E-mail: [email protected] 2Agriculture and Agri-food Canada, 440 University Avenue, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada C1A 4N6 Abstract The Palearctic byrrhids Chaetophora spinosa (Rossi) and Simplocaria semistriata (F.) are reported for the first time from Prince Edward Island (PEI), the former species for the first time from Atlantic Canada from specimens collected in 2003–05. Their presence is discussed both in light of the history of introductions of exotic species in Atlantic Canada in general, and on PEI in particular, and also in the context of the effect of adventive species on native organisms and ecosystems. These discoveries underscore the need for continual monitoring of invertebrate populations to detect on- going introductions of adventive species. The native byrrhid Cytilus alternatus (Say) is also reported for the first time from PEI. Key words: Coleoptera, Byrrhidae, Chaetophora, Simplocaria, Cytilus, Canada, Prince Edward Island, biodiversity, adventive species Introduction Atlantic Canada has long been recognized as a point of introduction for many exotic species of Coleoptera. Brown (1940, 1950, 1967) reported 76 Palearctic beetle species from Atlantic Canada. Lindroth (1954, 1955, 1957, 1963) discussed this topic at length and reported many species of Palearctic Carabidae. Johnson (1990), Bousquet (1992), Hoebeke and Wheeler (1996a, 1996b, 2000, 2003), Wheeler & Hoebeke (1994), and Majka & Klimaszewski (2004) all added additional species. -

Report of a Pest Risk Analysis for Platypus Parallelus (Fabricus, 1801) for Turkey

Ergun€ Izmir_ Agricultural Quarantine Directorate, PO 35230, Konak, Izmir,_ Turkey; e-mail: [email protected] Invasive bark and ambrosia beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) are increasingly responsible for damage to forests, plantations and orchards worldwide. They are usually closely associated with fungi, which may be pathogenic causing tree mortal- ity. Stressed or weakened trees are particularly subject to attack, as is recently felled, non-treated wood. This PRA report concerns the ambrosia beetle Platypus parallelus (Euplatypus parallelus, Fabricus, 1801) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), which was detected in official controls. The PRA area is Turkey. P. parallelus is not on the A1 or A2 list for Turkey but the Regulation on Plant Quarantine (3 December 2011-OJ no: 28131) Article 13 (5) indicates that pests which are assessed to pose a risk for Turkey following PRA that are not present in the above lists and plants, wood, plant products and other mate- rials contaminated by these organisms are banned from entry into Turkey. This risk assessment follows the EPPO Standard PM 5/3(5) Decision-support scheme for quarantine pests and uses the terminology defined in ISPM 5 Glossary of Phytosanitary Terms. This paper addresses the possible risk factors caused by Platypus parallelus (Euplatypus parallelus, Fabricus, 1801) in Turkey. Terms (available at https://www.ippc.int/index.php). DÉPARTEMENT DES SCIENCES DU BOIS ET DE LA FORET FACULTÉ DE FORESTERIE, DE GÉOGRAPHIE ET DE GÉOMATIQUE UNIVERSITÉ LAVAL QUÉBEC 2010 Jean-Philippe Légaré, 2010 Résumé Cette étude vise à déterminer l'impact de quatre traitements sylvicoles (CPRS, CPPTM et 2 types de coupes de jardinage) sur la diversité et l'abondance des coléoptères en forêt boréale irrégulière. Un dispositif d'échantillonnage a été déployé dans 4 blocs expérimentaux du 5 juin au 22 août 2007 et a permis de capturer 26 906 coléoptères regroupant 407 taxons de coléoptères répartis au sein de 52 familles distinctes. Les résultats montrent que la CPRS et la CPPTM modifient davantage la structure et la composition des communautés de coléoptères retrouvées dans l'aire d'étude que les coupes de jardinage. L'ouverture du milieu de même que les débris ligneux au sol et sur pied semblent des facteurs déterminants dans l'établissement de plusieurs espèces saproxyliques et non- saproxyliques. Les coupes de jardinage permettent le maintien des communautés étudiées; ces traitements sylvicoles s'inscrivent bien dans une perspective d'aménagement écosystémique et durable de la forêt boréale irrégulière. 11 Abstract The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of four silvicultural treatments (CPRS, CPPTM and 2 types of selection cutting) on the diversity and abundance of beetles in irregular boreal forest. -
About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -

Hidden Diversity in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest
www.nature.com/scientificreports Corrected: Author Correction OPEN Hidden diversity in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest: the discovery of Jurasaidae, a new beetle family (Coleoptera, Elateroidea) with neotenic females Simone Policena Rosa1, Cleide Costa2, Katja Kramp3 & Robin Kundrata4* Beetles are the most species-rich animal radiation and are among the historically most intensively studied insect groups. Consequently, the vast majority of their higher-level taxa had already been described about a century ago. In the 21st century, thus far, only three beetle families have been described de novo based on newly collected material. Here, we report the discovery of a completely new lineage of soft-bodied neotenic beetles from the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, which is one of the most diverse and also most endangered biomes on the planet. We identifed three species in two genera, which difer in morphology of all life stages and exhibit diferent degrees of neoteny in females. We provide a formal description of this lineage for which we propose the new family Jurasaidae. Molecular phylogeny recovered Jurasaidae within the basal grade in Elateroidea, sister to the well-sclerotized rare click beetles, Cerophytidae. This placement is supported by several larval characters including the modifed mouthparts. The discovery of a new beetle family, which is due to the limited dispersal capability and cryptic lifestyle of its wingless females bound to long-term stable habitats, highlights the importance of the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest as a top priority area for nature conservation. Coleoptera (beetles) is by far the largest insect order by number of described species. Approximately 400,000 species have been described, and many new ones are still frequently being discovered even in regions with histor- ically high collecting activity1. -

Olivier, 1790), Heterobostrychus aequalis (Waterhouse, 1884), Sinoxylon unidentatum (Fabricius, 1801), Xyloperthella picea (A.G. Olivier, 1790) and Apate monachus Fabricius, 1775 are recorded for the first time. Two of the mentioned species (H. aequalis and S. unidentatum) are alien and recorded only on the basis of single captures and the possible establishment of these species is discussed. Earlier records of Scobicia pustulata (Fabricius, 1801) from Malta are incorrect and should be attributed to S. chevrieri (A. Villa & J.B. Villa, 1835). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Based on a well-preserved specimen from Upper Eocene Baltic amber (Kaliningrad region, Russia), Microbregma wald- wico sp. nov., the second fossil species of this genus, is described. The new species is similar to the extant Holarctic M. emarginatum (Duftschmid), 1825, and fossil M. sucinoemarginatum (Kuśka), 1992, but differs in its shorter abdominal ventrite 1 (about 0.43 length of ventrite 2) and larger body (5.1 mm). A key to species of the genus Microbregma is given, and a check-list of described fossil Ptinidae is provided. The fossil record of Ptinidae now includes 48 species in 27 genera and 8 subfamilies. Key words: Anobiinae, Microbregma waldwico, new species, Tertiary, Baltic amber, key, fossil Introduction Ptinidae Latreille, 1802 is a medium-sized beetle family with 259 genera and more than 2900 species known worldwide (Zahradník & Háva 2014a). Representatives of this family are common in Baltic amber and well represented in museum collections (Alekseev 2014).
