In veel van die speeches werd Donald Trump ook afgeschilderd als een invoelende familieman. De absurditeit daarvan is simpelweg adembenemend. Maar ik vond het nog wel eng om te zien hoeveel verschillende mensen er geen probleem mee hadden om daar dingen verkondigen die neerkomen op het simpelweg misleiden van het Amerikaanse volk. Er is een wet die dat verbiedt de Hatch Act — red. En die overtraden ze bewust en openlijk. En zoals gebruikelijk zullen ze ermee wegkomen, zoals er in de familie Trump nooit consequenties waren voor dit soort gedrag. Ik weet niet eens hoe dat kan, nog zwakker zijn dan Donald, maar kennelijk kan het. En hij is er heel goed in om kwetsbaarheden bij mensen te herkennen. Die manipuleert hij dan door angst, door lege beloftes, of gewoon door zijn aanwezigheid. Een van de schadelijkste dingen die mijn grootvader heeft gedaan, is Donald tot iemand te smeden die makkelijk misbruikt kan worden door slimmere, machtigere mensen. Mannen als William Barr en Mitch McConnell de minister van justitie en de senaatsvoorzitter, die vaak als slaafse volgers van Trump worden gezien, red. Iemand als Vladimir Poetin snapt dat trouwens ook. Ik hoop natuurlijk wel dat het sommige mensen van gedachten doet veranderen. Ik hoop ook dat het andere mensen misschien aanmoedigt om naar buiten te komen met onthullingen, informatie die ze hebben over Donald Trump, hoe eng dat misschien ook is. Want hoe meer er over hem naar buiten komt tussen nu en de verkiezingen, hoe groter de kans dat we deze nachtmerrie beëindigen. Het is goed om te weten dat hij nooit meer beter wordt, het wordt alleen maar erger. Dat is belangrijk om te weten. Het probleem is dat als hij ooit professionele hulp zou zoeken — wat hij natuurlijk nooit gaat doen, dus dit is allemaal theoretisch — hij het zo zou voorspiegelen dat alle andere mensen het probleem zijn, en niet hij. Mensen met dit soort persoonlijkheidsstoornissen zijn notoir moeilijk te behandelen. Het zou bij hem hoe dan ook te laat zijn. Het beste wat je kunt doen, is hem tegen zichzelf beschermen. Als kinderen geldt dat voor ons allemaal, maar hij werd naar een militaire kostschool gestuurd, wat wel heel geordend is. Toen hij studeerde, woonde hij in het huis van mijn grootvader, voor wie hij daarna ging werken. Mijn grootvader creëerde begin jaren zeventig de Trump Organization, en ik geloof dat dat vooral een manier was om een baantje zonder verantwoordelijkheden voor Donald te creëren. In al die gevallen had hij geld, deed iedereen wat hij wilde, zei niemand ooit nee. Ik geloof dat hij inmiddels volslagen afhankelijk is van dat soort gecontroleerde omgeving. Hij heeft nooit op een betekenisvolle manier met de wereld daarbuiten hoeven onderhandelen. Ik bedoel, stel je voor dat je hem een appartement zou geven en zou zeggen: oké, de huur is een maand vooruit betaald, maar in die maand moet je een baan vinden, je rekeningen betalen, je gas en licht regelen en voor je eigen eten zorgen. Kun je je dat voorstellen? Hij zou het niet kunnen. Kennelijk denkt hij dat Amerikanen daar een maandelijkse rekening voor krijgen? Ik moet altijd direct betalen bij de pomp. Hij heeft geen interesses, behalve misschien golf en zelfverheerlijking. Helaas heeft hij nooit geleerd wat liefde is. Hij weet alleen, ergens, dat hij er nooit genoeg van heeft gehad. Wat je verder ook van hem denkt, dat is natuurlijk tragisch. Je moet bijvoorbeeld wel altijd komen opdagen bij het kerstdiner, maar dan niet klagen als je een goedkoop supermarktsetje onderbroeken van oom Donald kreeg, of een agenda van twee jaar geleden.     CONTEMPORARY STATE ANTI-"SLAVERY" EFFORTS: DISHONEST AND INEFFECTIVE Karen E. Bravo* Abstract: Contemporary state anti-"slavery" efforts are dishonest with respect to the types of anti-"slavery" methodologies that states implement, including the use of slavery terminology. State anti-"slavery" efforts demonstrate three types of dishonesty: (1) the rhetorical misrepresentation to the public, and within state entities themselves, of the nature of the contemporary exploitation targeted by states; (2) hypocritical protestations of concern, coupled with the pretense that the types of initiatives that states support can succeed (this despite state failure to address the root causes and the fundamental interrelationships of the exploitation with state- supported and -implemented policies and structures); and (3) a form of willful innocence that refuses to acknowledge or deliberately ignores the interrelationships among state policies and the types of exploitation that are targeted by the anti-"slavery" initiatives. In addition, state efforts are ineffective in addressing the types of exploitation that states purport to target. State anti-"slavery" efforts are largely ineffective because the conceptual paradigms supported by states do not challenge the role of states or existing modalities of wealth and resource allocation upon which they depend. Lund ** The #MeToo movement has shaken corporate America in recent months, leading to the departures of several high-profile executives as well as sharp stock price declines at a number of firms. Investors have taken notice and taken action: Shareholders at more than a half dozen publicly traded companies have filed lawsuits since the start of 2017 alleging that corporate fiduciaries breached state law duties or violated federal securities laws in connection with sexual harassment scandals. Additional suits are likely in the coming months. This Article examines the role of corporate and securities law in regulating and remedying workplace sexual misconduct. We specify the conditions under which corporate fiduciaries can be held liable under state law for perpetrating sexual misconduct or allowing it to occur. We also discuss the circumstances under which federal securities law requires issuers to disclose allegations against top executives and to reveal settlements of sexual misconduct claims.

    1/3/2017 Foxman First Monday, Volume 22, Number 1 - 2 January 2017 The crisis in the journalism industry, intensified with the popularization of the World Wide Web, warrants radical rethinking of the professional identity of journalists and their role in society. This paper first suggests replacing the Habermasian public sphere with Dutch historian Johan Huizinga’s magic circle of play to describe the relationship between the press and its audience. Within this new model, the writer configures the rules and boundaries in which the reader is free to respond and subvert, an interplay that increasingly shapes both current news production and expectations of the public. This paper then explores play and playful attitudes in newsroom practices and output through semi­structured interviews with journalists, game designers and educators. The “Game Team” at the news and entertainment Web site BuzzFeed acts as a primary case study of a group of journalists who make a variety of playful products — from full­fledged games to interactives — which they iterate and improve over time, in response to readers’ feedback. Moore The Theological School, Drew University, Madison, NJ 07940, USA; [email protected] Received: 6 June 2020; Accepted: 7 July 2020; Published: 10 July 2020 Abstract: Waxing “biblical,” Donald Trump has described the COVID-19 pandemic as a “plague.” In a different but related register, millions of Christians worldwide have interpreted the pandemic as one of the eschatological plagues prophesied in the Book of Revelation. This article appropriates the reading tactics of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, together with the resources of affect theory, to connect the Book of Revelation with both the Trump phenomenon and the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the article attempts to relate Revelation’s Beast to Trump (to unleash the Beast against Trump) non-eschatologically, in a non-representationalist reading strategy, and to analyze how Trump has manipulated the pandemic for his post-ideological ends.
