Groudle Glen, one of the Island’s best known tourist attractions, doesn’t have many buildings – but almost the whole glen has been shaped by the hand of man. Chris Callow, an undergraduate student of history & heritage at University College Isle of Man, describes the history of the glen and its buildings, and how both are at risk. roudle glen to- day is a popular spot for walkers, who probably don’t stop to ponder how such a well-wood- Ged area came into being. The Isle of Man was originally settled by Celts and Vikings. It is difficult to find the exact words to describe the island but time capsule is certainly apt with respect to some of its transport facilities.

What are community facilities? Community Facilities are essential to everyday life; Schools, Community Centres, Post Offices and the Emergency Services. They form an essential network of support and are basic requirements for the underpinning of sustainable communities. Without basic services, communities tend to lack a sense of belonging and places tend to be little more than groups or estates of housing. Many of the schools in the East contribute towards indoor and outdoor sports provision and halls can be multi-purpose out of school hours. Methodology The facilities were identified through a variety of methods. Most facilities are listed within Governments or Local Authority’s web pages. However, smaller sites that are not listed online and those that are relatively new or used informally were identified through local knowledge and satellite images. For Outdoor Recreation Facilities their areas have been measured for the purpose of bench marking against the targets set out within the Isle of Man Strategic Plan 2016.
