Total NZ Survey 1 2020 The New Zealand Commercial Radio Industry released the S1 first quarter Radio Audience Data into the market today and it reveals that over 3.6 million New Zealanders were listening to radio every week as the country went into lockdown and over 3.3 million of those listen to commercial radio stations. The GfK Radio Audience Measurement survey contacts at least 14,000 respondents across New Zealand every year. The fieldwork for this survey ceased in late March just before the lockdown was announced. RBA CEO Jana Rangooni says “This is an unprecedented situation for the country and the Industry agreed at this time to suspend all fieldwork until at least late June. This means there will be no S2 Release as originally scheduled for June 25th. We hope to make a decision about options for the remainder of the year by the end of May.” NZME CEO Michael Boggs says Radio’s incredible value to New Zealanders has been reinforced in recent weeks, as it invariably does in times of crisis and uncertainty. “Radio, like all media has been focused on supporting our audiences through this period. Whether it be supporting the Government as a Civil Defence Emergency broadcast partner, delivering round the clock local, national and international news coverage or by keeping New Zealanders entertained and connected, Radio is delivering for audiences as it always does in times like these.” MediaWorks CEO Michael Anderson says that it's clear that New Zealanders are turning to Radio as a trusted source for news and entertainment especially through breaking events like Covid-19.

While 2020 saw declines of around 15% in radio revenue as the impacts of COVID were felt by the sector, audiences have held up in 2021. CEO of the Radio Broadcasters Association, Jana Rangooni, says "There is some irony in this for the industry as more and more New Zealanders of all ages turned to radio for trusted news, information, music and entertainment with most stations seeing cume increases from the same time last year." TRB GM Peter Richardson noted "The survey once again demonstrates radio’s ability to reach a critical mass of New Zealanders who listen to commercial radio each and every week. When one adds in the effectiveness of the medium and the ability to respond rapidly it is clear why radio remains an important medium for advertisers.     Magic Weapons: China's political influence activities under Xi Jinping Professor Anne-Marie Brady Global Fellow, Wilson Center, Washington, DC; Department of Political Science and International Relations University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand In September 2014 Xi Jinping gave a speech on the importance of united front work— political influence activities—calling it one of the CCP’s “magic weapons”. The Chinese government’s foreign influence activities have accelerated under Xi. China’s foreign influence activities have the potential to undermine the sovereignty and integrity of the political system of targeted states. Conference paper presented at the conference on “The corrosion of democracy under China’s global influence,” supported by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, and hosted in Arlington, Virginia, USA, September 16-17, 2017. Key points: • CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping is leading an accelerated expansion of political influence activities worldwide. • The expansion of these activities is connected to both the CCP government’s domestic pressures and foreign agenda. • The paper creates a template of the policies and modes of China’s expanded foreign influence activities in the Xi era. • The paper uses this template to examine the extent to which one representative small state, New Zealand, is being targeted by China’s new influence agenda. Executive Summary In June 2017 the New York Times and The Economist featured stories on China's political influence in Australia. The New York Times headline asked "Are Australia's Politics too Easy to Corrupt?,"1 while The Economist sarcastically referred to China as the "Meddle Country."2 The two articles were reacting to an investigation by Fairfax Media and ABC into the extent of China's political interference in Australia,3 that built on internal inquiries into the same issue by ASIO and Australia's Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in 2015 and 2016.

    A Passion for Radio Radio Waves and Community www.comunica.org/passion/ Chapter 10 Zoom Black Magic Liberation Radio: The birth of the micro-radio movement in the USA Ron Sakolsky In the United States, in response to the government carrot of licensing status and the stick of anti-piracy crackdowns, many once adventurous community radio broadcasters have toned down their oppositional elements and have consciously or unconsciously become engaged in a process of self-censorship. One sign pointing in a different direction is the micro-radio movement, originating not on a college campus or in a university-based community, but in the heart of the black ghetto. This is the story of one micro-radio station, WTRA/Zoom Black Magic Liberation Radio in Springfield, Illinois. The story unfolds at the John Hay Homes, a sprawling, low income public housing project located in Springfield’s east side. It is a housing project that is almost exclusively African-American. Located just a short distance from the enshrined home of Abraham Lincoln, it’s a part of Springfield that isn’t on the tourist map. During the mid- eighties, the John Hay Tenants Rights Association (TRA) was formed to do issue-based, neighbourhood organising. Focusing first on expressway expansion and related school traffic safety issues, the TRA moved on to the issues of school bussing and the inadequate representation of the east side community under the archaic, commission form of government. Calling for more community control, they successfully challenged the local black bourgeoisie who claimed to represent them in a historic voting rights lawsuit, which resulted in the commission system being replaced with an aldermanic one.

    I " A I WOMEN, CULTU AND COMMUNITY ACCESS BRO CASTING A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Canterbury by Rowan Mary Jeffrey Gender Studies University of Canterbury 2004 Abstract This research is a case study of the participation of women at Plains FM 96.9, one of eleven non-profit, community owned and operated community access radio stations in AotearoalNew Zealand. Located in Christchurch city, Plains FM broadcasts community-produced programming in twenty different languages to the Canterbury region. As a community access station, it is committed to meeting community development objectives through the provision of access to the airwaves for groups that are underserved by mainstream media. In this thesis, I locate Plains FM within the wider historical and discursive context of the AotearoalNew Zealand medias cape and draw upon theories of communications, community development, social movements and feminist post- structuralism in order to examine the transformative potential of the station and the ongoing complex challenges that it faces. Drawing on analysis of interviews with fifty-one women at Plains FM, I explore the ways in which diverse women participants make sense of the station, their involvement within it, and its impact upon their communities. In particular, I highlight women participants' construction of Plains FM as a vehicle for access into the public sphere and for reworking hegemonic boundaries of inclusion/exclusion in both the media/broadcasting and social/cultural realms. I also explore the ways in which boundaries of inclusion/exclusion are negotiated within the station itself and highlight some of the challenges the station faces in its attempt to be an inclusive, diverse and empowering organisation.
