We recorded 25 species of amphibians and 55 reptiles. The most species-rich families were Hylidae and Craugastoridae for amphibians, and Colubridae and Dactyloidae for reptiles, a pattern similar to that observed on a global scale. Two new species records for Colombia are presented -Pristimantis walkeri and Scinax tsachila, as well as range extensions for Allobates talamancae, Anolis auratus, Dendropsophus ebraccatus, Gonatodes albogularis and Scinax sugillatus. Species accumulation curves and sampling coverage reveal that more field studies are needed for complementing this list, especially studies using methodologies focused on aquatic and fossorial species, and that there could be an effect of deforestation on the diversity of the herpetofauna, which concurs with the lack of canopy amphibians and the exclusive presence of species associated with leaf litter or forest interior in the locations with best plant coverage. Resumen Se presenta un listado preliminar de la herpetofauna de los municipios de Tumaco y Francisco Pizarro, departamento de Nariño, Colombia, ubicados al sur del Chocó biogeográfico, basado en datos de campo y búsquedas en base de datos y literatura. Registramos 25 especies de anfibios y 55 de reptiles, siendo las familias Hylidae y Craugastoridae (anfibios) y las familias Colubridae y Dactyloidae (reptiles) las de mayor riqueza, patrón similar al observado a escala global. Se reportan dos nuevos registros de especies para Colombia (Pristimantis walkeri y Scinax tsachila), así como extensiones de distribución geográfica (Allobates talamancae, Anolis auratus, Dendropsophus ebraccatus, Gonatodes albogularis y Scinax sugillatus). Las curvas de acumulación de especies y la cobertura de muestreo revelan que se necesitan más estudios de campo para complementar esta lista, especialmente los estudios que utilizan metodologías enfocadas en especies acuáticas y fosoriales, y que podría haber un efecto de la deforestación en la diversidad de la herpetofauna, lo cual concuerda con la falta de anfibios de dosel y la presencia exclusiva de especies asociadas a la hojarasca o al interior del bosque en las localidades con mejor cobertura vegetal.     2011 ANNUAL REPORT PANAMA AMPHIBIAN RESCUE AND CONSERVATION PROJECT A project partnership between: Africam Safari, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Defenders of Wildlife, Houston Zoo, Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Summit Municipal Park and Zoo New England. MISSION Our mission is to rescue and establish assurance colonies of amphibian species that are in ex- treme danger of extinction throughout Panama. We will also focus our efforts and expertise on developing methodologies to reduce the impact of the amphibian chytrid fungus (Bd) so that one day captive amphibians may be re-introduced to the wild. VISION The Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project will be a sustainably financed, Pana- manian-led organization that has stemmed the tide of extinctions caused by amphibian chytrid fungus and other threats to amphibians. We will lead successful recovery programs for Pa- nama’s endangered amphibians and serve as an exemplary model that can be replicated to ad- dress the threat of chytridiomycosis to the survival of amphibians worldwide. We also received news from collaborator Doug Woodhams that Bd was detected in Torti on the border of the Darien province in January 2010. We tried several times to get back to Cerro Pirre in the Darien region, but setbacks included flooding and re- ports of FARC activities in the area. As a result, we fo- cused the bulk of our efforts on central Panama with eight expeditions to the Mamoni River Valley, Cerro Brewster, Cerro Bruja and Chucunaque River Valley.

CCB Project Design Document – July 4, 2011 Executive Summary Colombia is home to over 10% of the world’s plant and animal species despite covering just 0.7% of the planet’s surface, and has more registered species of birds and amphibians than any other country in the world. Along Colombia’s northwest border with Panama lies the Darién region, one of the most diverse ecosystems of the American tropics, a recognized biodiversity hotspot, and home to two UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites. The spectacular rainforests of the Darien shelter populations of endangered species such as the jaguar, spider monkey, wild dog, and peregrine falcon, as well as numerous rare species that exist nowhere else on the planet. The Darién is also home to a diverse group of Afro-Colombian, indigenous, and mestizo communities who depend on these natural resources. On August 1, 2005, the Council of Afro-Colombian Communities of the Tolo River Basin (COCOMASUR) was awarded collective land title to over 13,465 hectares of rainforest in the Serranía del Darién in the municipality of Acandí, Chocó in recognition of their traditional lifestyles and longstanding presence in the region. If they are to preserve the forests and their traditional way of life, these communities must overcome considerable challenges. During 2001- 2010 alone, over 10% of the natural forest cover of the surrounding region was converted to pasture for cattle ranching or cleared to support unsustainable agricultural practices.
