It was during the time TPresident Barack Obama made his first trip to the Jewish nation as leader of the Free World. Mr. Obama elected not to visit the most holy site in the world to all Jews—the Western Wall—the only remaining portion of Herod’s Temple. He declined the opportunity to address the Knesset— Israel’s governing body; and refused to allow students from Ariel University in Judea and Samaria—where Joshua and Caleb are buried, and where I am on the board—to attend an address he made to college students at a conven- tion center in Jerusalem. The speech was so orchestrated that chosen Leftist students applauded loudly at the appropriate times during the president’s speech. President Obama did not visit the Garden Tomb, Golgotha or the Garden of Gethsemane; rather he chose to visit only one holy site—the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem in the Palestine territory. It was there in 1995 that former Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat, the world’s most infa- mous terrorist besides Osama bin Laden, referred to Jesus as a “Palestinian prophet,” and later declared that Christianity was born in the Muslim town of Bethlehem. As the president stood with PA leader Mahmoud Abbas under a pho- tograph of Yasser Arafat, Hamas rockets rained down on the Israeli town of 7 MIKE EVANS Sderot. It is a war crime to target civilians; however, Mr. Obama failed to utter one word of condemnation about the attack. Rather, he continues to promote another land-for-peace plan that would divide Jerusalem and place many of the Christian holy sites under the supervision of Islamic leaders. Despite the danger of this plot to curse Israel and divide Jerusalem, I am not in despair: God is greater than any enemy. For thousands of years, schemes have been hatched to wrest Jerusalem from the Jewish people. I am reminded of the scripture in Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. During my trip, I was privileged to tour an air force base. A soul-stir- ring photograph hung on one wall depicting the train tracks leading into Auschwitz, the most well-known of the Nazi concentration camps. The pic- ture was taken during a recent joint Israeli military exercise. Suspended in the sky over the infamous death camp were three Israeli F-15 jet fighters. Under the picture were the words of David, the shepherd king: “The voice of thy thunder [was] in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook” (Psalm 77:18). Before leaving the facility, the general in command graciously presented me with a framed copy of the picture. Also emblazoned on the photograph are the words: “We the Israeli Air Force pilots in the skies over the camp of atrocities have risen from the ashes of millions of victim. We carry their silent cry. We salute their courage and pledge to serve as defenders of the Jewish people and their state—Israel.” That picture hangs in every air force base in Israel because during WWII US pilots saw the smoke from the ovens (where over one million Jews were exterminated) and asked if they could bomb the railroad tracks to halt trains transporting Jews to their deaths. President Franklin D. Roosevelt refused because he did not want to offend Jew-hating allies. While visiting the air force base in Israel, General Tomar Bar said that President Obama had just landed on Israeli soil. He reiterated that Israelis would not rest because at the end of the day, the decision to defend the 8 JERUSALEM: WHERE HEAVEN AND EARTH MET Jewish people would be theirs, and would be based only on defending and preserving Jewish lives—nothing else. To that, I add my pledge to stand in defense of Jerusalem and its souls as I am sure you do also. 9 Preface erusalem! The very name evokes a stirring in the heart and soul. It has been called by many names: City of God, City of David, Zion, the City Jof the Great King, Ariel (Lion of God), Moriah (chosen of the Lord). But only one name had resonated down through the centuries—Jerusalem! David’s capital! A world map drawn in 1581 has Jerusalem at its very center with what were the then-known continents of the world surrounding it. It resembles a ship’s propeller with the shaft in the center being Jerusalem. Another anal- ogy is of Jerusalem as the navel of the earth. Why? According to Midrash Tanchuma, Qedoshim: “As the navel is set in the centre of the human body, so is the land of Israel the navel of the world...situated in the centre of the world, and Jerusalem in the centre of the land of Israel, and the sanctuary in the centre of Jerusalem, and the holy place in the centre of the sanctuary, and the ark in the centre of the holy place, and the foundation stone before the holy place, because from it the world was founded.”1 Jerusalem’s history can be summed up in one word—troubled! Lying as it does between the rival empires of Egypt to the south and Syria to the north, both striving for dominance in the region, Israel was constantly 11 MIKE EVANS trampled by opposing armies. It has been conquered at various times by the Canaanites, Jebusites, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Ottomans, and the British. While its origins are shrouded in the hazy mists of antiquity, archaeological evidence of human habitation goes back some 4,000 years. Jerusalem is first mentioned in the Bible in Joshua 10:1. We read there that Adoni-Zedek was the king of Jerusalem and fought unsuccessfully against Joshua. The Israelites first occupied Jerusalem

