he 2019 NAVHDA Invitational was a success. Thanks to the volunteers who helped Tracey TNelson and her crew—they did a great job. I want to thank my fellow judges for giving their time in the field and at the water. The set-up for the event starts on Tuesday before the test and continues for several days. Thanks to the Buckeye Chapter and Herb Chris- tian for pulling off a great event again—nothing works better than a well-oiled machine. Congratulations to those of you who passed and received your Versatile Champion title! This month is the beginning of a great hunting season after all that hard work you have put in this past summer. My prejudice was locked in. I lived by the adage that anything worth doing is worth over- doing and I followed my passion for birds to Montana. My dogs and I hunted many hundreds of miles every year. I worked in the outdoor industry and had occasion to befriend many writers and celebrities. They’d often comment on the quality of my dogs and our hunting style. Some would ask about trials or competitions, and I’d harrumph at the thought. They issued kind compliments that would occasionally make me wonder about what would happen if I challenged the “field trailers” to an old-fashioned bird dual. But those thoughts were fleeting.
