For our 35th issue, we focus on those whose work shapes our society in fashion and entertainment. Exuding talent and ambition, our pages shed light on the tastemakers taking over the world with blood, sweat and tears: inspiring generations, serving as role models and having fun all the while. The perfect example is our cover star Rosalía, photographed in Los Angeles by Vince Aung. Ahead of the release of her highly awaited sophomore album, we catch up with the Spanish trailblazer to talk about putting in the work and overcoming challenges. Fellow Spaniard Álvaro Soler reveals how the economic climate prompted his start in music. Stateside, electronic duo SofiT ukker talks promoting inclusiveness through music; Beth Ditto discusses feminism, queer culture and body-positivity and, on the other side of the pond, Australian sensation Cody Simpson addresses climate change. Going from the classics to the breakthroughs, we catch up with the passionate Donna Missal, the heartfelt Jessie Reyez and the unstoppable Jacob Sartorius. In film and TV, the innately talented Maika Monroe humbly explains her start in Hollywood; Scott Haze details what it takes to be an anti-hero in the next blockbuster Venom; Misfits’ Robert Sheehan talks survival mechanisms ahead of Peter Jackson’s Mortal Engines; we meet up with iconic German actress Iris Berben to discuss the social importance of her new project The Typist and Steven Yeun tells us about life (and work) after The Walking Dead. In the fashion realm, we highlight the designers at the forefront of change, including Marni’s Francesco Risso and G-Star RAW’s Adriana Galijasevic. Straight from the catwalks, we delve into the season with workwear as our conductive thread, showcasing a resurgence of innovation, creation and excitement. Model Peyton Knight takes the streets of NYC; Amy Wesson conquers Central Park; Anya Lyagoshina transports us to the fields and Oliwia Lis showcases simplicity. Issue 35, and the mavens that have been part of it, signal a new chapter for Schön! as we turn green, moving distribution exclusively to Amazon (every little helps). With over a million followers on Instagram, millions of streams, collaborations with J Lo, Tini and Flo Rida, music featured in major films such as Despicable Me 3 and a stint as a judge on Italian X Factor, Álvaro Soler is still surprisingly down-to-earth. In 2014, as a recent graduate, he decided to give a musical career a shot – just for a couple of years – but by 2015, his debut single El Mismo Sol had already become a pan-European hit, smashing the charts in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands. “I was 24 when I was finishing university in Barcelona and the Spanish economic climate was pretty bad,” Soler recalls. “You couldn’t get a job – they wanted years of experience, which was impossible. So, I thought to myself, ‘I will just try music for two years and, if it doesn’t work out, I have something else to fall back on.’” It’s lucky for fans that Soler didn’t fall back on an alternative career in engineering, but then music had always been his passion, beginning with piano lessons at ten. While studying Industrial Design at Escuela de Grafismo Elisava, he simultaneously attended music school, giving him an insight into the industry. He started producing when he was only 16. “I connected my instruments to my Mac, saw that I could record track on track, and I was no longer limited,” he recollects. Based between Berlin, Germany and Barcelona, the Spanish-German acoustic artist speaks five languages fluently and has an incredibly broad view of the world, meaning he is not limited by borders either. As reggaeton and pop music remixes featuring Latin artists gain worldwide recognition, the time seems right for Soler to engage fans on a global level. “When we collaborated with Jennifer Lopez, a lot of countries still weren’t so open to Spanish music,” he explains. “It’s cool that people are opening up to that. Anyone that listens to my music knows you can just have fun. It’s understandable that countries like The States and the UK, who don’t need to have any new imports and already have local artists they can work with... It’s cool to see those markets open up. We’ve been doing this a while now already and now we are ready to show people our new music.” New music comes in the form of Soler’s second studio album Mar de Colores, with credits to producers such as pop powerhouse RedOne. The 27-year-old refers to the record as an “important step. Comparing this album to the first one – it’s an evolution. It’s a more mature album. The first was more experimental and now I have this chance to have a fan base…like a foundation of a house that I can build on.” The 13-track album includes the hit single La Cintura, as well as the recently released Ella, a guitar-driven pop ballad. “I wanted to have a different vibe on every song,” Soler says, “so my new album would be interesting to listen to. [It isn’t just] happy vibes and up-tempo songs, but also more ballads – a little bit of everything, even experimenting with trumpets.” However, the release is also a chance for fans to listen to the whole album as a story rather than just a series of singles. “It’s a personal album,” Soler states, “all personal stories of what I have been going through the last few years.” The last few years have resulted in two albums and a slew of hit singles, so how does Soler feel about his decision to give music a chance? “It somehow worked out professionally and here I am now!” he laughs. Alvaro Soler’s album Mar de Colores is out now on Airforce1 Records / Universal Music. words. Estefania Hageman photography. Suzana Holtgrave fashion. Konstantinos Gkoumpetis talent.
