AUGER-ALIASSIME, DJERE MEET IN CLASH OF FIRST-TIME FINALISTS IN RIO

• Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada and Laslo Djere of Serbia both made their tournament debuts at the Rio Open presented by Claro this year, and both were rewarded for that choice, as they each reached the first ATP Tour singles finals of their respective careers. On Sunday, one of them will emerge as a first-time ATP Tour singles champion, and at an ATP 500-level tournament to boot.

• 18-year-old Auger-Aliassime received a wild card into the event, and caused a sensation right off the bat by eliminating No. 2 seed and World No. 16 in the first round, for the Canadian’s biggest career win by ranking. Auger-Aliassime continued to impress, beating Christian Garin in the second round, one week after he had lost to the Chilean at . He did not flinch in his first-ever ATP Tour semi-final on Saturday, outlasting champion in three sets to reach his debut ATP Tour final, and becoming the youngest ATP 500 finalist since that tournament level was established in 2009. If Auger-Aliassime wins the final, he will become the youngest ATP Tour singles titlist since won at Delray Beach in 2008. Win or lose, Auger-Aliassime is projected to move inside the Top 60 for the first time after his Rio run.

• Djere knocked out the other Top 2 seed in his first-round match, defeating No. 1 seed and 2017 Rio champion to garner his first-ever victory over a Top 10 player. The Serbian went on to make the fourth ATP Tour semi-final of his career, where he received a walkover from an injured Aljaz Bedene that sent Djere into the first ATP Tour singles final of his career. 23-year-old Djere will come close to a Top 50 debut with a runner-up showing and will make a Top 40 debut with the title. He leads the event in percentage of first-serve return points won (46 of 110, 41%).

CUEVAS LAST FORMER CHAMP, SOUSA LAST SEED STANDING IN RIO

• Only one former champion and one seeded player are still active in the Rio Open presented by Claro singles draw, and both will try to make the quarter-finals at Rio on Thursday when 2016 titlist Pablo Cuevas and No. 5 seed Joao Sousa contest their second-round matches.

• In an opening-round match between former champions that spanned two days, it was Cuevas who advanced when defending champion Diego Schwartzman retired due to a right leg injury. Cuevas will try to improve his excellent 11-4 win-loss record in Rio even further when he meets on Thursday. Londero had the biggest breakthrough of the 2019 Golden Swing when he won his first five Tour-level matches to clinch his first ATP Tour singles title at Cordoba.

• Schwartzman’s retirement also meant that only one seed progressed beyond the first round, and it is Sousa who is the sole survivor from the seeded list. The Portuguese No. 1 will try to keep his quest for a fourth career title alive when he meets qualifier Casper Ruud on Thursday. Ruud had his breakthrough event in Rio two years ago, making the semi-finals as a 208th-ranked wild card.

and Albert Ramos-Vinolas will face off in another second-round match; both players snapped 5-match Tour-level losing streaks with wins at Cordoba earlier this month. Also meeting on Thursday are Laslo Djere and ; Djere garnered the first Top 10 victory of his career on Tuesday when he knocked 2017 Rio champion Dominic Thiem out of the event.

• The first round will come to an end and the second round will kick off on Wednesday at the Rio Open presented by Claro, as the tournament is back on track after a near-total rainout on Monday. Previous Rio champions Diego Schwartzman and Pablo Cuevas will complete their interrupted first-round clash, and all three wild cards, including two Brazilians, will compete on Wednesday.

• Defending champion Schwartzman and 2016 titlist Cuevas had their first-round match interrupted by rain with Cuevas leading 3-0. They have split their four prior Tour-level tilts, with Cuevas winning their most recent match at Sao Paulo in 2017. During the Golden Swing, Schwartzman reached the Buenos Aires final, while Cuevas made the Cordoba semi-finals and Buenos Aires quarter-finals.

• Brazilian wild card takes on ’s Aljaz Bedene in the second match on Quadra Guga Kuerten. Monteiro made the Rio quarter-finals in 2017, while Bedene made the same round last year. Bedene lost to Fabio Fognini in each of his three previous appearances at Rio.

• Another wild card follows on the center court, as Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime has a rematch against Christian Garin. Auger-Aliassime was also a wild card at Buenos Aires last week, where he lost in the first round to Garin, who came back from a set down to get the win. Auger-Aliassime rebounded on Tuesday with a first-round upset of Fognini for his biggest career win by ranking.

• The third wild card, of Brazil, also had his first-round match suspended on Tuesday, while trailing Japan’s Taro Daniel 1-4 in the third set. The other courts also have second- round matches between and Jaume Munar, and Roberto Carballes Baena and Hugo Dellien. Dellien is the first Bolivian to win an ATP Tour or Grand Slam match since 1984.

ALL FIRST-ROUND MATCHES HIT THE COURTS ON TUESDAY IN RIO

• At the Rio Open presented by Claro, rain prevented any matches on Monday’s slate from being completed, which means all 16 first-round singles matches will take place on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro. Defending champion Diego Schwartzman, previous titlists Dominic Thiem and Pablo Cuevas, and Top 20-ranked Italians Fabio Fognini and Marco Cecchinato will all hit the courts.

