Everybody is born with art in him and to be a good artist one must express the art he possesses. The Loyolite serves the purpose of a canvas to all those who proudly wear the maroon crest on their chests and are led by the spirit of Magis as their guide. In today’s world where creativity and imagination are being relentlessly hijacked by the internet and other social networking sites, the Loyolite is a brave challenge to this onslaught. This magazine is a living proof that the candle of creativity, honed and nurtured in great institutions, is not even close to being extinguished by the internet and its minions. It is said that no two snowflakes are alike, the talent present here on this sprawling campus too is equally diverse. This magazine, which is a culmination of all those talents, is an epitome of the enthusiasm and the effort of the students in expressing their talents on paper. In this magazine creativity is not language-biased. Articles that leave readers on the edge of their seats or in the deepest of thoughts are found in regional languages as well. This edition of the Loyolite intends to give the reader a deeper insight into the plethora of talents the students of Loyola possess This year, the greatest challenge for the Editorial Board was to choose the best two articles from each class. Though each article redefined creativity and imagination, just two could be chosen to keep to the limited pages alotted. With the correct recepies and timely guidance of Father Varghese Anikuzhy and our dear teachers we have laid the fare before you. It was a pleasure and great experience stirring the melting pot of creative ideas... one may taste the delightful recipes and savour the subtleties or look for what is amiss. We leave it to you how you partake in the feast. All are welcome to this great melange of budding ideas.

It is a serious failure on the part of parents, especially educated parents, to dance to the tune of their wards. THE LOYOLITE 2012 9 For the last twelve years of my life here I had a humble man clad in white as my mentor- Fr Varghese Anikuzhy to the world and Father to us. The special attachment began with an unforgettable incident way back in 2000. My parents came in the evening to take me home f and we went to see Father before leaving. He looked at my uniform and said “What is this?” I was bewildered as I had made sure that it hadn’t got dirty at all. He then told me “Look at your uniform! It is so clean. Is this how a Loyolite goes back home from school? Go to the grounds. Play and come back. A Loyolite will go home only after he has played and thoroughly enjoyed himself.” I never expected a ifr school Principal to say something like that. As years rolled by, he taught us that we should strive for “ad majoram nostrae scholae gloriam” (for the greater glory of our school). There have been so many occasions when he showed me the right path to traverse. He taught us that God only shows us the way; we have to tread on it on Loyolite our own. He taught me in twelve years what no other person could possibly have taught me in a lifetime. To him, I owe my actions, my hard work, my success, my moments of glory ....my life. On joining Loyola, I relieved my mother from the trouble of providing me with lunch. Lunch for generations of Loyolites means the fine food that Joseph Uncle brings to the open stage on all class days. No one stands in a queue for the food. When I became the school leader, many teachers asked me to discipline the crowd. I never felt the need for that. We never needed to be in line and spoon-fed.

I have shown you a few pages of the diary of my life. But there are many more pages, mostly smudged by tears. And it is now time for me to end my words. I’m not sure whether I’ve been a good example to all of you. I’ve tried my best to walk along the path carved out by the likes of Vivek Krishnan, Arun John , Vishnu Dattan and others. But I do not know whether I have been successful in the effort. However, carrying the maroon crest on my chest for thirteen years If you don’t strive in has definitely given me laudable qualities. 12 THE LOYOLITE 2012 The word social means different things to different people. To an internet addict it means Facebook, to a more humane individual, a student it means a world of huge textbooks, long lectures and boredom. The fitting finale to the day's events was the lively dance of the Loyola One Step Bunch followed by the once-in-a-life- time performance put up by the renowned pianist and music director Mr. Stephen Devassy. As the moments ticked by, the participants forgot that they were represent ing their own schools at a competition and almost all stu dents danced together to the music with which Devassy suffused the campus. This great musician doubled up as the chief guest of the concluding function. The lucky win ners were dipped out of the box before announcing the event-wise results. Holy Angel’s ISC school walked away with the prestigious Nataraja by winning five out of seven events, while Sarvodaya Central Vidyalaya emerged the runners up at their debut La Fest. Gokul Ashok Thampi of TRINS and Sanjana Joeboy of HAISC were crowned Mr. and Ms. Lafest respectively. The city’s first inter-school cultural fest with a fifteen- I year- old legacy had its 16th edition held on the 9th of July, 2011. This edition was totally different as it was con sidered as an event held in connection with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Loyola School. La Fest 2011 bore the tagline “Your tryst with 7th heaven" and the content of the whole programme proved to stick to that. La Fest 2011 had two new events added to the classic events list— the off-stage event Shoot @ Sight to zero in on the best photo graphic skills the on-stage event Rock N’ Role to dis cover the top teen actors. The day started with the inaugural ceremony with Shri. O.N.V.Kurup as the chief guest. The cer emonial lamp was lit by all the dignitaries on the dais and the school leaders of all the fourteen participating schools. The most interesting part of the inaugural ceremony was the unveiling of the Nataraja trophy for the overall champi ons. The 'heaven intro’ that followed exhibited the out-of-

