Editors News Well at Christmas we found ourselves in tier 3. For many there is not a lot of difference sit at home and wait. For some it meant family could not be close at Christmas. For us it meant a day of Zooming friends and family. Some how it made them feel a little closer, but we still can’t wait for the day we can have a hug. The King William Carnival Club put a smile on a few children (and adults) faces by bringing father Christmas around the villages. I know they did not get everywhere but time and weather was against them. A thanks from me, I just love going and seeing him. Very sad I know. None of us know what 2021 will bring us. A vaccine that allows us to meet up again I hope. Those that are alone, I want to let you know we are still here. If you need help or a chat. My number is still in this magazine on page 26. You should all still have the numbers of the COVID-19 support person assigned to your area. We have not gone away. Unlike last year I am sure none of us have anything in our diaries. At least we will not be disappointed when they are cancelled! We may also be looking at another Mothers day lockdown on the 14th March. So to all Mums who will be missing their children this mothers day, I send a hug and know that this is happening to keep you safe. I want to thank Laura Sorensen for getting in touch with me. She has lived in Meare for over 10 years and has been involved with tree planting, as a volunteer, for the past 3 years and participated in planting for the Food For- est Project, for Wildlife Trust and on private land in Godney and Butleigh. The government has pledged to help with this planting of trees but they then cancelled an order of oak saplings and the suppliers say they will have to burn them if they are not taken by others. The environmental group Extinction Rebellion have been crowdfunding. They are trying to rescue the trees and get them planted all over the country. I am going to see where they might be able to plant some on my land and thought others may like information about this, so take a look at the “would like to mention page” for de- tails. 4

Would like to Mention A Letter of Thanks Through the Village News, I would like to thank all friends for their lovely cards, telephone messages, flowers and chocolates, I received after my fall and having to spend a few days in hospital. I am recovering slowly but age doesn't help. No I hadn't been on the bottle, early morning so it was only coffee. Special thanks to neighbours Steph and Alan for all their help at the time. Muriel Baker. Rubbish Becoming a Real Problem I have noticed several people mentioning the amount of rubbish on our streets has increased since the first lockdown. I have received this letter from one of our neighbours. “As I live in Heathway Lane, I walk along it regularly and never fail to ap- preciate it’s beauty. Since Covid, more and more people are using the lane for exercise and to walk their dogs. Unfortunately, this has led to an in- crease in the amount of litter being left in the lane and more worryingly, being thrown in the ditches either side. My walk today yielded 22 lager cans of varying ages, mostly Fosters, sever- al empty packets of Pall Mall cigarettes and 5 used dark blue dog poo bags, despite there being a dog poo bin at the bottom of the lane. Could I please ask those responsible to refrain from spoiling this lane for the majority of the people who just want somewhere quiet and lovely to en- joy and for the wildlife that live there. Please use the dog poo bin provided and take your rubbish home with you. It’s not that much to ask. Sarah Veale”. Tree Planting support by Laura Sorensen I wondered if anyone in the villages might be interested in having oak tree saplings planted on their land? As people probably know we need to plant millions of trees and hedges if we are to stave off Global Heating as trees act as fantastic carbon sinks and provide habitat and food for our dwindling insect and small mammals population. I have noticed many fields in the Meare and Westhay area over the past 10 years which never seem to change. The owners might like a few trees planted around the edge. I am happy to coordinate tree planting events if anyone knows of appropri- ate land available. Please contact me by email if you are interested in get- ting involved in any way. Tree planting season is now! Laura at [email protected] or contact the Editor Caroline Sanderson

St. Mary’s Church News It is difficult to make plans as we start another lockdown but we are still hoping to have at least one service at St Mary’s Church each month at 11.00.am on the second Sunday, 14th Feb and 14th March. Updated infor- mation will be on the noticeboard by the church gate and on the Meare and Westhay website. Funerals can still take place. Looking back to the end of 2020 at Christmas time it was with a great sense of joy and thankfulness that we were able to hold any services at all after the February 2020 damage to the roof with the rain pouring in. It was a wonderful contrast in December when the church was warm, dry and full of colour and light from the many candles and Christmas decorations. We were able to sing a few carols accompanied by a guitar, outside the church after one morning service and families enjoyed singing “Carols in the Field” on Christmas Eve reviving an old tradition when the church choir would sing around the village. We look forward to having the church bells ringing again once restrictions on distancing ease and an inspection of the tower and bells has been carried out. New bellringers would be welcomed to help us all celebrate those im- portant national, family and church occasions!

Best wishes to everyone for 2021 .