• Last year’s victor Schwartzman and 2016 champion Cuevas face off right away in the first round. They have split their four prior Tour-level tilts, with Cuevas winning their most recent match at Sao Paulo in 2017. Both have had strong Golden Swings: Schwartzman made the Buenos Aires final last week, while Cuevas reached the semi-finals at Cordoba and the quarter-finals at Buenos Aires.

• Joining Schwartzman and Cuevas in the night session on Quadra Guga Kuerten is the other former titlist in the field, top seed Thiem, who won the Rio Open title in 2017. Thiem will face Laslo Djere in the first round, in Thiem’s first match since Schwartzman spoiled his undefeated (11-0) Buenos Aires record in their semi-final encounter on Saturday. This will be Thiem and Djere’s first meeting.

• No. 8 seed Nicolas Jarry and Roberto Carballes Baena will resume their suspended match on Quadra Guga Kuerten, with Carballes Baena leading 4-3. Prior to that resumption, No. 5 seed Joao Sousa of Portugal will meet Cordoba finalist on the center court; they have split their two previous meetings. Joao Sousa’s compatriot will play Brazilian wild card Thiago Monteiro later on that court; 30-year-old Pedro Sousa made his Top 100 debut two weeks ago.

• World No. 16 Fognini and World No. 17 Cecchinato will start their Rio Open campaigns on Quadra 1. The Italians have had opposing fortunes during the 2019 Golden Swing thus far: Cecchinato, who faces Aljaz Bedene, won the Buenos Aires title on Sunday, while Fognini, who meets 18-year- old wild card Felix Auger-Aliassime, is 0-2 on the Latin American clay courts so far this season.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN RIO DE JANEIRO

1) Golden Hour: The month-long “Golden Swing” continues through , with the Rio Open presented by Claro as the third stop, and the first 500-level clay-court event of the year. Defending champion Diego Schwartzman and 2017 titlist Dominic Thiem are two of the Top 4 seeds, with Italians Fabio Fognini and Buenos Aires winner Marco Cecchinato rounding out the top quartet.

2) Winning Thiem: Thiem comes into Rio as the No. 1 seed and World No. 8, aiming to reclaim the title he won in 2017, having lost to in last year’s quarter-finals. The Austrian, who reached his first Grand Slam final on the red clay of Roland Garros last year, has a 10-2 record overall at the Rio Open, including a semi-final showing in his first appearance in 2016.

3) Fog Rolling In: No. 2 seed Fognini has had a slow start to the Golden Swing, as the World No. 16 lost his opening-round matches at Cordoba and Buenos Aires to Aljaz Bedene and Jaume Munar respectively. But the top-ranked Italian has had some of his finest results at Rio, notably defeating in the 2015 semi-finals en route to his career-best finalist showing at the tournament.

4) Turn It Around: No. 3 seed Cecchinato is 0-4 in main-draw matches at the Rio Open, having fallen in the first round in each of the last four editions. However, the No. 2 Italian had a similar 0-3 win- loss record at Buenos Aires going into that event last week, and he ended up hoisting the champion’s trophy. Cecchinato has been rewarded with a new career-high ranking of No. 17.

5) The Champ Returns: Schwartzman won his second career title, and first at ATP 500-level, with his run to the Rio trophy last year. He has yet to win a title since then, but he clinched a finalist showing last week in his hometown of Buenos Aires, before falling to Cecchinato. Schwartzman also made the doubles final in Buenos Aires, partnering Thiem, who he had beaten in the singles semi-finals.

6) Growing Seeds: Joao Sousa, Dusan Lajovic, Malek Jaziri, and Nicolas Jarry occupy the other four seeded positions this week, just as they did last week in Buenos Aires. Each of the four players listed have yet to make a quarter-final during the Golden Swing so far this season.

7) Surprise, Surprise: One player who has had a stellar Golden Swing is Juan Ignacio Londero, who won his first five Tour-level matches at Cordoba as a wild card, clinching his maiden ATP Tour singles title in the process. Londero made it through qualifying to grab a main draw spot at Rio.

8) Title Taker: 2016 champion Pablo Cuevas is the third former Rio titlist to feature in this week’s field. The Uruguayan has won six ATP Tour singles titles, all on clay, and four of the six have come in Brazil. Cuevas has won three times in Sao Paulo to go alongside his lone Rio Open title.

9) Going Wild: Two 18-year-olds were given wild cards this week, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada and the aptly-named Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil. They also happen to be two of the most recent US Open boys’ singles champions: Auger-Aliassime won the title in 2016, and Seyboth Wild claimed it last year. The third wild card went to Thiago Monteiro, a 2017 Rio Open quarter-finalist.

10) Double Duty: Brazilian doubles stars Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares are teaming up for the first time at an ATP Tour event since 2016 Stockholm. Former World No. 1 Melo has won 32 ATP Tour doubles titles and former World No. 2 Soares has won 30, but neither player has ever lifted the Rio title. Melo made the 2014 final. Soares has lost in the semi-finals in each of the event’s 5 editions.
