Watching the War David B. Smith INTRODUCTION Some time ago my wife and I drove up to Santa Maria, California, to see Jesus Christ Superstar. That admission in the first sentence of a book may well surprise you, even turn you off. Let me explain. I was 16, a newly returned missionary kid, when Superstar first hit the U.S. Back in those early seventies I listened to it – again and again – largely because it was catchy rock music. In a way, it was formative for me. Twenty years later, now an adult with a religious identity of my own, I watched the theatrical performance with renewed interest. The driving beat was still there, the same troubling lyrics. Some of it was clearly sacrilegious, putting cynical, despairing words into Jesus’ mouth never found in Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. Still, it was an hour and a half of haunting, stirring spiritual challenge. I sat there with tears streaming down my face. Not that that is ultimate proof of anything (I am easily moved), but the raw power of the music coupled with the wrenching questions of the lyrics made me tremble. “Jesus, what are You? And why did You have to come to die?” ………………. “Why?” What is this mysterious, wonderful story called Christianity all about? What can one Man’s death in A.D. 31 possibly mean for me here in the final days before the year 2000? “Why did Jesus die?” So many gifted Christian writers have wrestled eloquently with that great foundational question. THE AMERICAN CAIN: AN ALTERNATIVE NATIONAL ARCHETYPE by W BRETT WILEY (Under the Direction of James Nagel) ABSTRACT There is a national archetype based on Cain, the son of the Biblical Adam. The figure, the offspring of R. W. B. Lewis’s American Adam, appears when a character exhibits specific Cainian traits and reenacts his life experiences, most notably the murder of a double, either in pursuit of the American Dream or as a result of a failure to attain the opportunity suggested by the national ideology. There are a number of examples of the archetype, in particular, Frank Norris’s McTeague, Caroline Gordon’s Rion Outlaw, and John Steinbeck’s Caleb Trask. The evidence of a second national archetype is a significant addition to the study of American literature, providing a necessary addendum to Lewis’s seminal work, The American Adam . The American Cain, who serves as a representative of the consistent conflict in the country that can often turn violent, provides perspective on the overt hope and idealism of the figure Lewis identified in the early writings of American authors and reveals the inherent issues with the dream to which he corresponds. P E R F O R M E R S ((< BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD >)) O F BANDS g o t t h e i r s t a r t on the Sunset Strip, but none quite so literally as Buffalo Springfield. The band was thrown together on the Los Angeles boulevard in early 1966, when Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, two folk refugees from New York City, were stuck in traffic and spot ted a hearse with Canadian plates that obviously wasn’t heading to a funeral. A s n e i l y o u n g r e c a l l e d to Cameron Crowe in Rolling Stone: “Stephen Stills had met me before and remembered I had a hearse. As soon as he saw the Ontario plates, he knew it was me. So they stopped us. I was happy to see fucking anybody I knew. And it seemed Right: Richie Furay, very logical to us that we form a band. We picked up Dewey Martin for the Dewey Martin, Neijfi Young, Stephen drums, which was my idea, four or five days later.” W ith Young was fellow Stills, Bruce Palmer (from left) Canadian folkie Bruce Palmer, who would become the band’s bassist; like Stills and Furay, the two of them were just “tooling around . taking in California.
