Shashika Kumudumali Guruge Board of Study in Plant Sciences Water lilies are aquatic herbs with perennial rhizomes or rootstocks anchored in the mud. In Sri Lanka, they are represented by the genus Nymphaea L. It has two species, N. nouchali Burm. F. and N. pubescens Willd (Dassanayake and Clayton, 1996). Water-lilies have been popular as an ornamental aquatic plant in Sri Lanka from ancient times as they produce striking flowers throughout the year. In addition to these native water-lilies, few ornamental species are also been introduced in the past into the water bodies. Nymphaea nouchali (Synonym- N. stellata) N. nouchali has three colour variations, white, pink and violet blue. They are commonly known as “Manel”. According to the field observations pink flowered Nymphaea is not wide spread like others. Blue and white Nymphaea are widely spread mainly in dry zone, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and also in Jaffna, Ampara, Chilaw and Kurunegala. Among these, pale blue flower Nymphaea or “Nil Manel” is considered as the National flower of Sri Lanka. Figure 01. College, Dibrugarh - 786 001 (Assam), India. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Changes in botanical names of flowering plants are an issue which comes up from time to time. While there are valid scientific reasons for such changes, it also creates some difficulties to the floristic workers in the preparation of a new flora. Further, all the important monumental floras of the world have most of the plants included in their old names, which are now regarded as synonyms. In north east India, “Flora of Assam” is an important flora as it includes result of pioneering floristic work on Angiosperms & Gymnosperms in the region. But, in the study of this flora, the same problems of name changes appear before the new researchers. Therefore, an attempt is made here to prepare an updated account of the new names against their old counterpts of the plants included in the first two volumes of the flora, on the basis of recent standard taxonomic literatures. In this, the unresolved & controversial names are not touched & only the confirmed ones are taken into account. In the process new names of 470 (four hundred & seventy) dicotyledonous plant species included in the concerned flora are found out. The Birds of the Dar Es Salaam Area, Tanzania

Howell INTRODUCTION Although the birds of other areas in Tanzania have been studied in detail, those of the coast near Dar es Salaam have received relatively little recent attention. Ruggles-Brise (1927) published a popular account of some species from Dar es Salaam, and Fuggles-Couchman (1939,1951, 1953, 1954, 1962) included the area in a series of papers of a wider scope. More recently there have been a few other stu dies dealing with particular localities (Gardiner and Gardiner 1971), habitats (Stuart and van der Willigen 1979; Howell 1981), or with individual species or groups (Harvey 1971–1975; Howell 1973, 1977). Britton (1978, 1981) has docu mented specimens collected in the area previous to 1967 by Anderson and others. The purpose of this paper is to draw together data from published reports, unpu blished records, museum specimens and our own observations on the frequency, habitat, distribution and breeding of the birds of the Dar es Salaam area, here defi ned as the portion of the mainland within a 64-km radius of Dar es Salaam, inclu ding the small islands just offshore (Fig. 1). It includes Dar es Salaam District and portions of two others, Kisarawe and Bagamoyo. Zanzibar has been omitted because its unusual avifauna has been reviewed (Pakenham 1979). Most of the mainland areas are readily accessible from Dar es Salaam by road and the small islands may be reached by boat. The geography of the area is described in Sutton (1970). -

