunds universitet, Nr. 577, 20 sid. 15 hp. Dissertations in Geology at Lund University, No. 577, 20 pp. 15 hp (15 ECTS credits) . Abstract: In an area on the border between Helsingborg and Bjuv municipality a fault has been mapped by the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU) and since this area have poor prerequisites for groundwater outtake this is of big interest. This is also the reason why this survey have been carried out to try to identify if the fault is water-bearing and to find its position with a better accuracy then could be gathered during the SGU survey. To do this two geo- physical measurement methods was used. The first one being magnetometry to identify dolerite dikes known to cross the area so that these would not be mixed up with the fault in the second measurement method but also be- cause dolerite dikes are known to fracture surrounding bedrock and make it more water-bearing. The second meth- od to be used was VLF or “Very Low Frequency” which can detect conductive structures and their properties. This method detected the fault, fracture zones around some dolerite dikes but it also detected electric cabals from the power grid and a big water pipe. If the fault is water-bearing or not have not been able to be determined but some of the fracture zones have shown signs of saltwater will others shown signs of freshwater. Also the sheer amount of dolerite dikes could also be a sign that the older bedrock of the area is more water-bearing then would otherwise been expected. AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD SCIENCE C. Morfi (2020) 29: 29–42 The Wizards of Svalöf; Intellectual property rights and consolidation in the plant breeding industry Chrysa Morfi The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Economics, P.O. Box 7013, SE-75007 Uppsala, Sweden e-mail: [email protected] This paper reviews the most prominent changes that have taken place in the plant breeding industry in Sweden. We argue that the establishment of Intellectual Property Rights schemes creates power asymmetry in the seed val- ue chain and has therefore been a major driver of consolidation in Sweden and internationally. Furthermore, we provide an assessment of the use of cultivars bred domestically. This has been achieved by identifying and classi- fying the variety owners for major crops based on the origin of the breeding station and calculating the percent- age of the domestically-bred varieties used in crop production. The ratio of local varieties in relation to imported varieties is of special significance to Sweden, which has a long history of plant breeding and a challenging climate. Key words: biotechnology, UPOV, seed industry, seed system, trade agreements, value chain Introduction The hot and dry summer of 2018 was problematic for agriculture in Northern European countries, including Swe- den. The country received less rainfall than the expected annual level, leaving Swedish farmers with substantial losses. As a result of the crisis, Sweden turned to the European Commission and asked for emergency aid sup- port. A few months later, the government presented a package of SEK 1.2 billion to cover the fodder shortage and other loss of income that farmers are experiencing due to the drought (Government Offices of Sweden 2018).This unusually warm and dry summer is likely to be repeated.

  • Judicial Interpretation: the Achilles Heel of Social Law Laura Carlson LAURA CARLSON1
54 RETFÆRD ÅRGANG 32 2009 NR. 4/127 Judicial Interpretation: The Achilles Heel of Social Law Laura Carlson LAURA CARLSON1 This article addresses that which would appear to be a self-evident proposition; that courts give effect to the law. However, there are laws, and then there are laws. For example, in the majority of cases in the commercial arena, the parties can be seen (and are deemed) to be of equal bargaining power, with equal access to information and financial resources. The courts then simply function as objective adjudicators as provided by the State. Cases can be won or lost, but the law moves forward (more or less linearly) as commercial parties have the resources to have pertinent issues tried and retried. In this respect, private commercial parties can be seen as determining, or at least, pushing, the boundaries of the law to the extent they frame the issues brought to the courts. Keywords: Swedish discrimination legislation, sex discrimination, ethnic discrimination, age discrimination, Swedish Labour Court The situation with respect to cases falling within the field of »social law«2 is radical- ly different. The parties to such disputes are not of equal bargaining power and resources, with the plaintiff often an individual seeking a much needed benefit as denied by the other party, often a legal person in the form of the State, an employer 1 J.D.