arring the Sports day it is the only venue where Loyolites fight it out against each other and prove their mettle. B It is that venue which every Loyolite dreams of performing at, that venue which has proved over time, that Loyolites are special, not just in academics but also in various extra- curricular activities. Have no doubts, it is our own Youth Festival. At the outset, the Youth Festival seems to be just a four-day extravaganza. It was much more. High-octave preparations started right from day one when the zero periods were brought in and teachers in charge of the houses were named. The scripts were ready, the songs were decided. The assembly competitions and the second trip events added spice in the run-up to the event. The day arrived soon enough. YF-2K11 was inaugurated by Miss Anju Joseph of Idea Star Singer fame. The audience was delighted at the three melodious numbers sung to them. Soon the curtains parted, the lights shone. Then it was the students all the way. Their voices pleased, their dance moves thrilled, their monoacts entertained..., and what not! The list is endless. The dramas, group instrumentals and group dances brought to the fore the spirit of teamwork and unity to achieve a common goal. Expectations soared to an entirely new level when the most awaited event of the YF was staged - Groom’ em’ Young. The hosts Govind G. Nair, Varun Ramdas and Siddarth S. Rajiv had their share of funny one liners, props, situations, etc. At the end of it all it was Master Sobin Antony of X A who walked away with the coveted title ‘Master Loyola’. The day could not have got any better as our Std. XII brothers came up with a song and dance of their own - a perfect treat. For the closing ceremony we had the prominent actor Mr. Vijayakumar as the Chief Guest. The winners received their awards. JJ house was declared the winner of YF 2K11. And as the National Anthem was sung each and every Loyolite in the majestic Indoor Stadium stood up, his mind filled with the pride that he was a Loyolite and that he was able to witness the unique feast. •

anuary 7, 2012, the day that witnessed the hearts of approximately 2000 or so Loyolites beating in unison to the rhythm J of the epilogue of the 50th year of the Loyola fraternity. The School Day ’12 was indeed a worthy successor to the lineage of the 49 past ones, all at one with the Loyolite’s heart. This year’s mega event was graced by the Honorary Speaker of the KLA Mr. G. Karthikeyan. His speech was inspiring and he urged the students to aim higher and higher. The parents glowed with pride on seeing their children walk up to receive the accolades for their achievements in the academic year. The most enviable laurel-the ‘Best Loyolite’-went to Vivek B. Krishnan of XII A, an all-rounder and a Loyolite to the core. The night kick-started with food for all palates, put together as a Multilingual Programme which set the night’s music to flow. Then, the s lights dimmed, and the curtains parted as the tiny tots of UKG enticed the audience with their colourful display. As the night advanced, the audience was served with a treat for all senses. The musicians of various classes displayed their mastery of the lyrical arts with their enthralling melodies. The dances of the night ranged from a lively show depicting the four seasons in ‘Seasons of the world’ to the LOBA’s mesmerizing steps to prove that you can take them out of Loyola but you can’t take Loyola out of them. The colourful items of classes VI to IX which brought to life the changing hues of a man’s life augmented a sense of continuity to the thematic presentation. Spring, symbolized the exuberant vivacious childhood, Summer the flamboyance of youth, Autumn the mellowed maturity of middle age and Winter the wisdom and stability of old age. The outgoing batch emotionally reached the audience with a walk down the memory lane. It was their swansong to the place that “taught them their A’s and B’s and their 2’s and 3’s”. In the next half-hour the stage played host to the theatrical panache of class XI, in the drama, ‘The Last Appointment’. It held the audience spellbound as they brought to stage the uncommon tale of the common man, something that lived up to the flyers and promo videos circulated beforehand. The School Day was indeed a golden day, a day that made everyone feel proud to be a part of Loyola.

They were very happy. It was a :: memorable day, a precious and great day in my life. To share my happiness with my friends and teachers I bought them sweets. My cousins and parents congratulated me. My heart was filled with joy. First of all I thanked God for giving me such an opportunity. We must build sanctuaries Lightning struck, thunder rumbled; to stop this hunting. We must save not only tigers In the battlefield that lay jumbled, but also other animals from being endangered. So Thousands of bodies lay in the dirt we can also save life! Forgetting the month of May and mirth. « Never had they thought, as they fought That this would be so terrible Leaving everyone miserable. i Guns roared, planes took off, Missiles went with a sound like cough. AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A BAG

Biio Francis. VI C

i was made of leather from animals. The first thing I saw was that I was in a shop in which I was stitched by a tailor. Then I was sold to another shopkeeper at ‘Good Morning Stores’. I was put under all the bags. Then after several days I was bought by a boy named Bijo. I was taken to a house in Kumarapuram. The boy wore me several times and looked at the mirror. I looked pretty and handsome in my grey and black colours. After a few days I was taken to school with a new class teacher Mary Mathew madam, who taught my master English. There were many teachers like Renu Madam and Roshni Madam. My master took care of me for a few days but then he threw me down. r

April 2, 2011 is a memorable day for me and all cricket lovers. This is the day when Team India - “The Men in Blue”, brought back the World Cup after 28 years. It was surprising to see India pull it off, for I thought that India would lose as they lost their way in the first innings. To make matters worse was the loss of two early wickets of Tendulkar and Sehwag when India went in, to bat. However, Gambhir and Kohli stabilized the innings in the middle and it was left to Captain
