  • NSS Annual Report 2018-2019 WS
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL MCM DAV College has always had a strong vision and commitment toward the service of the society and its weaker sections. With deep sense of gratification, I take pride in the successful completion of session 2018-19 by the NSS volunteers of MCM DAV. Our NSS Units worked in and outside the campus with great enthusiasm and zeal. The main objective of their initiatives and endeavours includes promotion of modern and scientific waste management, generation of awareness among various stakeholders regarding importance of cleanliness and hygiene, and affecting behavioural change regarding sanitation practices. The special initiatives, lectures and activities undertaken in 2018-19 have served as a milestone in fostering social responsibility and nationalism among young NSS volunteers and I am confident that they, under the able guidance of their mentors, will work as torch bearers of change for the others too. While completing the glorious fifty years of MCM DAV, the session 2018-19 proves to be another landmark in making MCM DAV an institution of exaltation and excellence. The college has been ranked first in the Swachh Educational Institution of India (in the category-College Residential). The award comes as recognition of MCM's commitment to the cause of 'Swachhata' which is reflected in the slew of initiatives undertaken by it aiming at the acceleration of the pace of realization of objectives of ―Swachh Bharat‖. There are some remarkable social service activities done by the unit. For instance, vermicomposting, plantation drives, blood donation camp, generating awareness about waste segregation, installation of blue and green dustbins, cleaning of campus and surroundings by NSS volunteers, sensitization programs on sanitation, hygiene and cleanliness in adopted village Badheri.

  • Becoming Men in a Modern City: Masculinity, Migration And
© COPYRIGHT by Harjant S. Gill 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DEDICATION To my dear friend Abhishek Sharma and to Chandigarh, the city I grew up loving, where I always find myself at home. BECOMING MEN IN A MODERN CITY: MASCULINITY, MIGRATION AND GLOBALIZATION IN NORTH INDIA BY Harjant S. Gill ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the formation of contemporary Punjabi Sikh masculinity in North India. Through fifteen months of fieldwork carried out in Chandigarh, the capital city of Punjab, I look at how young Punjabi men belonging to landowning Jat Sikh families develop notions of masculinity and migration. In addition to the traditional gender norm Punjabi men are expected to follow such as getting an arranged marriage, having kids, and supporting their families, most of the men I interviewed characterized successful masculinity as the ability to migrate abroad and become transnational citizens. Over the last three decades the trend towards transnational migration has grown exponentially among Punjabi Jats. Punjabi families view migration as the quickest path to financial prosperity and middle class status. Countries with large concentrations of diasporic communities such as Canada, the United State, United Kingdom and Australia often top the list of preferred destinations for Punjabi migrants. In addition to seeking better educational and employment opportunities abroad, the Punjabi Sikh desire to leave India is partly rooted in ongoing economic and political marginalization experienced by the Punjabi Sikh community within India. iv In this dissertation, I chronicle the experiences of young Punjabi men who give up farming and move to Chandigarh to gain the language and technical training necessary to apply for a study abroad as well as skilled worker visas.

INTRODUCTION HISTORY Yves Thoraval in his book “The Cinemas of India” has given an insight of the emergence and journey of the Indian cinema and the changing trends that has taken place since its inception in 1869 to the turn of the 20th century. A comprehensive overview of the Indian cinema starting with the Pre-historic Era showcasing the emergence of the cinemas in India with the introduction of the concept of moving pictures (First reel ever shot of a real film produced by the Lumiere operator Maurice Sestier in Bombay on 7thJuly 1896).Then came the era where different genres were discovered, Silent movies were made and shown with live orchestras to the beginning of the Golden Age with the introduction of the ‘Talkies’, to the era of New Indian Cinema i.e. the rise of ‘Auteur’ Cinema and finally an overview of the Regional cinemas. Overall a compact view of the emerging trends and the reasons behind the existence of Indian Cinema. Emergence of Punjabi Culture in Bollywood As the Indian state of ‘Punjab’ faced and struggled with the complex social and economic issues, at the same time a large diaspora was settling all over the globe. Punjabi poets and storytellers of the ancient India seemed to be disappearing as the decreasing water levels in the ‘land of the five rivers’. But, as said, Punjabis are nothing if they are not highly skilled at handling the changes.
