The Silver Bridge was nearly 2,235 ft long, including a main span of 700 ft and two side spans of 380 ft each. Its suspension chains were composed of parallel eyebars made of heat-treated steel. Afterward, officials determined that a 1/8 inch cleavage fracture in eyebar number 330 was the cause of the collapse.

An editorial in the January 1968 issue of West Virginia Construction News stressed the need for additional funding for West Virginia's bridge infrastructure. The col- lapse of the Silver Bridge prompted a na- tional response, creating the first federal bridge inspection program in the Feder- al-Aid Highway bill. Signed into law by President Johnson on August 24, 1968, the legislation required the Department of Transportation to carry out safety in- spections for all federally-funded bridges every two-years.
