Both opponents went on to win the national title after eliminating the Tigers. at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament and narrowly missed an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III postseason. Still motivated by coming up short in those hard-fought matches, the Tigers enter the 2010 season with just one goal – Beat the Best. Leading the Tigers’ returnees are a pair of second team all-SCAC senior players in setter On paper, CC appears to have all the ingredients to do just that – a starting lineup that returns intact, 13 players with at least one Ali Smith and middle hitter Kristen Chynoweth. year of experience, a balanced attack featuring a trio of All-America and an all-conference performers, and defense that held its opponents to a .116 attack percentage in 2009. Smith averaged 9.7 assists per set and her 1,248 on the season were the fifth-highest CC features senior middle blocker Emily Perkins, who earned first-team All-America honors last season and is a legitimate national player-of-the-year candidate in 2010. The Plano, Texas, native is a three-year starter and already ranks among the program’s top single-season total in school history. She also ranks fifth in school history with 2,878 career five in every statistical category with the exception of assists. assists.

Perkins became only the third player in the 31-year history of the program to record 400 or more kills and digs during the same season, and is the first middle blocker to record that achievement. Chynoweth paced the Tigers with 132 blocks and a .951 serve percentage and is the top returner with 2.4 kills per set. The Tigers also have a pair of honorable-mention All-Americans returning in junior opposite hitter Meredith Ballard and junior setter Amy Schornack. Ballard, a second-team all-SCAC selection, paced the team with a .295 hitting percentage and was second averaging 2.41 kills Senior defensive specialist Madison Hoenig returns as the Tigers’ digs leader from last year and 2.69 points per set. She also was third in blocks at 0.50 per set. Schornack became the sixth player in school history to record 1,000 or more assists in a single season despite playing in a 6-2 offense for the first 17 matches. The third-team all-conference with 4.7 per set, while junior opposite Kylee Lehrman is back after serving a school-record selection also ranked second with 39 service aces and fourth with 318 digs. 88 aces. Lehrman also averaged 3.2 digs per set last year.

Erika Pirotte also earned a spot on the all-SCAC third team, but that doesn’t begin to adequately describe her value to the team. The three-year starter contributes in all facets of the game and already ranks among CC’s career leaders in digs and total blocks. Junior middle hitter Paige Thompson was second last year with 81 total blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Katie Petrovich is second among returning players with 2.1 kills On the left side, the Tigers have emerging stars in junior Sarah Schmoker and sophomore Laura Goldsmith. per set. Goldsmith led the team at 3.79 digs and 0.42 aces per set, and was fourth at 2.04 kills. The Tigers face a difficult schedule with six matches against teams ranked in the top 25 in The Tigers have another offensive weapon in senior Kate Weig, a defensive specialist who tied for third with a career-high 32 the American Volleyball Coaches Association Preseason Division III poll. Juniata and seventh-ranked Carthage. Providing experience and depth on the front row are senior setter Colleen Keresey, junior middle blocker Haley Hamilton and sophomore opposite hitter Kate Squires.

Keresey and Squires were starters when the Tigers ran a 6-2 offense early in the season. Hamilton more than doubled her statistical output during her second season and her continued improvement may provide an opportunity to move players throughout the lineup.

Also returning is Brianna Sallee, who missed the entire 2009 campaign due to an injury suffered during pre-season training. The team’s maturity will be especially important during the SCAC schedule as Colorado College plays every conference match on the road. That experience should pay dividends during the postseason tournaments.

“We’ll be used to playing on the road and be battle tested going into the postseason,” said head coach Rick Swan. “This team is used to traveling, playing on the road and bouncing from one time zone to another. It’s never easy, but they’ve been through it.

“Winning the SCAC regular season and tournament titles are great lead-up goals to what we really want. Our motivation is to get back to the Elite 8 and see if we can do even better. We want to beat the best.” PAGE 16 - 2010 SCAC VOLLEYBALL PROSPECTUS PAGE 17 - 2010 SCAC VOLLEYBALL PROSPECTUS

Freshmen Tarver Shimek and Hannah Brown, along with newcomer Southwestern comes into the 2010 season as the reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference sophomore Lydia Day, join seven upperclassmen, none of whom are seniors, in making up the 2010 edition of Tiger (SCAC) champions after going 35-4 including an SU record 30 match win streak. Despite having volleyball. just one senior on the team they are a very experienced group.

Juniors Blair Barrows, Liz Boddiford, Adrienne Borchardt, and Kim Conkell, along with sophomores Erin Brahm and Callie Sims all return for the Tigers after being significant contributors last year. “Our veteran leadership will pace our offense,” said head coach and 2009 South Region Coach of the Year Hannah Long. “They are who we will look towards to defend our SCAC title.” Barrows returns at libero for the Tigers after racking up 148 digs in 2009. Cortese expects that Boddiford, Borchadt, and Sims will all see time at outside hitter this year. Boddiford led the Tigers with 176 kills and recorded six total blocks Among the returnees are juniors, setter Christina Nicholls and middle blocker Lindsay Thompson, in ‘09, while Borchardt recorded 241 digs, more than any other Tiger. Sims added 18 kills and was third on the team who were SCAC First Team All-Conference, AVCA All-South Region First Team, and AVCA All- with 18 assists last year. They’ll be joined by newcomer Lydia Day, a 5’7 outside hitter from The Plains, Va. American Honorable Mention selections. Conkell returns at middle blocker and Brahm at setter for Coach Cortese and the Tigers. Brahm averaged 4.49 assists per game in 2009 after recording 462 assists total as the Tigers main setter. At middle blocker, Conkell contributed six Nicholls started all 39 matches last season and was instrumental in the diverse offensive attack of total blocks and 46 kills in ‘09. She’ll be joined in the middle by 5’11 freshman Tarver Shimek. the Pirates, recording 1428 assists at 10.5 per set, with just 45 ball handling errors. She recorded 33 aces on the year and was second on the team in digs with 393. Despite the youthfulness of her team, Cortese is confident that the Tigers will be able to step up to the challenge in 2010. And while Cortese is expecting the four juniors to lead the squad, she has been surprised by the effort of the underclassmen: Thompson was a consistently effective attacker for SU in 2010, playing all 39 matches and led in kill percentage at .338. She recorded 393 kills at just over three per set, both second on the team. “Everyone has really stepped up so far to be leaders both on and off the court. There are four juniors who have really bought into the program and have worked very hard to welcome the newcomers to the team. Since the team is so small Also returning for the Pirates is senior Lauren Brown who missed the 2009 season thanks to an and young, the underclassmen are really given a big role on and off the court. Overall, I’m impressed with the attitude and determination that I see everyday in practice.” early injury. In 2008, Brown was third on the team in kills/set with 2.68 and second with a .279 kill percentage and will add another strong hitter to the front row. In a year where three SCAC teams are ranked in the AVCA Preseason Top 25, Cortese and the Tigers will be challenged early and often. The team will only host five home matches in 2010, four of which are conference games, Southwestern welcomes one of the largest newcomer classes to the mix to make this one of the so the ability to play on the road will be key. The Tigers open up the season on Sept. 1 when they travel to Maryville deepest teams the Pirates have put on the court. College to take on the Scots at 6:00 p.m. EST.

The Tigers will open up conference play with a rigorous weekend of matches on Sept. 25 and 26, as they play host to “We brought in a lot of talented players who will see playing time in their first season with our team,” four different SCAC opponents.
