The majority were in support roles as typists, secretaries and clerks but, during the 1920s and 1930s, a significant number held important posts. As a modern industry, the BBC took a largely progressive approach towards the ‘career women’ on its staff, many of whom were in jobs that were developed specifically for the new medium of broadcasting. Women worked as drama producers, advertising representatives and Children’s Hour Organisers. They were talent spotters, press officers and documentary makers. Three women attained Director status while others held significant administrative positions. This article considers in what ways it was the modernity and novelty of broadcasting, combined with changing employment possibilities and attitudes towards women evident after the First World War, that combined to create the conditions in which they could excel. Keywords BBC, employment, history, interwar, radio, women Introduction In the conclusion to her chapter on women in the BBC in Women in Top Jobs, the sociologist Isobel Allen queried ‘whether women had done as well in the BBC as might be expected’ (Fogarty et al., 1971: 214). She pointed out that most of the very senior women were about to retire with no obvi- ous female successors. ‘There is certainly no reason to imagine’, she continued, ‘that anything like the situation in the early 1930s, when almost half the departmental heads in the BBC were women, could be repeated in the near future’ (Fogarty et al., 1971: 214).

    Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore Pelléas et Mélisande is a strange, haunting work, typical of the Symbolist movement in that it hints at truths, desires and aspirations just out of reach, yet allied to a longing for transcendence is a tragic, self-destructive element whereby everybody suffers and comes to grief or, as in the case of the lovers, even dies - yet frequent references to fate and Arkel’s ascribing that doleful outcome to ineluctable destiny, rather than human weakness or failing, suggest that they are drawn, powerless, to destruction like moths to the flame. The central enigma of Mélisande’s origin and identity is never revealed; that riddle is reflected in the wispy, amorphous property of the music itself, just as the text, adapted from Maeterlinck’s play, is vague and allusive, rarely open or direct in its expression of the characters’ velleities. The opera was highly innovative and controversial, a gateway to a new style of modern music which discarded and re-invented operatic conventions in a manner which is still arresting and, for some, still unapproachable. It is a work full of light and shade, sunlit clearings in gloomy forest, foetid dungeons and sea-breezes skimming the battlements, sparkling fountains, sunsets and brooding storms - all vividly depicted in the score. Any francophone Francophile will delight in the nuances of the parlando text. There is no ensemble or choral element beyond the brief sailors’ “Hoé! Hisse hoé!” offstage and only once do voices briefly intertwine, at the climax of the lovers' final duet.

BCTF President – Glen Hansman As we approach the beginning of a new school year, disturbing signs of a resurgent neo-Nazi, white supremacist movement have got teachers talking about how best to confront these toxic forces and their potential impact on our students. It’s a dilemma we have faced over the decades. Here’s an excerpt from an article in the April 1943 issue of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation magazine: “In a very special sense, the teachers are involved in this great conflict, for they in themselves carry the light of learning and the torch of freedom — which Nazism and Fascism seek to extinguish — for if these tyrannies succeed, education ceases and propaganda takes its place. Between these two conceptions lies the world of difference between democracy and dictatorship. There can be no meeting place or compromise between them.” From the Second World War to Charlottesville, we are reminded how critically important it is to continue educating young people to understand that “world of difference between democracy and dictatorship.” B.C. teachers have a lot of experience with anti-racist education.

College, Dausa, Rajasthan, India Abstract: E.M Forster’s fiction is significant because of his ability to express some of the major dilemma of the twentieth century, in spite of their multiplicity and complexity, in the order of art. Forster’s novel Maurice (1971) touches the sensitivity of modern society to relations and questions of deep human relationships. The present paper explores in detail the emergence of the inner life of Maurice in the face of a hostile society. Index Terms – Inner life, homosexuality, taboo, quest, identity, meaningful relationship, psychological tensions, light and dark, creation. E.M Forster is a liberal writer whose works continually deal with the ideal of a cosmopolitan tolerant culture which would encourage the free and fullest growth of the individual. His portrayal of human relationships in the social, economic and political aspects was all the time concerned with the ways and means by which human beings can break down the fetters of narrow-minded conventions, destructive and inhibiting human freedom. Forster’s fiction is significant because of his ability to express some of the major dilemmas of the twentieth century, in spite of their multiplicity and complexity, the order of art. Forster’s Maurice (1971) touches the sensitivity of modern society to relations and questions of deep human relationships. In his earlier novels, Forster had dealt with the earth-connected, passionate life in its conflict with middle class society.

Forcano Abstract According to literature and film studies and from the point of view of the influence of classical tradition on Western culture—classical Greek tradition, in this case—this article analyses the inevitable—to a certain degree—betrayal by screenwriters of the literary texts that they adapt. However, in spite of being practically inevitable, Dr. Pau Gilabert indicates what are, in his opinion, the limits beyond which Ivory/Hesketh-Harvey should not have gone in order not to dilute the Hellenic temper of E. M. Forster’s Maurice. As citizens of this and the last century, we are very much used to the undeniable pleasure of seeing remarkable masterpieces of world literature on the screen. Images quite often endow the text with a power of seduction that appears as ‘inherent to’ and ‘exclusive of’ visual expression, and, yet, it would be absurd not to admit that ‘an image is not always worth a thousand words’. If we consider that all translations are betrayals, the translation of a literary text into images must necessarily fall into the same category. Therefore, these short reflections will deal with this idea, with J. Ivory’s small or great betrayals, whether conscious or unconscious—actually, Ivory and Hesketh-Harvey’s, since both were responsible for the script—when he brought E. M. Forster’s Maurice to the screen,3 taking into account

Baritone Jonathan G. Michie, this year’s Isabel and Marvin Leibowitz Young Artist, was one of the winners. (43). The reply might be that Forster's novel is "about" such matters as love, art, self-realization, Edwardian manners, feminism, values and their revision, exposure and conceal- ment, completion and interruption, daily life and celestial life, the subconscious mind, language, myth-and so on.

FORSTER HAS BEEN TARGETED for his status as a member Eof the Empire's elite as often as he has been celebrated for his sensitive portrayal of India's reaction to colonial rule. The subtle degrees to which Forster participated in the pleasures of conquest while writing against impe­ rialism is complicated by his privately lived marginalization as a homosexual. Nowhere does Forster oscillate more sharply between an Orientalist and anti-imperialist impulse than in those works in which the issue ofhomosexu­ ality intersects questions of race and empire. In such works, Forster seems as critical of the divisiveness of colonial rule as he is stifled by the lingering pall of Victorian values at the turn of the twentieth century. Yet, Forster's own liberal humanist ideals seem stretched to the limits of the imagination in representations of interracial sexual unions which, even when allowed to run their natural course, invariably culminate in disconcerting scenes of domination, violence and brutality. Forster's contradictions notwithstanding, his writing rarely fails to articulate the central role of sexual politics in the discourse of colonialism, at home and abroad. The inextricable relationship between sexuality and empire is vividly imagined in Forster's posthumously published collection, The Life to Come and Other Stories ( 1972).
