BUSY FINGERS by Dianne Degner Our new quilting group started last month and is going strong. We even have a name. We are the Fabric and Friends Quilting Group. This article is for everyone that loves quilts and the people who make them. Fabric and Friends Quilting – The group meets on Fridays at 9:00 A.M. in the craft room. You may stay until 3:00 P.M. if you desire. We have all levels of quilting experience – beginner to advanced. Remember that you can start small. If making a quilt seems like too big of a project then try a table runner, pot holders, placemats, a wall hanger or a smaller lap quilt. Please call Deb Weiderman if you have questions. Quilt Show – If you like to look at the work of other quilters, then put February 14 and 15 on your calendar. The Ladies of the Lake Quilters Guild will be having their biennial show at the First Presbyterian Church on Lake Hollingsworth. There will be plenty of vendors as well as a boutique with handcrafted items and quilting products. Go to their website – www.ladiesofthelakes.org for more information. We also look forward to the Sewing and Quilt Expo returning to the Lakeland Center March 20 – 22. It is also a great event to attend with classes, demonstrations, a style show and many vendors. The website is www.sewingexpo.com. Gift Shop – We hope you find time to browse the gift shop. You could find a sweet little Valentine’s Day gift for someone special. Hours are 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Monday through Thursday. February Craft Classes – Thursday, February 6 is the open crafting session. Join us to work on your own project if you have one. Thursday, February 13 is making a paper heart wreath. Thursday, February 20 is a clay pot project for St. Patrick’s Day. Thursday, February 27 is locker rug hooking. All classes begin at 1:00 P.M. Sign up sheets with more information are posted in the craft room and examples of each project will be in a glass front cabinet. Call Terry Heald if you have a suggestion for a class you would like to try. Judging a Quilt – Last summer, I had the opportunity to watch quilts being judged at a county fair. There were many beautiful quilts so it must have been a difficult job awarding the ribbons. Here is the first of a two-part series on what a judge will look for when evaluating a quilt, whether the quilt is traditional or “arty”, pieced or appliqued, machine or hand quilted General appearance – It must be clean without pet hair or loose threads clinging to it. There should be no odor such as cigarette smoke. Workmanship or construction – Stitches should be consistent and even with no puckering on the front or back. All points should be sharp and curves smooth. All seams should be flat and secure. Piecing should be accurate and straight lines completely straight. Technical quality – How difficult is the quilt design? Is it a complex design with many pieces or a simple 9 patch block? To be continued next month.

THE JACK “BEECHER” LEMMON GOLF TOURNAMENT by Bob Hitchcock Thursday, November 7, the Fifth Annual Jack “Beecher” Lemmon Golf Tournament was held at the Schalamar Creek Golf Club. 136 golfers participated in remembrance of our friend, Jack. The weather was great and everyone involved had a wonderful day of golf. This year a change in the way our teams were paired took place. A list of the participants and their handicaps were given to Jaime in the Pro Shop, using a computer program which randomly put the teams together. It must have worked, as four teams tied for first place. As you may or may not know, the majority of Funds raised goes Hello All. My name is Brandy to the Special Olympics Golf Program. This year a $2,500.00 check was given to the Special Olympics Golf Program, at the same time some of our golfers gave back the monetary prizes they had won, making the total raised to over $2,700.00. The Committee also gave $200.00 to the Angel Tree at Christmas. Again, the Committee can not thank everyone enough for your participation. The 2013 honoree was Bob Weber. We hope to see you teeing up at the “Beecher” Memorial next year.

SCHALAMAR CREEK MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION By Phil Jacob In February, we are over the “Hump,” but we still have plenty of great golfing days ahead in March and April. The Men’s Association now has 118 members, thanks to Gene Novak who recruited most of the new members with the help of the SCMGA Board. Since Gene is now the League Treasurer, he has been replaced as membership chairman by Jim Shover. Sign up sheets are now on the Men’s League Board for the 3rd Annual Member-Guest tournament to be held on Friday, March 28. On January 6 and 13, we completed the annual 2-Man Best Ball tournament. The winners were:

Blue Flight 1 J. Shover/R. King — 120 Blue Flight 2 H. Basso/R Petterson — 114 Blue/White Flight B. Gilmore/G. Obermeyer — 120 White Flight G. Yacura/J. Beedham — 115 Nine Hole Flight R. Crawford/D. Nelson — 67 Congratulations to the winners.

CHIP SHOTS — Did you know that the 15th Hole years ago was called the “Gators Jaw.” A few of us have had our own choice name for it. Some have looked up to the sky raised a club and cried for an explanation, begging for help. So far, no member has had a hole-in-one and it is open for someone to have that “big money” shot. Some sad news. Schalamar Creek played against the Reunion Golf Club and lost by two points. Our Pro Shop Cory won his match 5 and 3. Figure this out — Cory shot 70 and his opponent shot a 68. Obviously, Cory used skill, course management and even smoke and mirrors. A few of our fellow members are a little under the weather, it would be very nice if you would give them a visit or phone call to let them know we care about them, this would cheer them up. We are still in mourning with the Ohio State, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers fans. Our starter Wayne (Packer) Radtke is considering painting his cart black. Just remember — wait ‘till next year — that’s what the Lion’s and Brown’s fans have been saying for the last umpteen years. On the bright side Bob Kane has a “Big 10” and a “Rose Bowl” smile with the Spartan’s success. It was a green and white year. This is your golf course. Pick up litter, put sand in the divots in the fairways and the teeing ground and please repair your ball marks plus one other on the green. Until next time, smile , have fun, keep swinging and bring some sunshine into someone’s life.

