Newstalk Zb Widens Gap to Radio Live Zm’S Fletch Vaughan and Megan Beats the Edge’S Jay-Jay, Mike and Dom^ Media Release for Immediate Release – 2 October 2015 NEWSTALK ZB WIDENS GAP TO RADIO LIVE ZM’S FLETCH VAUGHAN AND MEGAN BEATS THE EDGE’S JAY-JAY, MIKE AND DOM^ 2 October 2015 – The results of the independent TNS New Zealand Commercial Radio Survey 2/2015 are in and Mediaworks has decreased their 18-54 audience by 46,600# listeners, NZME has gained 6,300#. Newstalk ZB has increased the gap##### over Radio Live and Hosking has maintained his share nationally at a stellar 16.7% versus his Paul Henry on 5.8%**. Hosking has also grown his 25-54 to 8.2%**. Newstalk ZB’s gap also widened in Drive time with Duncan Garner losing listeners and Larry Williams gaining them in the key 25-54 demographic. Here, Garner’s audience decreased (4,500) and Williams increased (10,500)###. Williams now has more than double the listeners than Garner###. Dean Buchanan, Managing Director NZME Radio says, “We’re rapt with today’s results. Newstalk ZB will just continue to strengthen further with Marcus Lush joining the Newstalk ZB team, hosting the Night Show from January.” Why is Newstalk ZB so dominant? - Top talent who continue to innovate which is even further demonstrated in their digital and social audience engagement. - Our strategy is very clear that we have channel experts tailoring the right content to the right channels and not same content different channels. ZM Breakfast has had a huge win beating The Edge Breakfast with the most listeners in the critical 18- 39 audience####. “To have an increased share and number of listeners now tuning into ZM reflects on the terrific team ZM are becoming. We also beat The Edge digitally in August+ so ZM is on fire and is exactly tracking to where we want it to be. The great thing is there’s a lot more opportunity in there.” As reported earlier this week NZME Radio rated as the number one radio network* beating Mediaworks radio brands in the August Nielsen Online Ratings measurement report. “Digital is now a key metric for us as this is how the next generation of listeners tune in (10-17). It was fantastic to see The Hits capturing the number one website of any radio station for August. Newstalk ZB, ZM and Flava also had great results out rating their rival stations. We have more registered users on iHeartRadio now (395,000) than there are listeners in the 10-17 year old age group for all of radio nationwide#. The need for advertisers to engage digitally with radio is becoming more significant, which NZME is focused on.” Overall NZME is number one in news (Newstalk ZB)*, number one in sport (Radio Sport)* and Coast is a minuscule 0.1% share away from being number one in music*, which Buchanan called “just a blip and well within margin of error”. The interesting point is that Coast targets a 40 year old plus audience and in this demographic it continues its share growth and holds its number one music position* despite Mediaworks having three stations targeting this demo; The Breeze, Magic and Sound. Specifically in the Auckland and Wellington markets NZME is number one in news, sport and music (Auckland #1 all people 10+ News, Sport & Music share* and Wellington #1 all people 10+ News, Sport, and Music cumulative audience#) and in Christchurch NZME is number one in news and sport*#. Buchanan says, “We have always taken the stance that we are in survey 365 days a year. We are greatly appreciative of the support from our listeners and our advertisers and as a result the compelling content doesn’t stop, these results reflect that.” ENDS SOURCE TNS New Zealand Commercial National Survey 2/2015 (unless otherwise stated) *Station Share (%), All 10+, Mon-Sun 12mn-12mn, unless otherwise stated. #Cumulative Audience (000’s), All 10+, Mon-Sun 12mn-12mn, unless otherwise stated. **Station Share (%), All 10+, Mon-Fri 6.00am-8.30am, unless otherwise stated. ###Cumulative Audience (000’s), All 10+, Mon-Fri 4.00-7.00pm, unless otherwise stated. ****Station Share (%), All 10+, Mon-Fri 6.00am-9.00am, unless otherwise stated. ####Cumulative Audience (000’s), All 10+, Mon-Fri 6.00am-9.00am unless otherwise stated. #####Cumulative Audience (000’s), All 10+, Mon-Sun 12mn-12mn S2-2014-S2-2015 ^ Cumulative Audience (000’s), All 18-39, Mon-Fri 6.00am-8.30am +Nielsen Online Ratings, Unique Audience, August 2015 For further information or to speak to Dean Buchanan please contact: Niki Schuck PR +64 21 911 332 [email protected] About New Zealand Media and Entertainment (NZME) NZME is New Zealand Media and Entertainment. • Dxpedition Report from Rose Spit, Haida Gwaii
Rose Spit mini-DXpedition 11 July, 2011. Rose Spit loggings for 11 July, 2011: Medium Wave and Long Wave Here is a compilation of what I heard on an overnight DC only DXpedition to Rose Spit, about 25 km from the closest power lines, on the north east corner of Haida Gwaii. This spit is sandy, and covered in short grasses and strawberry plants, so ideal for remote DXpeditions, as it is accessible by 4x4 wheel drive vehicles. Conditions were not very good with the A index around 13, and K indices between 2 and 4, and solar flux at 90.6. The loggings below on MW are almost all from using a 750’ BOG aimed at New Zealand, unterminated. Here’s an aerial photo of the Spit. I was located just a few hundred meters past the tree line, in about the center of the spit, which faces N/NE. The larger photo below shows Rose Spit looking back to the West/South West to the treeline. Lot’s of room for BOGs! The figure below shows a view in the opposite direction down the spit to the N/NW where the 750’ BOGs were located. The NZ wire could have easily been double the distance. A more likely scenario for next time might be a phased BOG array towards NZ or dual Wellbrook delta loops. My wonderful DXpedition vehicle: A Nissan Frontier, 4 door, 4x4. Very comfortable, with a folding down front passenger seat, making a perfect platform for the radios and computer. Also a comfortable rear seat to sleep.

