Vivian-Lee Nyitray & Pashaura Singh, Co-Chairpersons This dissertation examines the ways Sikhs relate to Guru Nanak and the tradition he founded through the janam-sakhi (birth stories) narratives that present his life’s story. Advancing the claim that pedagogy informs participation and demonstrating how various janam-sakhi authors condition their pedagogical presentations of Guru Nanak’s life story through the form and content of their presentation, this dissertation examines the impact of the janam-sakhis, not simply as historical relics, but as holding a continuing role facilitating and conditioning Sikhs’ relationships with Guru Nanak and the Panth (community). As social narratives, the janam-sakhis are a shared discourse about how Sikhs choose to commemorate and honor Guru Nanak, conveying interpretations of his life as relevant to their own and acting in accordance with that interpretation. Sikhs reflect on his life, example, and instruction in order to achieve the religious goals he revealed. Participation in the janam-sakhis, then, is a product of the narratives’ instructional impact, their social functions, and the participants’ direct loving relationship with Guru Nanak himself. All of vi these processes work in varied and intertwined ways through the pedagogical and participatory projects of the janam-sakhis. Sikhs’ identity, rooted as it is in the relationships constructed by the janam-sakhis, is still being negotiated and defined by their understandings of who Guru Nanak was, how he lived his life, and how they are to live in accordance with the traditions he established. Sikhs participation with the janam-sakhis connects them to Guru Nanak as a personal teacher, their Guru, and all other Sikhs who have or are devoted to the same goals. ABSTRACT Bhai Mani Singh is an important personality in Sikh History. He was a very good speaker and writer. He performed the service of a priest in Amritsar and played an important role in reforming the dismal conditions there. He spent all his life for saving the unity, integrity and honour of Sikh religion and promoted knowledge among the Sikhs by becoming the founder of the Giani Sect. He created an example for the coming generations by sacrificing himself at the age of ninety years. The sacrifice of Bhai Mani Singh filled every Sikh with a wave of anger and impassion. His unique martyrdom had turned the history of Sikhism forwards. His personality, in real meaning; is a source of inspiration for his followers. Sikh history, from the very beginning, has an important place in human welfare and social reforms for its sacrifices and martyrdoms. The ancestors and leaders of Sikh sect made important contributions at different times and places. Bhai Mani Singh showed his ability in different tasks initiated by Sikh Gurus by remaining in Sikh sect ant took the cause of social reforms to a new height. To keep the dignity of Sikh History intact, he sacrificed his life by getting himself chopped into pieces at the age of 90 for not being able to pay the prescribed taxes.1 While making an unparallel contribution in the Sikh history, Bhai Mani Singh performed the service of a priest in Amritsar and played an important role in reforming the dismal conditions there.

The representation of women within these sakhis can give us an indication of the general views of women of the time. A lack of representation of women within the janamsakhi supports the argument that women have traditionally been assigned a subordinate role within patriarchal society.

    Sikhism originated with Guru Nanak five centuries ago. From an early age he showed a deeply spiritual character. He broke away from his family’s traditions and belief systems, refusing to participate in empty rituals. Nanak married and entered business, but remained focused on God and meditation. Eventually Nanak became a wandering minstrel. Guru Nanak travelled far and wide teaching people the message of one God who dwells in every one of His creations and constitutes the eternal Truth. He composed poetry in praise of one God, and set it to music. He rejected idolatry, and the worship of demigods. He spoke out against the caste system and he set up a unique spiritual, social, and political platform based on equality, fraternal love, goodness, and virtue. Gurunanak When & Where Born Nanak was born to Kalyan Chand Das Bedi, popularly shortened to Mehta Kalu, and Mata Tripta on 15 April 1469 at Rāi Bhoi Kī Talvaṇḍī (present day Nankana Sahib, Punjab, Pakistan) near Lahore. Brief Life History of Guru Nanak His father was the local patwari (accountant) for crop revenue in the village of Talwandi. His parents were both Hindus and belonged to the merchant caste. At the age of around 16 years, Nanak started working under Daulat Khan Lodi, employer of Nanaki's husband. This was a formative time for Nanak, as the Puratan (traditional) Janam Sakhi suggests, and in his numerous allusions to governmental structure in his hymns, most likely gained at this time. Commentaries on his life give details of his blossoming awareness from a young age. At the age of five, Nanak is said to have voiced interest in divine subjects.

Beyond Limits was conceptualized by FOD to a give platform to this talent to showcase their exclusive artwork, which otherwise looked impossible due to barriers- physical, financial, communicational and attitudinal. This noble thought and work has borne fruit; this exhibition is 10th in ‘Beyond Limits’ series. This year, Beyond Limits has again received record breaking participation with jury finding it extremely difficult to select the works for display. Despite the strict selection carried out, the works of 48 artists have been chosen including one with an intellectual disability. Amongst the selected artists many have been honored with Bachelors and Masters degree in Fine Arts. There are many who are currently pursuing their studies in Fine Arts. A few of the participating artists have years of experience in arts to speak for them while 10 of them are getting first opportunity to showcase their work in Beyond Limits.

Abstract This paper is oriented towards identifying the various elements that went into the formation of the self perception of the Sikh soldiers. The origins of the Martial Race theory, that was used very effectively and innovatively by the British to mobilise the Sikhs and induct them into the most vital and visible echelons of the British Indian army, will be traced. The socio-religious and economic implications that made the Sikhs readily accept and perpetuate the martial race considerations will be explored. The hard pragmatism, realistic evaluation and real-political considerations that intertwined to lend credence and support to the perception of the Sikhs as the premier martial community of India in not only the Army top brass and officers, but also British decision making and opinion forming class and institutions in Britain will be dwelled upon. The chapter will look into the self perception of Sikhs and the various ways in which they were viewed by the British, both as a community and as soldiers. Keywords- Sikh, British, Soldiers, Perception, Martial Race Theory Ashis Nandy in his book ‘The Intimate enemy’1 puts forward the contention that colonial cultures bind the ruler and the ruled into an ‘unbreakable dyadic relationship’. Many Indians unconsciously identified their salvation in emulating the British – in friendship and in enmity. They may have not shared the British idea of Martial races- the hyper masculine, manifestly courageous, superbly loyal Indians castes and subcultures mirroring the British middle class sexual stereotypes- but they did resurrect the ideology of the martial races latent in the traditional Indian concept of statecraft and gave the idea a new centrality.