11 SCHALAMAR CREEK LADIES’ GOLF ASSOCIATION by Alice Piechoski February marks the half way point of our Ladies’ League golf season. Several tournaments are on tap as we head closer to our Closing event in April. The SCLGA Solheim Cup was introduced last winter. This friendly yet competitive event will return this year on February 11. Gail Brewer is the event chairwoman with Carol Kane, Dianne Lang, Karen Lloyd, Carol Sutton and Linda Wolfgang serving on her committee. Sign-up sheets are posted. Add your name ASAP if you want to participate. The $5 entry fee will go towards the game, refreshments and prizes for the winning team. Here’s a quick overview of the format. Participating league members will be divided into two teams. Each golfer will be paired with a partner to play matches against another twosome from the opposite side. The match play sequence will be a scramble, an alternate shot and a best ball segment in a 6-6-6 format. The 9 Hole league ladies will play their matches in a 4- 4-4 format. Will the Yellow team be able to unseat the Green team this year or will the Green team continue to dominate? Check out your golf wardrobe for team colors. Wear yellow or green to represent your team. You will meet your partner and teammates at a Pairings Meeting on Monday afternoon, February 10, at 4:00 P.M. in the ballroom. Additional information about the match play format will be given. Then on the afternoon of February 11, upon completion of the matches, a wine and cheese social will take place in the ballroom. The winning team will be announced and prizes awarded at this time. Please note the Club Championship rounds are scheduled for February 8 and 9. Good luck to all of our SCLGA members participating. It’s not too early to set your sights on our SCLGA President’s Cup Tournament, scheduled for March 11 and March 18. This is our League championship and most prestigious tournament. You need to have four rounds of league day play recorded in the ringer book to qualify for this competition. Participation in the SCLGA Solheim Cup will be included in that count. The League booklet can be consulted for more information about the President Cup format or contact one of the Pairings/Events chairwomen if you have any questions. Has anyone noticed the insignia bling adorning the golf bag of one of our members? Someone is also sporting a jazzy Solheim Cup jacket on cooler mornings. Last August, Sandy Christman and Karen Lloyd traveled to Parker, for the 13th Solheim Cup tournament between American and European professional women golfers held at . They enjoyed the experience and shared some of their impressions. One thing that hit home was the length of the course and the stamina it took to walk it. Sandy felt that the undulating greens were read more accurately by the European players and helped them win the Cup. Karen enjoyed seeing captain the team. Karen knows this Ohio State Sports Hall of Famer personally. Karen was impressed watching 18-year-old and 20-year-old represent the U.S. as rookie participants. She also enjoyed seeing mentor Lizette Salles, another rookie player. Hopefully, Sandy and Karen’s experience has sparked your interest in this great women’s golf event. Frankfurt will be the site of the . In 2017, the Cup returns to the United States and will be played at the Des Moines Country Club in Iowa.

13 LIBRARY by Linda Adams I recently brought some northern friends to our library. They had visited several years ago, and they were very impressed by the new snazzy look. I was pleased to show them around. I am reading "A Street Cat Named Bob And How He Saved My Life," by James Bowen, who tells the moving, uplifting true story of an unlikely friendship between a man on the streets and the ginger cat who adopts him and helps him heal his life. When James Bowen found an injured, ginger street cat curled up in the hallway of his sheltered accommodation, he had no idea just how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet James couldn't resist helping the strikingly intelligent tom cat, whom he quickly christened Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, imagining he would never see him again. But Bob had other ideas. Soon the two were inseparable and their diverse, comic and occasionally dangerous adventures would transform both their lives, slowly healing the scars of each other's troubled pasts. Next on my list is "The Murder Room." by Michael Capuzzo. Twenty years ago, three men obsessed with solving murders decided to form a group that would dissect cold cases baffling law enforcement bureaucracies. They named the informal organization the Vidocq Society, in honor of a groundbreaking French detective long dead. Although privately invited members lived around the United States and indeed around the globe, the gathering place for the monthly meetings was Philadelphia. Although the Vidocq Society members did not seek publicity, inevitably journalists and law enforcement officers and the loved ones of murder victims became fascinated. One of those journalists is Michael Capuzzo, who has reported for the Philadelphia Inquirer and who lives in Pennsylvania. Check it out. Thanks to all who donate books in good condition.

Traditionally celebrated on February 22—Washington’s actual day of birth—the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.

We had over 32 vehicles start the parade. Unfortunately, not all were able to finish. We had golf carts, bikes, trikes, and an antique pickup. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work in getting their vehicles decorated. Thanks also to all the people who joined us for hot chocolate and cookies, and to those who came out of their houses to cheer us on along the parade route. Mark will announce the winners of the parade in the Schalamar E- Blast.

After that we just ride around on every street. We stop and talk to people and keep a watchful eye open for anything that looks out of place. Then we finish our shift by riding on the “main” streets so if someone drives past looking for homes to break into at night, they see the patrol and think it is a good idea to leave before someone writes their license plate number down.