  • JMAD Media Ownership Report
JMAD New Zealand Media Ownership Report 2014 Published: 2014 December 5 Author: Merja Myllylahti This New Zealand Ownership Report 2014 is the fourth published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD). The report finds that the New Zealand media market has failed to produce new, innovative media outlets, and that all the efforts to establish non-profit outlets have proved unsustainable. The report confirms the general findings of previous reports that New Zealand media space has remained highly commercial. It also confirms the financialisation of media ownership in the form of banks and fund managers. The report also observes that in 2014 convergence between New Zealand mass media and the communications sector generally was in full swing. Companies, such as Spark (former Telecom NZ), started to compete head-to-head with the traditional broadcasters on the online on-demand video and television markets. The American online video subscription service Netflix is entering the NZ market in March 2015. Additionally, the report notes evidence of uncomfortable alliances between citizen media, politicians, PR companies and legacy media. As Nicky Hager’s Dirty Politics book revealed, the National Party and PR practitioners used the Whale Oil blog to drive their own agendas. Also, events related to Maori TV, TVNZ and Scoop raise questions about political interference in media affairs. It is now evident that the boundaries between mainstream media, bloggers, public relations practitioners and politicians are blurring. Key events and trends concerning New Zealand media Financialisation of mass media ownership confirmed Substantial changes in Fairfax, APN and MediaWorks ownership Competition heats up in online television and video markets Turbulence at Maori TV Blurred lines among politicians, bloggers, journalists and PR practitioners The JMAD New Zealand media ownership reports are available here: http://www.aut.ac.nz/study- at-aut/study-areas/communications/media-networks/journalism,-media-and-democracy-research- centre/journalists-and-projects 1 1.

  • The Roles of Police, Media and Public in Coverage of the Coral-Ellen Burrows Murder Inquiry
JOURNALISM DOWNUNDER Information provision and restriction: The roles of police, media and public in coverage of the Coral-Ellen Burrows murder inquiry ABSTRACT Six-year-old Coral-Ellen Burrows disappeared in September 2003 after her stepfather, Stephen Williams, had apparently dropped her off at school, though in fact he had murdered her. After extensive searches, her body was found 10 days later. Williams pleaded guilty to murder and was duly sentenced. The intensive cross-media coverage of the search for Coral- Ellen—of the kind that Innes (1999) commenting on media and police interactions in Britain calls ‘blitz coverage’, made this case the pre- eminent news story of 2003. However, the attenuated nature of the search also exposed some of the tensions inherent in the relationships between those parties interested in the case. We understand these to consist of six entities which have an existence that is both material and conceptual: these are the victim’s family, possible suspects, the local community, the police, the media, and the national public, in this case envisaged in a dual role as wider community and media-audience. All of these stand in relationship to the more abstract yet rigid institution of the law, whose dictates guide the behaviour of the police, and strongly infl uence that of the media. This paper reports on research carried out by analysis of New Zealand Herald, Wairarapa Times-Age and TV One coverage of the case, and by two interviews with journalists investigating the forces that shaped the media coverage. ANN HARDY AND ALASTAIR GUNN University of Waikato PACIFIC JOURNALISM REVIEW 13 (1) 2007 161 JOURNALISM DOWNUNDER OR 11 days in September 2003, the New Zealand national media gave intensive coverage to the search for a six-year-old girl, Coral-Ellen FBurrows, who went missing between her home and school in Featherston, in the Wairarapa.

JMAD New Zealand Media Ownership Report 2013 Published: November 28, 2013 Author: Merja Myllylahti This New Zealand Ownership Report 2013 published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD) outlines how the financialisation of New Zealand media intensified as News Limited pulled out of Sky TV, and as lenders took 100 percent control of MediaWorks. In 2013, controversy erupted when it was revealed that a journalist’s phone records had been handed to a ministerial inquiry without her consent. The move was condemned by over 300 journalists as the government’s invasion of privacy was seen as a threat to media freedom. The government also passed legislation giving extra surveillance powers to the Government Communication Security Bureau (GCSB). This represented an institutional threat to journalistic autonomy. The report also finds that the bloggers and blogosphere gained prominence and influence in relation to the commercially driven mainstream media. In October 2013, there were 280 ranked blogs in New Zealand, and the top political blogs recorded high visitor numbers. Key events and trends concerning New Zealand media ownership Financial institutions take control of Sky TV and MediaWorks MediaWorks goes into receivership, keeps losing content rights Bauer media grows in influence, buys The Listener and other magazines Sky TV stirred, but not shaken by the Commerce Commission and new competitors Leading newspapers stall paywalls, local papers launch them APN and Fairfax newsrooms shrink, profit boosted by asset sales and job cuts This New Zealand Media Ownership Report is the third published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD).
