GREATER FLINT AREA SPORTS HALL OF FAME 33rd ANNUAL INDUCTION BANQUET

President Phil Pierson 2012 Board Welcome to tonight’s Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame program. Tonight marks the 33rd year of of Directors this extraordinary organization and the end of my two-year term as president. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with this impressive group of people. Phil Pierson The intent of this organization is to preserve the rich heritage of Flint area athletics, and it is a task President carried out entirely by volunteers. Tonight we recall the accomplishments of individuals and teams Bill Haley who have been a part of this great tradition and singled out for recognition. 1st Vice President As in past years, tonight’s induction is special to me. I had the privilege of watching many Flint Jim Vukovich athletics from the front row as a member of the sports department of The Flint Journal and again as they have been inducted into our Hall of Fame. I’ve watched countless athletes from our area, and 2nd Vice President tonight’s inductees are some of the best. Bill Basilius The individual inductees honored tonight are Lamarr Edwards, Bill Frieder, Jim Massar, Jack Seltzer, Treasurer Bob Stallcup, and Lee Johnson. Collectively, they are one of the most outstanding classes to receive the Hall of Fame distinction. Bob Root Executive Secretary Tonight we also pay special tribute to a man whose contributions to sports in Genesee County are immeasurable. Bernie Borden’s sponsorships have helped over a hundred teams and thousands of Dean Yeotis athletes in the greater Flint area. He will now have his own plaque on the Hall of Fame wall as this Recording Secretary year’s recipient of the Special Service Award.

The teams we honor tonight are also exceptional. The 1982 Centilli and Grossi Connie Mack Baseball Duncan Beagle Team, 1947 Dye Football Team, and 2007 & 2008 Mott Basketball Teams raised the standard of Bob Burek excellence to new heights. Sue Calvo The Board of Directors wishes to express its appreciation to The Flint Journal for its continued support Craig Coney of tonight’s program. We thank The Journal for donating the Hall of Fame plaques you see on display, Marty Crane and for its help in publicizing the activities through its sports department. Roger Foutch Tom Healey Ben Roof and A-Frame Awards have also been vital on behalf of the GFASHOF for many years. Their continued support is greatly appreciated. Len Jasinski Gerald Moore A big “thank you” also goes to Genesys Conference and Banquet Center and the Genesys Athletic Bill Troesken Club for their extraordinary efforts in hosting the program and in providing a permanent home for the Hall of Fame plaques. Bill Trosko Mike Vance On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Selection Committee, I wish everyone a great evening as we again celebrate the athletic excellence that has made us unique. This year, the Board of Directors has voted to accord EMERITUS status to JOAN LeVEQUE and ERNIE MYERS. Their extraordinary leadership, in a variety of capacities, has enabled the organization to successfully continue the mission of honoring participants for their outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of athletics.

MRS. LeVEQUE became a member of the Board of Directors in 1988 and served officially until 2001. Joan LeVeque Ernie Myers During that extended period, she was Vice President for three years, President for two years and Chairperson of the Selection Committee for a three-year period of time. Mrs. LeVeque continues to serve in preparing several of the voting ballots for the Board Research Committee.

MR. MYERS was a charter member of the Board of Directors serving from 1980 through 1992. Mr. Myers initiated the formation of the GFASHOF while serving as a member of the Mott Community College Bruin Club. During his twelve years of service Mr. Myers was Vice President in 1980 and 1981 and President of the Board of Directors in 1982 and 1983.

EMERITUS status is granted to former members of the GFASHOF Board of Directors recognizing their active participation and contributions in the activities and leadership of the organization that exceed what may be considered normal and traditional.

This past year, the Board of Directors honored five former members for their meritorious service during their years with the Hall of Fame. The five former members receivingEMERITUS recognition included: DICK DALY, JIM MASSAR, JIM RUTHERFORD, CATHY SNYDER and TOM YEOTIS.

Initially, as noted, five individuals were selected and each year thereafter two may be chosen. Formal recognition will be held each year at the GFASHOF Press Party held in October. All of the names of the EMERITUS selections will be permanently listed in the annual souvenir banquet booklet and on the GFASHOF website (www.GFASHOF.org).

