([email protected]) The Proms Music Project Summer-2 2020 Sir Edward Elgar Born on 2 June 1857 and died 23 February 1934, Elgar was born near Worcester, England and was one of seven children, all of whom were musical. He played the violin, piano and organ as a child and started composing and conducting after he left school. In 1899 he wrote ‘The Enigma Variations’ one of his biggest and most famous works. Between 1901 & 1930, he wrote his Pomp and Circumstances Marches - there were five altogether but it’s the first one for which he is best known and most widely used. It is traditionally performed at the ‘Last Night of the Proms’. When Elgar was asked to write a piece for the coronation of King Edward VII he used the middle section of this 1st march, put words to it and included it in the ‘Coronation Ode’, it was then published as a song in it’s own right called ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. It was incredibly popular and continues to be so and is often referred to as the unofficial British national anthem. Land of Hope and Glory (Original Lyrics) Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set; God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet, God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.