Police Update A section of the M5 in Somerset was closed for several hours overnight following a fatal incident. At just before 7pm on Monday (January 4), we received calls reporting a man had fallen from an overbridge on the M5 between junctions 25 and 26. The man was struck by a number of vehicles and sadly died at the scene. Witness to this incident who have not yet spoken with the police, please call 101 and give the call handler the refer- ence number 5221002241. * * * * Officers investigating an assault in West Somerset on Monday 4 January are asking witnesses to come forward and call 101 and give reference 5221002174. A man, in his 50s, was driving along the A39 towards Washford when the red car in front of him stopped near the Dragon House pub in Bilbrook at about 6.30pm. The driver of that vehicle got out, approached the man – who was forced to stop his own vehicle – and began remonstrating with him, before punching him, leaving the victim with facial injuries. He is described as white, male, in his early 40s, about 5ft 8ins, of medium build, with short dark hair and was wearing a dark padded winter jacket. His vehicle is said to be red, small and having a registration number be- ginning H368, or similar. Police believe a number of other motorists may have been in the area travelling along the A39 at the time and may have seen what happened, or have dashcam footage. * * * * It said on the BBC web pages those responsible for steeling the led from the Church roofs have been sentenced. They targeted the churches, from Dorset to Yorkshire, between 2018 and 2020. The combined repair bill is estimated at over £2m. All four men admitted multiple counts of theft at an earlier hearing. Motescu, 32, of Sutton Hill, Telford, and Sucea, 38, of George Street, Birmingham, were both jailed for six years and six months. Buica, 25, of George Street, Birmingham, was jailed for six years, and 24-year-old Birtu, of Port Street, Evesham, was jailed for 43 months. * * * * It has been brought to police attention recently, reports of persons beg- ging in Street High Street at various times of the day. Police are working with Street Parish Council and other agencies, to address this issue. * * * * The Police have been told of speeding vehicles in Brooks Road, Smithfield Road and other locations around Street. Police will put passing patrols and speed checks at these locations when they can and they are also try- ing to start up a new Community Speed watch Scheme in Street itself.

Meare Community Church A thought for today by Mike Strange. As we look ahead to a new year, what word best describes how you feel? Is it hope? Effective Coronavirus vaccines have now been approved and are, even now, being given to vulnerable people throughout Somerset. The Government, the new American President and the leadership of China have all recently set new and challenging goals to reduce global warming and tackle climate change. As our hospitals are overwhelmed with an even worse wave of Coronavirus and many face the threat of unemployment, and you are weary of all the restrictions, you may not feel very hopeful right now. Even so, we have reason to hope. Better days are coming. Even in the worst of times, the Bible says, Christians also have good rea- sons to look to the future with hope. It says: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 13:15. Wishing you all a very happy and hopeful New Year. Best wishes, Mike Strange, Pastor Meare Community Church MEARE PARISH ACTIVITY GROUP (MPAG) Meare Parish Activity Group (MPAG), was formed following the successful Jubilee parish celebrations of 2012, to continue to provide community enter- tainment. We have since held lots of events, including quizzes, bingo, curry nights, fish & chip suppers, and of course, the fantastic Burns Night suppers, cul- minating in a weekend event in September. Obviously, all events have been off for most of 2020, but we plan to be back in 2021, and have also been looking further forward. June 2nd to 5th 2022, has been designated a bank holiday, to celebrate the Queen’s 70th Jubilee, and will be the perfect time to have some community events on the playing field. MPAG were thinking of doing cream teas, bar etc, but input from other groups or individuals would ensure variety, and sharing of the work load. The usual favourites of dog show, raffle, children's games, tug of war etc, are all up for grabs, but any ideas, or offers of help would be welcomed. MPAG committee members contact details can be found on their Facebook page, and on the parish website meareandwesthay.com Happy New Year! Janice Bradley Secretary MPAG

MEARE & WESTHAY FUNDRAISING TEAM

Happy New Year everyone We hope you all had good Christmases and we wish each and everyone of you a very happy and healthy New Year. In December, we increased our 100 Club membership by 30% which was fantastic. Our special December draw was a great success with our lucky winner, Nick Padgett, winning £450. Congratulations once again Nick! So here we are in February. We only have a handful of numbers left now so if you have any family and friends (who don't have to live in our communi- ty) who might like to join, please let us know and we will send them the relevant information. It would be a wonderful start to the year if we man- aged to sell our remaining numbers which would take our monthly cash prize £250. We will commence with the project you, our members, voted on, i.e. placing and planting a large trough by the Meare village sign, once COVID-19 guidelines permit. During 2021 we will continue to look at other projects that our 100 Club can fund. And finally - thank you to those of you who have already made their pay- ments for February. Could I just send a gentle reminder to those who have- n't yet paid to let us have your payments no later than a week before our next draw which takes place on Sunday 21st February as this gives us time to get all the admin completed. If you are unsure if you are up to date, just email us at the address below. [email protected] Thank you all once again for your support and please stay safe. Meare and Westhay New Village Hall and Playing Field Committee Full plans were submitted to Somerset Building Control Partnership for approval, just prior to the Christmas break, they will also monitor every stage of the build through to completion.