ABSTRACT BEAVER (CASTOR CANADENSIS) ELECTIVITY FOR AMUR HONEYSUCKLE (LONICERA MAACKII) COMPARED TO OTHER WOODY SPECIES by Janet L. Deardorff The North American beaver is a keystone riparian obligate which creates and maintains riparian areas by building dams. In much of the eastern U.S., invasive shrubs are common in riparian zones, but we do not know if beavers promote or inhibit these invasions. I investigated whether beavers use the invasive shrub, Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii), preferentially compared to other woody species and the causes of differences in L. maackii electivity among sites. At eight sites, I identified woody stems on transects, recording stem diameter, distance to the water’s edge, and whether the stem was cut by beaver. To determine predictors of cutting by beaver, I conducted binomial generalized regressions, using distance from the water’s edge, diameter, and plant genus as fixed factors and site as a random factor. To quantify beaver preference, I calculated an electivity index (Ei) for each genus at each site. Lonicera maackii was only preferred at two of the eight sites though it comprised 41% of the total cut stems. Stems that were closer to the water’s edge and with a smaller diameter had a higher probability of being cut. Among sites, L. maackii electivity was negatively associated with the density of stems of preferred genera. Received: 04 Sept. 2017 / Accepted: 19 Oct. 2017 / Publication date: 27 Nov. 2017 ABSTRACT Nymphaea nilotica Fawzi & Azer sp. nov. is illustrated and described as a new species to science. N. nilotica is related to N. mexicana Zucc. It differs from N. mexicana by the following characters: petals 30-32, carpels 13-14 and stamens about 98. N. nilotica is a rhizomatous perennial aquatic herb. It colonizes in the shallows of slow streams from a several localities in Nile region beside Waraq Island in Giza governorate. Morphological and anatomical features, distribution map, and notes on ecology of the new species are given. A key is provided to differentiate among species of Nymphaea in Egypt. Key words: Nymphaea nilotica, Nymphaeaceae, taxonomy, morphological and anatomical characters. Introduction The family Nymphaeaceae is comprised of six genera namely: Nymphaea, Nuphar, Victoria, Euryale, Baraclaya (Hydrostemma), Ondinea (Slocum, 2005; Christenhusz and Byng, 2016). The genus Nymphaea (water lily) is the largest genus of Nymphaeaceae, with approximately 50 species occurs almost worldwide (Borsch, et al., 2007). Nymphaea species are highly phenotypically plastic and possibly hybridize. This situation is clarified by the occurrence of many garden cultivars of hybrid origin (Slocum, 2005). Moreover, Volkova and Shipunov (2007) mentioned that, many Nymphaea species have numerous subspecies, chromosomal races, and forms of hybrid and artificial origin. -

OPEN Citation: Horticulture Research (2017) 4, 17051; doi:10.1038/hortres.2017.51 www.nature.com/hortres REVIEW ARTICLE Water lilies as emerging models for Darwin’s abominable mystery Fei Chen1, Xing Liu1, Cuiwei Yu2, Yuchu Chen2, Haibao Tang1 and Liangsheng Zhang1 Water lilies are not only highly favored aquatic ornamental plants with cultural and economic importance but they also occupy a critical evolutionary space that is crucial for understanding the origin and early evolutionary trajectory of flowering plants. The birth and rapid radiation of flowering plants has interested many scientists and was considered ‘an abominable mystery’ by Charles Darwin. In searching for the angiosperm evolutionary origin and its underlying mechanisms, the genome of Amborella has shed some light on the molecular features of one of the basal angiosperm lineages; however, little is known regarding the genetics and genomics of another basal angiosperm lineage, namely, the water lily. In this study, we reviewed current molecular research and note that water lily research has entered the genomic era. We propose that the genome of the water lily is critical for studying the contentious relationship of basal angiosperms and Darwin’s ‘abominable mystery’. Four pantropical water lilies, especially the recently sequenced Nymphaea colorata, have characteristics such as small size, rapid growth rate and numerous seeds and can act as the best model for understanding the origin of angiosperms. The water lily genome is also valuable for revealing the genetics of ornamental traits and will largely accelerate the molecular breeding of water lilies. The different plant parts of the species belonging to Nymphaea are consumed as food in different countries globally. This review focuses on the genus Nymphaea and provides updated information on its botanical description, ethnopharmacology, pharmacognosy, phytoconstituents and its pharmacological aspects in health benefits. The detailed profiling of phytoconstituents from Nymphaea showed the structural diversity of unique and novel biochemical moiety that may provide a rich source of lead molecules for combating the human diseases in health benefits. In addition the compiled data will provide a way for the researchers to unlock the different targeted molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of various oxidative stress mediated diseases.
