But when their days as Gauchos come to a close, many of these players also seem to disappear, and their adoring fens never hear from them again. Unless, of course, you are Brian Shaw. The former Gaucho was drafted in the first round of the 1988 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. He was later traded to the Miami Heat, where he just fin ished his fifth season in the league. Shaw was Mr. Everything during his two years at UCSB. In his second season (1987-88), Shaw led the Gauchos in scoring (13.3 ppg), rebounding (8.7 rpg), assists (6.1 apg) and steals (1.6 spg). But not every former Gaucho has been able to remain in the spotlight after UCSB. Many of the players whose college eligibil ity ended have also found success playing professional basketball — overseas. Currently, six former Gauchos are having successful basketball careers in foreign countries. Scott Fisher (UCSB 1982-86) was named the Most Valuable Player in Australia this past season for the second time in the last four years. Conner Henry (1982-86) is playing in Spain. Brian Vaughns (1986-87) is playing in Australia after playing a few years in Greece. Mike Doyle (1987-88) is playing in France. • The Fire Inside Kobe Bryant
The Fire Inside Kobe Bryant Chris Ballard June 25, 2009 SI A GREAT MOMENT IN HUMILITY IT WAS not. After scoring 18 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter of Game 1 of the Conference finals against Denver, Kobe Bryant said of his scoring prowess, "If I wanted to go out there and put up 35 points a night, I could do that." Granted, the Los Angeles Lakers star was just being honest, but tact would dictate that he let others say such things about him. As you may have noticed, though, Bryant isn't big on tact. Time and again over the last decade he has announced the particulars of his awesomeness. As teammate Luke Walton dryly puts it, "Kobe does not lack for confidence." Just as Bryant's bravado irks some—O.K., many—it also makes him riveting to watch: Like the man himself, the manner in which he bears down is never subtle. Spurs forward Bruce Bowen, Bryant's foil these many years, says there's no indicator of an impending scoring binge, joking that you can't tell "by the way he chews his gum or something." But that's not true at all. Rather, his eruptions are almost comically predictable. Former teammate Devean George, now with the Dallas Mavericks, speaks of "that Kobe face where he starts looking around all pissed off." His coach at Lower Merion High in Ardmore, Pa., Gregg Downer, says he can recognize this expression even on TV. In these moments Bryant's youthful impudence, which flummoxed Del Harris when he was L.A.'s coach during Bryant's first two years in the league, resurfaces.

  • Racial Double Standards? the Case of Expected Performance and Dismissals of Head Coaches In
Racial double standards? The case of expected performance and dismissals of head coaches in NBA Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez, Julio del Corral, Andrés Maroto ABSTRACT Professional basketball in the US provides an opportunity to test racial differences in the labor market. In contrast to other professional sports, such as baseball or American football, and, more deeply, to other economic sectors, black Americans are represented in influencing positions as head coaches in this competitive setting. The paper investigates the influence of the race of the coach and performance (winning ratio and an efficiency index relative to expectations) on dismissal decisions. The data includes coach- team information over a 20-year period of time in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the analysis uses several probit models. The results show that black head coaches are more likely to be fired and less prone to quit than white head coaches, ceteris paribus. Both measures of performance (efficiency and victories) also play a significant role in dismissals. Keywords: Basketball, Coaches, Dismissal, Efficiency, Race, Performance, NBA 1 1. Introduction In the words of Samuel Johnson, racial discrimination was a fact "too evident for detection and too gross for aggravation" in the American society of the first part of the 20th century (Arrow, 1998, p. 92). African Americans had a strictly limited access to certain jobs, which prevented them from creating a social network and reaching top positions (Ibarra, 1995). In recent years, although African Americans still face barriers to access leadership jobs in certain sectors, they have successfully scale top positions in professional sports, particularly in basketball.

ABRAMS* "I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, and wear Reeboks."- Shaquille O'Neal Some sports commentators say that professional basketball players are the world's finest athletes; only a few men make it to the pinnacle of the sport, the National Basketball Association (NBA). For them the game can be quite lucrative, even without adding in their endorsement income. These tall, agile, and fleet-footed denizens of the court play a game of modest origins. Basketball was invented in the winter of 1891 at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts by a creative Canadian-born instructor, Dr. James Naismith. His charge was to develop an athletic "distraction" that would amuse his physical education students during the dreary months of a New England winter. From such humble beginnings, the game grew nationally and internationally.
