PREFACE Sea turtle stocks are declining throughout most of the Wider Caribbean region; in some areas the trends are dramatic and are likely to be irreversible during our lifetimes. According to the IUCN Conservation Monitoring Centre's Red Data Book, persistent over-exploitation, especially of adult females on the nesting beach, and the widespread collection of eggs are largely responsible for the Endangered status of five sea turtle species occurring in the region and the Vulnerable status of a sixth. In addition to direct harvest, sea turtles are accidentally captured in active or abandoned fishing gear, resulting in death to tens of thousands of turtles annually. Coral reef and sea grass degradation, oil spills, chemical waste, persistent plastic and other marine debris, high density coastal development, and an increase in ocean-based tourism have dam-aged or eliminated nesting beaches and feeding grounds. -

SW£ZE)Y Experiment Station, H.S.P.A., Honolulu (Presented at the meeting of February 8, 1943) This moth is attached to the "kou" tree, Cordia subcordata Lamarck. It was described in the family Oecophoridae by Walsing- ham in the Fauna Hawaiiensis, 1(5): 507, 1907, from 19 speci mens collected by Perkins in 1896 in Honolulu. Walsingham con sidered it the same species as the two moths collected by Blackburn prior to 1882, which were determined incorrectly by Butler as Asinis hilarella Walker (Ent. Mo. Mag., 19: 180, 1883). Butler quotes Blackburn as saying: "I have twice taken this insect, though at long intervals, each time it was apparently attracted by light, but seemed very sluggish, and apparently satisfied to sit and look at the light from a distance". The Perkins specimens mentioned above, were from an unrecorded cultivated plant in Honolulu, and the statement was made that it was probably an introduced species. Since 1906, it has been known that Cordia subcordata was its host plant, there being specimens in the H.S.P.A. collection reared from this plant by Terry, August and December, 1906, in Hono lulu. In Proc. Haw. Ent. Soc, 6(3) : 373, 1927, Swezey records finding a Cordia subcordata tree infested with Ethmia caterpillars at Kahului, Maui, October 16, 1926. Several moths were reared by Pemberton from an infested Cordia tree at Black Point, Honolulu, November 20, 1935. It is a medium-sized deciduous tree and very vigorous in growth. According to traditional system, it possesses anthelmintic, purgative, diuretic, expectorant, antipyretic, hepatoprotective and analgesic action. The fruits are edible and used as pickle. The gum obtained from mucilage is used for pasting sheets of paper and as matrix forming material in tablet formulations. Phytochemical investigations show the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, tannins and reducing sugar. Evaluation of pharmacological activities confirmedC. obliqua plant as antimicrobial, hypotensive, respiratory stimulant, diuretic and anti‑inflammatory drug. A number of traditional activities of this plant still need scientific approval which will increase its medicinal potential. This review presents the Pharmacognostic properties, phytochemical constituents, traditional uses and biological activities reported for the plant and it will be helpful to explore the knowledge about Cordia obliqua Willd. for the researchers. Diversity of Bat Species across Dominica Brittany Moore, Hannah Rice, Meredith Stroud Texas A&M University Tropical Field Biology Dominica 2015 Dr. Thomas Lacher Dr. Jim Woolley Abstract: Twelve species of bats can be found on the island of Dominica, however there are still some species that have not been thoroughly catalogued. Our report is based on further findings regarding Artibeus jamaicensis, Sturnira lilium, Ardops nichollsi, Myotis dominicensis, Monophyllus plethodon and Brachyphylla cavernarum. We collected mass, forearm length, hind foot length, ear length, sex, and reproductive condition for every individual bat and then compared this information among species to observe morphological differences. We also added new data to past studies on wing loading and aspect ratios for the species we caught. We found a statistical significance among species in body size measure and wing morphology. Among the bats examined, the measurements can be used in order to positively identify species. Introduction: Dominica, also known as the Nature Island, is home to a great diversity of plants and animals. There are many various habitats ranging from dry forest to montane and elfin rainforest. Within each habitat, one may find species only endemic to that area. Animal activity at night in Dominica is quite different than what can be witnessed during the day. As nighttime falls, the call of the tink frog can be heard all over the island, and the mating click beetles will illuminate even the darkest of forests, but by far the most exciting nocturnal animals are the thousands of bats that come alive when the sun begins to set. -

Vocalizations of Molossus molossus Jessica Leigh Moore Texas A&M University Dominica Study Abroad 2007 Dr. Jim Woolley Dr. Bob Wharton Vocalization of Molossus molossus Abstract: Roost communication, emergence, and echolocation calls of Molossus molossus were recorded and analyzed using Avisoft software and equipment. This was done at two different sites on the Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center. It appears that communication sounds in the roost follow the same general pattern as seen in Tadarida brasiliensis, also a member of Molossidae. The information found in this study is a good start in beginning to recognize and understand vocalizations of M. molossus on the island of Dominica. Introduction: Not many call types of this bat species have been studied in this region. This is important given that with any animal, bat dialects vary between regions. Echolocation calls of this species in Dominica were recorded ranging from 30.70kHz to 53.65 kHz. (Biernat, et. al 2000) Distress calls of the M. molossus were also recorded and analyzed on the Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center using the same equipment during the same time period as this study (Moore, et al. 2007). Dr. M. Smotherman (2007) provided information on sounds of T. brasiliensis and Molossus. There is a member of Molossus that is known to flip their echolocation call while foraging just before the feeding buzz. There is a song pattern individual bats produce that has been recorded in the roosts of T. brasiliensis. This pattern usually starts off with an introductory syllable and always consists of alternating individual syllables and echolocation calls followed by a buzz. -
