THE LAND OF PROMISE GENERAL INFORMATION Palawan is an island province of the Philippines that is located in the MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon & Palawan) Region. It is the largest province in the country in terms of total area of jurisdiction. Its capital is Puerto Princesa City, but it is governed independently from the province. The history of Palawan (means Kapalauan in Meranau or Kepulauan in standard Malay or Islands in English) may be traced back 22,000 years ago, as confirmed by the discovery of bone fragments of the Tabon Man in the municipality of Quezon. Known as the Cradle of Philippine Civilization, the Tabon Caves consist of a series of chambers where scholars and anthropologists discovered the remains of the Tabon Man along with his tools and a number of artifacts. ENVIRONMENT & NATURE Known the world over as the Philippines' last ecological frontier, the Tabon Cave – Cradle of Philippine province of Palawan harbors vast tracts of topical rainforests and a Civilization huge expanse of marine wilderness. Thick canopies of trees carpet mountain ranges running the length of the mainland. Fringing reefs and coral atolls open a new realm to discover under the clear waters surrounding this archipelago of more than 1,700 islands. Ribbons of meandering streams and rivers wind through the mountains, nurturing robust stands of mangrove in the lowlands before flowing out to the sea. The Last Frontier Palawan probably has more protected areas than any other province in the Philippines. In the middle of the Sulu Sea lies the Tubbataha Reefs, a pair of coral atolls which was declared a National Marine Park by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 306 issued in August, 1988. In 1993, it was named a World Heritage Site for its highly diverse collection of fishes and other marine life by the United Nations Tubbataha Reef – Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Sub Aquatic Beauty TOURISM Lodging places range from upscale resorts to affordable family-owned inns. Among the highly rated resorts in Palawan are the Lagen and Miniloc Resorts of Ten Knots Development Corporation in El Nido, Club Noah Isabelle in Taytay, Club Paradise in Busuanga, and Wilds of Calauit Safari Park Amanpulo in Pamalican Island in Cuyo. Modest accommodation is also available in tourism destinations like Sabang near the Puerto Princesa City Subterranean River National Park, Port Barton in San Vicente , and El Nido town.