Alan Berg Yom Kippur Morning 5781. “In AD 73 or 74…a Roman soldier taking part in the siege of the Jewish fortress at Masada wrote a line preserved on a papyrus scrap that the Roman poet Virgil’s Carthaginian Queen Dido spoke to her sister, “Anna, my sister, what dreams terrify me in my anxiety.” Perhaps he was thinking of Minna “Fanny” Weizmann; Coincidentally the sister of Chaim Weizmann, who at that time was somewhere in England. Dr. Minna Fanny Weizmann, a physician emigre from Belarus. Like Moses Hess, Minna was a socialist and a Zionist. While in medical school in Berlin, she took the opportunity to escape from Czarist Russia by darting off to Palestine, where she became one of the few women physicians. In early 1914 she met and fell in love with Curt Proffer, a spy for the German Kaiser and who co-incidentally would become a high ranking officer in the 1930s later under Hitler in the SS his private military. This was Jerusalem in 1914. He was worried that she had other male companions. Their bond the evidence shows was true love. Nevertheless, Proffer suggested and Minna agreed that she go to Cairo, present herself as an asset to the British and spy on what the British were up to. She would do this under the cover of her Russian passport, and by spying on the British, Minna would get revenge on Russia, England’s ally, And strengthened the hand of Zionism; Since at this point, Ottoman Turkish Palestine, was an ally of the Germans.

    On the night 27 January 1917, Charles Secrets of Espionage Boutagy, member of a prominent Arab Hidden in Family Anglican family in Haifa, and Aaron Aaronsohn, founder of the Jewish Papers: Agricultural Experiment Station and ringleader of the Nili espionage ring, Charles Boutagy and disembarked from a torpedo boat anchored the Nili Network during off the coast of Atlit, south of Haifa. The boat, named the Arbalète and captained by World War I Captain Smith, had originated in Port Said; Johnny Mansour it was used to ferry British intelligence assets to the Palestinian and Syrian coast, where they would collect information on the Ottoman-German positions and relay it back to the Arab Bureau in Cairo. The men came ashore at night so as not to arouse the suspicions of the Ottomans or anybody residing on the coast near the determined location. Boutagy mentions this incident in his memoirs: “The French Admiral placed the French torpedo boat, ‘Arbalette’ [sic] at my disposal. It was to take Selim Dardas and myself to Haifa to accomplish my mission.”1 He does not, however, mention Aaronsohn. Charles Boutagy devotes many pages of his memoirs to discussing how he was recruited by the British intelligence, how he built his relationship with representatives of the British intelligence apparatus, and especially his relationship with T. E. Lawrence, with whom he met in Cairo multiple times, for long hours. Yet it is striking that Boutagy does not mention the names of members of the Nili espionage group. I believe that their names have been omitted to perform a kind of political cover-up.

    Chapter One _________ A History of Model League of Nations in the United States The origin of intercollegiate simulations of international organizations in the United States can be traced back more than 90 years ago when Australian-born Professor Hessel Duncan Hall of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University organized a two-day Model Assembly of the League of Nations on April 29-30, 1927.1 According to Professor Hall, the simulation of the Assembly of the League of Nations was “the first time that a Model League Assembly, participated in by a number of universities, has been held in the United States.”2 The New York Times reported that the precedents of the 1927 Model Assembly of the League of Nations at Syracuse University were similar conferences held previously in Great Britain and Japan.3 According to one report, the Oxford University branch of the League of Nations Union (LNU) organized a “model assembly” of the League of Nations in 1921. Foreign students studying at Oxford University participated in the “model assembly” as representatives of some 34 countries, including Australia and India.4 Another report indicated that thirteen student branches of the Japanese League of Nations Association “conceived the idea of holding in Tokyo a public session of a Model League of Nations” in 1925.5 The purposes of the Model Assembly of the League of Nations held at Syracuse University in 1927 were to “enable American and foreign students in New York State to meet for a frank discussion of urgent problems of international relations” and to “give them an opportunity of seeing in action the most important organization for world cooperation ever established.”6 The League of Nations organization, the predecessor of the modern United Nations (U.N.) organization, was established by the allied powers at the end of the First World War.