GREATER FLINT AREA SPORTS HALL OF FAME - 2012 - PAGE 6 Grand Blanc coach Bob Stallcup’s high standards earned him spot in Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame By Josh Gordon | MLive.com GRAND BLANC, MI -- It wasn’t uncommon for Bob Stallcup to be sitting in his Holly home on a Sunday morning and see a familiar teenage face showing up in his driveway looking for a hot breakfast and a ride home. If it was later in the afternoon, the teenager may ask for an ice cream cone instead, but still expect the ride home. For Stallcup, who served as the Grand Blanc boys cross- country coach for 28 years, the boys track coach for 24 years and the girls cross-country coach for six years, the chance to compete with the best meant you had to go above and beyond when others didn’t. That’s what he preached to his runners and that is what his runners took to heart. So, when one of his runners ran the roughly 10 miles from Grand Blanc to his house, the least he could do was offer some food and a ride home for being committed to succeeding even if that meant running on one of their few days off. said. “He was a teacher at the high school and he believed It was constant high standards that helped Stallcup lead kids could be good students and good people and those the Bobcats boys cross-country squad to state titles in 1977 where the type of guys he wanted on his team because those and 1979 as well as second-place finishes in 1976, 1978 and were the types of guys who would come through and well 1983. By Ross Maghielse | MLive.com FLINT, MI – Jack Seltzer’s list of career accolades and accomplishments reads like the credits after a movie. The 61-year-old golf professional is indeed well decorated, and has a spot in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame and a long PGA resume to prove it. Yet, for all Seltzer has accomplished, his latest honor holds special standing above the rest. Seltzer is one of 10 inductees going into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame for the class of 2012. “There’s no question this will stand out,” said Seltzer, a Flint native and current Linden resident. “It’s extra special because of it being here in Flint. That’s the big thing. It’s the hometown Hall of Fame.” Seltzer has lived in the Flint area for the majority of his life. He knows the city’s sports history and is honored to be considered one of its greats. “I grew up in Flint, the actual city of Flint,” Seltzer said. “The Hall of Fame here is obviously quite an honor and there are a lot of great athletes in there. GREATER FLINT AREA SPORTS HALL OF FAME - 2012 - PAGE 70 ‘NINE LIVES’ KEPT SCOTT ALDRED IN BASEBALL By Dan Nilsen Scott Aldred didn’t beat everybody in his major league pitching career, but the Montrose native beat back one injury after another to keep himself in the game. The 6-foot-4 left-hander gutted out 19 seasons of professional ball despite elbow, shoulder, hip and foot injuries that involved three operations, including Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. And when the elbow  ared up again in 2004,  nally forcing him off the mound, Aldred stayed in the game as a pitching coach in the farm system. His 20-39 career record won’t get him into Cooperstown, but his nine years of major league service with six teams has whisked him into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame. He’ll be formally enshrined at a banquet Dec. 5 at Genesys Health Club. “All left-handers seem to have nine lives in their career, and with me it was no exception,” Aldred said. “I played with a lot of teams. They’re always looking for left-handed pitching.” Aldred was a hot left-handed prospect when the drafted him out of Montrose High in June 1986. In 2011, the GFASHOF Board reached out to the area athletic community with an initiative: Genesys Athletic Club/GFASHOF Collaboration In concert with the Genesys Athletic Club, the Hall of Fame Board established a Saturday symposium for high school athletes. The first of what is to be three programs reached 80 students from ten area high schools with a program on proper training and nutrition. Genesys and MSU trainers worked with the student athletes in a 3 hour session at the Genesys Athletic Club. Mott Community coach, Steve Schmidt, keynoted the program. Four Hall of Fame inductees, including Keith Young, Sue Reber, Courtney Hawkins, and Roy Hall served as mentors to the athletes and spoke to them on the commitment necessary to get to greatness and to their responsibility to give back to the community. The second and third programs will focus on substance abuse and community service, respectively. It is expected that athletes will take program contents back to their peers.
