Permission to include the translated works of Clarice Lespector is on file at the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT A LESSON IN LOVING THE WORD: TRANSLATING CLARICE LISPECTOR INTO POLISH MAY 2017 AGNIESZKA GABOR, B.A., ADAM MICKIEWICZ UNIVERSITY IN POZNAŃ, POLAND M.A., ADAM MICKIEWICZ UNIVERSITY IN POZNAŃ, POLAND M.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Daphne Patai The goal of this thesis is to discuss Clarice Lispector in the Polish context and address the potential gaps in the reception of her oeuvre. Since the principal vehicle of popularizing her writing outside of the Portuguese-speaking world is translation, my thesis also examines the current situation of the Polish translations of Lispector’s work. Based on my research, I contend that the angle of interpretation related to Lispector’s literary awareness has not been well explored in Poland. Given that the perspective related to the creation process constitutes a recurrent characteristic of Lispector’s narrative, I provide a textual analysis of four short stories which specifically deal with this aspect of her writing: “O ovo e a galinha” [The Egg and the Chicken], “A quinta história” [The Fifth Story], “Seco estudo de cavalos” [Dry Sketch of Horses], and “O relatório da coisa” [Report on the Thing]. In order to address and promote this sphere of Lispector studies in Poland, I propose a translation of the above-mentioned four short stories, followed by a description of the challenges I have encountered as a translator of iv Lispector’s complex poetics. A survey of the most influential translation theories contextualizes both the suggested translations of Lispector’s stories and my own translation experience. One molecule said yes to another molecule and life was born. But before prehistory there was the prehistory of prehistory and there was the never and there was the yes. It was ever so. /Clarice Lispector The Hour of the Star, trans. Benjamin Moser/ Nearly forty years after her death and after more than seventy years of critical analysis of her writing, Clarice Lispector continues to inspire readers and critics to discover yet another angle of interpretation of her works. Clarice remains a mystery, a question, an enigma, although she herself disagreed with such a view, saying: “my mystery lies in not having mystery.”1 She was even reluctant to reveal her birth date and often gave misleading answers to critics and biographers. The officially adopted version is that she was born on December 10, 1920 in Chechelnik, Ukraine. She died on December 9, 1977 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Described by the scholar and translator Gregory Rabassa as “that rare person who looked like Marlene Dietrich and wrote like Virginia Woolf,” Clarice has extended her aura of mystery onto her writing, considered by many critics as difficult to categorize: “blunt and pungent yet also intellectual and abstract” (Salamon).

    MACHADO DE ASSIS: O RETORNO PARA O LEITOR CONTEMPORÂNEO José Alonso Tôrres FREIRE* RESUMO: Considerando a importância de Machado de Assis para a literatura brasileira, neste trabalho serão comentadas as releituras que escritores contemporâneos, tais como Ana Maria Machado, Fernando Sabino, Domício Proença Filho, Moacir Scliar e Haroldo Maranhão, entre outros, promoveram a partir da obra do escritor carioca. Como se poderá ver, os alvos mais frequentes dessa ficção que retoma a ficção machadiana são o próprio Machado, revivido em personagem, e suas criaturas dos romances Dom Casmurro (1899), esse em primeiro lugar, e Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881).     O papel das cartas e das confissões na ficção de Fernando Sabino Gabriela Kvacek Betella Resumo Antes de sua morte em 2004, Fernando Sabino pu­ blicou muito da correspondência trocada com amigos desde os anos de 1940. O “balanço” trouxe também o romance iné­ dito Os movimentos simulados, além de re-edições de textos autobiográficos. Embora os eventos dos últimos dez anos da vida do escritor destaquem uma intersecção entre o passa­ do reconstituído e o presente ficcional, no período de 1946 a 1956 já era possível detectar essa associação íntima, razão principal do movimento de sua obra. Although the events of the last ten years of the writers life brought into focus an intersection between a rebuilt past and a fictional present, between 1946 and 1956, it was alrea­ dy possible to detect this close association even before, which constitutes the main reason for the movement of his work. The focus are the connections between childhood memories and adult personality, regarding the character Virgínia in the novel The chandelier (O lustre), by Clarice Lispector, in order to exemplify the function of affective memory and the universal right to a dignified childhood. The function of affective memories is an important trace in the process of identity formation, which contributes to the development of a legal theory regarding children’s rights. Affection is considered a foundation for dignified life, and literary legal reflections contribute to the rethinking of childhood, in the eyes of Law and social studies. Hegemonic Masculinity, Women and Football in Brazil and Argentina DAVID WOOD University of Sheffield, UK The practice of football by women in Latin America is an integral part of historical patterns around the performance of gender roles and offers insights into how power, both symbolic and political, is subject to ongoing processes of negotiation. A study of women’s involvement as spectators and players in Brazil and Argentina since the early twentieth century sees football emerge as a field in which the construction of gender identities, both personal and national, may be contested. More recently, a growing presence of female players, writers and academics suggests that female agency through football in Latin America is an increasingly realistic goal.     Existentialism, Ontology, and Mysticism in Clarice Lispector’s A descoberta do mundo LUIZA LOBO Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro Abstract: This article aims to place Clarice Lispector as the inventor of a new type of newspaper chronicle. The style of her 468 chronicles published weekly in Jornal do Brasil, from 1967 to 1973, and collected in the book A descoberta do mundo (1984), differs from that of her contemporary male chroniclers, such as Rubem Braga, Paulo Mendes Campos, Fernando Sabino, and Otto Lara Resende, or even women chroniclers, such as Rachel de Queiroz and Dinah Silveira de Queiroz. Mingling Sartre’s existentialism and Heidegger’s phenomenology with the Jewish mysticism learned as a child enabled Lispector to write in a style that pioneered modern women’s prose fiction in Brazil after 1970. This article argues that fragmentation and hybridization are the marks of her “discovery” of a new world as a woman writer, making her crônicas predecessors of today’s women’s blogs. After Lispector’s death in 1977, her son Paulo Gurgel Valente collected her Jornal do Brasil chronicles and published them together in a volume titled A descoberta do 56 Journal of Lusophone Studies 4.2 (Fall 2019) mundo.1 My aim is to establish how existentialism and phenomenology were for Lispector a form of questioning life rather than a theoretical reading on her part. The idea of existence and of being was, for her writing, a kind of mystical search for God and the divine in nature.

The main texts draw on a cultural history of Brazil through selected writings by major authors and scholars. The course features an individual creative project on the student’s experience in Brazil to be presented in Portuguese during the final two classes. Requirements No absences allowed in YSS. Para tanto, observa uma série de coincidências cronológicas, temáticas e de enredo; em seguida, examina a solicitação que a peça e o romance fazem ao repertório operístico europeu do século XIX; por fim, procura estabelecer um debate sobre em que medida o horizonte global e a paisagem local podem ser divisados em A hora da estrela.