The committee are still busy progressing the project and by the time you are reading this we aim to have completed the tender documentation for the build. The Parish Council, supported by the Somerset association of local councils, are preparing the application for the public works loan of £200,000 to be submitted to The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Govern- ment, and we will update everyone once this is complete. Work is continuing behind the scenes by the volunteers preparing the docu- mentation to ensure everything is in place for the fund seeking, when we have a price for the build from the principal contractor, we will then be able to start applying for grants. The design of the hall is near completion but, because of COVID, we have revisited the design of the heating and ventilation system. This new system incorporates an environmentally and COVID friendly heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system and solar panels for power. This will use an air source heat pump and a ventilation system that will refresh the air in the building 6 times an hour. This is a bespoke innovative system that we hope will enable the Hall to receive COVID friendly certification, make it safer and allow it to be used more frequently than currently allowed. If any parishioner has any questions please do not hesitate to contact us via email - [email protected] or you can write to the secretary at 88 St Mary's Road, Meare, BA6 9SS

Clerks Report Parish Council Meetings If you wish to listen to the meetings please email the Clerk – [email protected] for the meeting ID and passcode. Members of the public are very welcome to attend. Monday 15th February 2021 via zoom Monday 15th March 2021 via zoom Keeping our communities safe Avon & Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens on COVID-19. However disappointing it is to find ourselves instructed to stay at home once again, I welcome the Government’s decision; we desper- ately need to slow the transmission of the virus to ensure the most vulnerable can be protected and the NHS can cope. I am under no illusions, this is tough and this is not the New Year we had hoped for; but with cases rising to new heights, we must pull together to stop the spread of covid-19. I would urge you all to stay at home to protect yourself and your loved ones from this fatal virus. For many of you, home is not always a safe place and as a community we all have a part to play in ensuring our friends, families and neigh- bours remain supported during these difficult times. If you, or someone you know is suffering from domestic abuse, lock- down and isolation rules do not apply. If you need to leave your home because you are worried about your safety, you can. Young people have been severely impacted by the regulations once again and they are no longer able to return to school, college or uni- versity. Alongside the difficulties of home learning, young people are more at risk of criminal and sexual exploitation online and may be vulnerable to domestic abuse in the home. If you are concerned for your safety, or the safety of someone you know, the police and sup- port services are here to help.

Cont. Please remember that you are not alone and support is out there, if you are in an emergency please call 999, if you can’t speak dial 55 when prompted by the operator, they will help. Since the beginning of the pandemic I have been dedicated to provid- ing emergency funding to charities, community groups and organisa- tions who have gone above and beyond to support local people. I am incredibly proud to have supported local organisations with over £170,000 in partnership with the Police Community Trust. While I am honoured to have supported the communities’ response to the pandemic, the support our NHS have provided is second to none. I have unwavering respect and appreciation for our incredible NHS, who despite all the challenges they have faced, continue to roll out the UK’s biggest vaccination programme while continuing to play a huge role in supporting those sick from the virus alongside the addi- tional strain of the winter months. For those of you who may be frustrated with another lockdown and are tempted to flout the rules, I would strongly urge you not to do so. We all know how lockdown works, irresponsible and reckless be- haviour will not be tolerated. Avon and Somerset Police, and their dedicated covid-19 team, have my full support in responding to breaches of the emergency regulations by engaging, explaining, en- couraging and enforcing the law. You may feel a loss of hope and struggle to see a light at the end of the tunnel but I would urge you to have hope. With every vaccine we are changing the odds against the virus, in favour of our communi- ties. We are in a race against covid-19 and we must not let it spread further before we can vac- cinate our most vulnerable people. Above all, please remember you do not ever need to suffer in si- lence, the police and support ser- vices are here to help. Until next time, stay safe. Sue

Census 2021 The 2021 census will be held on Sunday 21st March 2021, it occurs every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales. You must complete the census by law. If you do not, or if you supply false information, you could be fined up to £1,000. Census 2021 will be the first digital census. The Office for National Statistics will be in contact shortly with an access code and details of what to do. If you can’t get online or need help completing the census online, there’ll be Census Support Centres across England and Wales. Census 2021 will be hiring at least 30,000 field staff across Eng- land and Wales, so if you’re a people person, have great customer service skills and want to be part of something that affects all of us, then apply for a job with the census.

Further details of what to do, when and how, will be coming through your door shortly with full de- tails of what infor- mation is needed, so do not worry.

Meare and Westhay Ladies Social Club As with everyone else, MWLSC's meetings have been halted since March 2020. A shame, as we had some interesting speakers and outings arranged. Even our Christmas meal, which is always very well attended, and great fun, was cancelled at the very last minute. Under normal circumstances, the group meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month, and for some time, meeting's had been held in the comfortable lounge at Meare Manor, where we were spoilt by Sue's lovely home made biscuits with our coffee. Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to use this facility, and we would like to extend our thanks to Sue and Graham for their support and hospitality. Once we are allowed to get together again, we will look for a suitable venue.
