The banded purple and yellow colouring of the material extracted from Treak Cliff at Castleton cannot be matched by fluorite that is known from anywhere else in the world. The reason for its rarity lies in the unusual geology of the reef limestone of Treak Cliff. When cut and worked into ornaments or jewellery, Blue John is beautiful. The definitive book on Derbyshire Blue John was written 20 years ago by Trevor Ford, but has long been out of print. A new, up-dated and improved edition has been prepared for publication by the Society. In the two-part lecture, Tony Waltham presents an overview of Blue John, its mining and its uses as a decorative stone.

    DERBYSHIRE AND DERBY MINERALS LOCAL PLAN Towards a Minerals Local Plan: Spring 2018 Consultation CHAPTER 2 SPATIAL CONTEXT December 2017 Introduction 2.1 Derbyshire is renowned for its stunning and diverse landscapes, which underpin a valuable leisure and tourism industry. The underlying mineral resources have, to a large degree, helped shape these landscapes. The county is a national leader in minerals production, exhibiting a wealth and diversity of important mineral resources, which bring significant benefits to the area and the UK as a whole, in terms of jobs and economic prosperity and the many products derived from minerals which underpin our modern way of life. Appropriately restored mineral sites have also been of benefit to the environment and biodiversity interests and from the new uses which have been made of restored sites. Mineral development can also bring negative impacts, particularly in terms of the social and environmental impact of extracting the minerals. 2.2 Derbyshire and Derby cover a total area of 983 square miles (including the area of the Peak District National Park (PDNP) which lies within Derbyshire). The Plan area (as shown on Map 1) does not include the PDNP, which covers much of the north-west of the county. Within the county of Derbyshire, there are eight district and borough councils; Amber Valley Borough, Bolsover District, Chesterfield Borough, Derbyshire Dales District, Erewash Borough, High Peak District, North East Derbyshire District and South Derbyshire District. Derby City is a unitary authority, situated in the southern part of the Plan area. 2.3 Map 1 gives a broad picture of the geography of Derbyshire and Derby.

When I started preserving the history of a few of the collieries and Ironworks that I came across, namely Barlow Monkwood and The Arkwright Adelphi, little did I know how many others I would come across in the fullness of time. As I worked with the „Back to the Future Group‟ at Arkwright to preserve the history of the village and in my case the Adelphi Ironworks before the bulldozers moved on the opencast site, the list of collieries I wanted to know about grew. I thought that I would be able pluck a book off the shelves at the library and find out who owned and worked the old collieries shown on the local Ordnance Survey maps and mentioned in the Derbyshire Times and Derbyshire Courier. Unfortunately the book does not exist. There is a little information available on older Derbyshire collieries so I have set out to catalogue and document this information and expand on it to the neglect of the larger collieries which have had many books written about them. I make no apologies for my neglect of the newer, larger collieries. I have tried to outline areas of mining along with individual mines; I have also tried to find where they were by extracting a grid reference for as many of the individual mines as was possible. The Coal Authority at Mansfield has the Abandonment plans for most, but not all collieries since 1850 but these do not give one the full picture.
