  • An Intelligent Technique to Customise Music Programmes for Their Audience
Poolcasting: an intelligent technique to customise music programmes for their audience Claudio Baccigalupo Tesi doctoral del progama de Doctorat en Informatica` Institut d’Investigacio¶ en Intel·ligencia` Artificial (IIIA-CSIC) Dirigit per Enric Plaza Departament de Ciencies` de la Computacio¶ Universitat Autonoma` de Barcelona Bellaterra, novembre de 2009 Abstract Poolcasting is an intelligent technique to customise musical se- quences for groups of listeners. Poolcasting acts like a disc jockey, determining and delivering songs that satisfy its audience. Satisfying an entire audience is not an easy task, especially when members of the group have heterogeneous preferences and can join and leave the group at different times. The approach of poolcasting consists in selecting songs iteratively, in real time, favouring those members who are less satisfied by the previous songs played. Poolcasting additionally ensures that the played sequence does not repeat the same songs or artists closely and that pairs of consecutive songs ‘flow’ well one after the other, in a musical sense. Good disc jockeys know from expertise which songs sound well in sequence; poolcasting obtains this knowledge from the analysis of playlists shared on the Web. The more two songs occur closely in playlists, the more poolcasting considers two songs as associated, in accordance with the human experiences expressed through playlists. Combining this knowl- edge and the music profiles of the listeners, poolcasting autonomously generates sequences that are varied, musically smooth and fairly adapted for a particular audience. A natural application for poolcasting is automating radio pro- grammes. Many online radios broadcast on each channel a random sequence of songs that is not affected by who is listening.

  • Raw Thought: the Weblog of Aaron Swartz Aaronsw.Com/Weblog
Raw Thought: The Weblog of Aaron Swartz aaronsw.com/weblog 1 What’s Going On Here? May 15, 2005 Original link I’m adding this post not through blogging software, like I normally do, but by hand, right into the webpage. It feels odd. I’m doing this because a week or so ago my web server started making funny error messages and not working so well. The web server is in Chicago and I am in California so it took a day or two to get someone to check on it. The conclusion was the hard drive had been fried. When the weekend ended, we sent the disk to a disk repair place. They took a look at it and a couple days later said that they couldn’t do anything. The heads that normally read and write data on a hard drive by floating over the magnetized platter had crashed right into it. While the computer was giving us error messages it was also scratching away a hole in the platter. It got so thin that you could see through it. This was just in one spot on the disk, though, so we tried calling the famed Drive Savers to see if they could recover the rest. They seemed to think they wouldn’t have any better luck. (Please, plase, please, tell me if you know someplace to try.) I hadn’t backed the disk up for at least a year (in fairness, I was literally going to back it up when I found it giving off error messages) and the thought of the loss of all that data was crushing.

Woody Guthrie, 1938 While my family and the Lewises struggled to rise from the Depression’s depth in the 1930s, the United States focused inward and turned a blind eye to swirling international turmoil and geopolitics. Congress, following the electorate’s will, was determined to avoid involvement in “old world” political affairs even as Germany and Japan abrogated treaties, rearmed, threatened neutral states, and invaded neighbors. In 1939, after the fall of Poland to the German blitzkrieg and the Japa- nese invasion of Manchuria, President Roosevelt knew that America would eventually be drawn into this new conflict, but his warnings did not move a slumbering Congress or the American people.

On February 21, Cov Cath started their very own Foreign Language Week. A whole week filled with foreign country based lunches, food par- ties, and a German accordion player playing while the students ate lunch. Monday the students were off because of Presidents’ Day but on Tuesday the Spanish students brought in different Mexican dishes for the whole class to enjoy. Foods ranging from chips and salsa to churros were brought. The Spanish classes also watched movies such as Finding Nemo and Lion King in Spanish to help improve their Spanish-speaking skills. Tuesday was German day and students were served goetta sau- sages, metts, hot dogs, and German potatoes to top it off. For dessert the students got apple cobbler with a little baby doll inside since it was Fat Tuesday. Whoever found the special baby doll was awarded a free ice cream. Wednesday was Italian day and for lunch the stu- dents had spaghetti with bread sticks and a choice of Caesar or Ital- ian salad. On Thursday, the students were served burritos with chips, nacho cheese sauce, and a churro. Even though it was Mexican day, Ruth Diane by Photo a German accordion player played throughout all three mods.
