On Sunday, one of them will emerge as a first-time ATP Tour singles champion, and at an ATP 500-level tournament to boot. • 18-year-old Auger-Aliassime received a wild card into the event, and caused a sensation right off the bat by eliminating No. 2 seed and World No. 16 Fabio Fognini in the first round, for the Canadian’s biggest career win by ranking. Auger-Aliassime continued to impress, beating Christian Garin in the second round, one week after he had lost to the Chilean at Buenos Aires. He did not flinch in his first-ever ATP Tour semi-final on Saturday, outlasting 2016 Rio Open champion Pablo Cuevas in three sets to reach his debut ATP Tour final, and becoming the youngest ATP 500 finalist since that tournament level was established in 2009. If Auger-Aliassime wins the final, he will become the youngest ATP Tour singles titlist since Kei Nishikori won at Delray Beach in 2008. Win or lose, Auger-Aliassime is projected to move inside the Top 60 for the first time after his Rio run. • Djere knocked out the other Top 2 seed in his first-round match, defeating No. 1 seed and 2017 Rio champion Dominic Thiem to garner his first-ever victory over a Top 10 player. The Serbian went on to make the fourth ATP Tour semi-final of his career, where he received a walkover from an injured Aljaz Bedene that sent Djere into the first ATP Tour singles final of his career. 23-year-old Djere will come close to a Top 50 debut with a runner-up showing and will make a Top 40 debut with the title. He leads the event in percentage of first-serve return points won (46 of 110, 41%). The four unseeded semi-finalists also happen to be the four players who ousted the Top 4 seeds in the opening round. • The first semi-final pits Laslo Djere against Aljaz Bedene. Djere got his first-ever Top 10 win over No. 1 seed Dominic Thiem in the first round, and progressed all the way to his fourth career ATP Tour semi-final. The Serbian is still seeking his first singles final. Bedene beat Buenos Aires titlist and No. 3 seed Marco Cecchinato in his first match, and he aims to make his first ATP Tour final since Buenos Aires just over one year ago, as he seeks a first-ever title. Bedene has won their two prior Tour-level tilts, but he needed a final-set tiebreak in their last meeting at Moscow last year. • The second semi-final finds 2016 champion Cuevas against 18-year-old wild card Felix Auger- Aliassime. In the first round, Cuevas was up 6-1 4-1 on defending champion and No. 4 seed Diego Schwartzman when the Argentine had to retire due to a leg injury. Cuevas moved from there into the final four, improving to a stellar 8-2 on the Golden Swing this year. He will now face #NextGenATP contender Auger-Aliassime, who took out No. 2 seed Fabio Fognini in the opening round and continued into his first-ever ATP Tour semi-final. It will be the first meeting between Cuevas and Auger-Aliassime. • The doubles final will also take place on Saturday, and the fans will have an all-Brazilian team to support in the final. The wild card duo of Thomaz Bellucci and Rogerio Dutra Silva upset No. 1- seeded compatriots Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares en route to the final in their homeland. They will meet Maximo Gonzalez and Nicolas Jarry, who upset No. 2 seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the semi-finals. Gonzalez and Jarry have made at least the round of 16 at the last four Grand Slam events. Gonzalez has also made every final in the 2019 Golden Swing so far.
