YILLIK: Annual of Istanbul Studies 1 (2019): 123-144 The 10th International Congress of Byzantine Studies, Istanbul, September 15–21, 1955 Buket Kitapçı Bayrı* Abstract The aim of this paper is to better understand the significance of International Congresses of Byzantine Studies within the Byzantine studies in general and the 10th International Congress of Byzantine Studies 1955-Istanbul, which has been overshadowed in memories by the most regretful events of 6–7 September, in particular. The paper briefly deals with the Byzantine studies and politics of culture in Turkey between 1926 and 1950s, which may have helped Istanbul’s election as the host of 10th International Congress. It focuses on the preparations for the 10th International Congress by the Turkish organizing committee and Turkish government, based on the minutes of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and the archival documents of Cahide Tamer, and finally it discusses the 10th International Congress, members of the Turkish organizing committee, participants, papers, excursions, exhibitions, and publications. Keywords: Byzantine studies, International Congresses of Byzantine Studies, 10th International Congress of Byzantine Studies 1955-Istanbul, Byzantine monuments in Istanbul, politics of culture 10. Four Altar Panels by Bernhard Strigel Some Historical and Philological Perspectives1 Hans A. Pohlsander University at Albany State University of New York n 1507 the German painter Bernhard Strigel (Memmingen 1460-1527) created an altar of the Holy Cross of which four side 1panels have survived, while the presumably carved center has been lost. These four panels were formerly housed in Kynzvart (Konigswart) Castle near Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) in northwest Bohemia but were transferred to the National Gallery in Prague in 1972. The altar apparently was commissioned by the emperor Maxi milian I and presented by him as a gift to Pope Julius II. Maximilian at this time was hoping to travel to Rome and to be crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the pope, as his father Frederick III had been in 1452.

The two sections published here bring forward and discuss little-known and yet important evidence covering the first two post-Byzantine centuries and are intended to elaborate, supplement or contextualise the materials presented in the first part (which appeared in the previous volume of this journal). Not accidentally, this article ends with an unavoidable reference to the very text that ignited our exploration into the historical landscape of the pre-modern Balkans, a short but striking passage from Matthew of Myra’s early seventeenth-century chronicle known as History of Wallachia. Indeed, Matthew’s testimony stands out as one of the first conscious attempts to account for the uneasy, but also prolific, dynamic and multi-layered, relationship between the two peoples.

  • The Origins of Christmas and the Date of Christ's Birth
JETS 58/2 (2015) 299–324 THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTMAS AND THE DATE OF CHRIST’S BIRTH KURT M. SIMMONS* The origins of Christmas and the date of Christ’s birth are separate but relat- ed questions. However, Christmas is usually assumed to have no connection with the actual date of Christ’s birth. Discussions regarding the origins of Christmas typically oMit reference to the birth of Christ, unless it is to affirm it is unlikely he was born December 25th. This is unfortunate because it has skewed discussion and taken it in directions which tend to impugn the legitimacy of Christmas itself. However, chronological evidence strongly favors December 25th being the actual date of the nativity, such that the assumption that Christmas is unconnected with the date of Christ’s birth is no longer acadeMicallY defensible or sound. I. GENESIS OF THE DISCUSSION Discussion regarding the origins of Christmas stems largely from the Refor- mation. Although manY Reformers took no exception to Christmas, various Calvin- ist sects, including Puritans and Scottish Presbyterians, saw it as a piece of fiction, and went so far as to prohibit its observance in England, Scotland, and the AMeri- can Colonies. The sentiments of John Knox were typical of the time: By contrary Doctrine, we understand whatsoever men, by Laws, Councils, or Constitutions have imposed upon the consciences of Men, without the ex- pressed coMMandment of God's word: such as be vows of chastitY, foreswear- ing of Marriage, binding of Men and woMen to several and disguised apparels, to the superstitious observation of fasting daYs, difference of Meat for conscience sake, praYer for the dead; and keeping of holY daYs of certain Saints coMManded bY Men, such as be all those that the Papists have invented, as the Feasts (as theY term theM) of Apostles, Martyrs, Virgins, of Christmas, CircuMcision, Epiphany, Purification, and other fond feasts of our LadY.
