The first rejoiced in the name of Samuel Klaus; the second answered to the more poetical appellation of Franz Stenio. The younger man was a violinist, gifted, as rumor went, with extraordinary, almost miraculous talent. Yet as he was poor and had not hitherto made a name for himself in Europe, he remained for several years in the capital of France—the heart and pulse of capricious continental fashion— unknown and unappreciated. Franz was a Styrian by birth, and, at the time of the event to be presently described, he was a young man considerably under thirty.     Raymond Durgnat and A Mirror for England robert murphy If clearly marked personal style is one’s criterion of interest, then few British films reward the concern given to such directors as, say, Dreyer, Buñuel, Franju and Renoir. But other criteria of interest exist, whereby many of the subtlest meanings behind a personal style may be related to the collective vision of a particular tradition, period, background or ‘school’. It’s logical and usual to consider even impersonal and anonymous artworks as an expression of a general consensus (A Mirror for England, p. 4).1 R ’ A Mirror for England: British Movies from Austerity to Affluence, which deals extensively with British films of the 1950s, was written in the mid-1960s and was published in 1970. Given the shifts in attitudes over the past thirty years – in society generally as well as in the little world of film studies – one might expect the judgments expressed there, the choices of what is important, to have become dated and irrelevant. If one reads Roy Armes’s A Critical History of British Cinema, which was published in 1978, one is propelled into a time warp where academics with long hair wore tank tops and flared jeans, and had posters of La Hora de los Hornos on their walls. Armes draws inspiration from a deadly cocktail of Althusserian Marxism and the languid snobbery of C. A. Lejeune to take to task an industry which ‘has never created an adequate working Raymond Durgnat died in June 2002 at the age of 69.     CLASS ACT: GOOGIE WITHERS AND JOHN MCCALLUM BRIAN MCFARLANE s I talked to the McCallums in May this year, I had to keep reminding myself that they are both in their nineties and that they’ve been in the business of entertaining us for over seventy years. Anyone who saw them in any of the films or plays in which they co-starred will know how well they Aplayed together professionally. As you watch them together now, complementing (and complimenting) each other, you can’t help wondering how much of their professional success was a spin-off from a stimulating partnership off-screen or off-stage. It seems timely to pay tribute to them for what they achieved in the performing arts in Australia and elsewhere. googie Googie Withers came to prominence in British films in the 1940s, when British cinema was enjoying its finest hours and when there was a flurry of memorable women stars. If they are not well known today, they certainly were then: Sally Gray with the eloquent voice and slightly melancholy mien; patrician Valerie Hobson; Ann Todd of the ambiguous, chiselled blonde features; Phyllis Calvert, so much smarter than the goody- goody image that was foisted on her; Margaret Lockwood, flaring her nostrils and baring her cleavage in a refined version of passion; sexy bad-girl Jean Kent getting into a lot of entertaining trouble; and Anna Neagle being so ladylike that you wanted her to slip 103 04_Essays.indd 103 29/7/09 3:36:53 PM on a banana skin.     ‘A British Empire of Their Own? Jewish Entrepreneurs in the British Film Industry’ Andrew Spicer (University of the West of England) Introduction The importance of Jewish entrepreneurs in the development of Hollywood has long been recognized, notably in Neil Gabler’s classic study, An Empire of Their Own (1988). No comparable investigation and analysis of the Jewish presence in the British film industry has been conducted.1 This article provides a preliminary overview of the most significant Jewish entrepreneurs involved in British film culture from the early pioneers through to David Puttnam. I use the term ‘entrepreneur’ rather than ‘film-maker’ because I am analyzing film as an industry, thus excluding technical personnel, including directors.2 Space restrictions have meant the reluctant omission of Sidney Bernstein and Oscar Deutsch because the latter was engaged solely in cinema building and the former more significant in the development of commercial television.3 I have also confined myself to Jews born in the UK, thus excluding the Danziger brothers, Filippo del Giudice, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, Alexander Korda, Harry Saltzman and Max Schach.4 I should emphasize that my aim is to characterize the nature of the contribution of my chosen figures to the development of British cinema, not provide detailed career profiles.5 The idea that Jews controlled the British film industry surfaced most noticeably in the late 1930s when the undercurrent of anti-Semitic prejudice in British society took public forms; Isidore Ostrer, head of the giant Gaumont-British Picture Corporation (GBPC) was referred to in the House of Commons as an ‘unnaturalised alien’ (Low 1985: 243).
