This information document has been submitted by the United Kingdom in relation to agenda item 14*. 2. The attached report describes work commissioned by the UK Scientific Authority (Fauna) from TRAFFIC International and which was referred to in the European Union submission (AC26 Doc. 16.2 Annex European Union p. 6) in response to Notification 2011/049. 3. The work sought to identify, by a process of risk assessment, those commercially exploited aquatic organisms, including sharks, at greatest potential risk from over-exploitation and which might then be subject to further scrutiny to determine if they would benefit from measures under CITES or the Convention on Migratory Species to reduce those risks. The work might thus help to inform the work of the Animals Committee under Res. Conf. 12.6 (Rev. CoP15) with respect to sharks. 4. The report was examined by a 2-day peer review workshop by invited experts which took place in Aberdeen (United Kingdom) from 26-27 September 2011. The report of this peer review workshop is provided as an Addendum attached to the report. Both reports are available at: http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-6120. 5. Based on recommendations made at the peer review workshop on ways to improve the method and to apply it further, additional work was commissioned from TRAFFIC to assess the vulnerability of a single taxonomic group, namely sharks. Foreword The following report was commissioned by JNCC to explore means by which a strategic overview could be taken of the risks posed to aquatic organisms (fish and invertebrates) by commercial exploitation for international trade. In doing so, it might then be possible to identify those species at greatest potential risk from over-exploitation and to seek measures to reduce those risks, involving multi-lateral environmental agreements such as CITES or CMS where appropriate. In developing this method, the authors identified a number of practical difficulties in applying the approach taken. As a result, an expert workshop was held to provide peer review of the method and to identify ways in which it might be improved. The outcome of this workshop, with its various recommendations, forms an addendum to this report; the two should be read in combination. In order to take forward the workshop recommendations, a further application of the method, with refinements, to a single taxonomic group (namely sharks) has been commissioned from TRAFFIC. Background The attached draft resolution is intended to replace the existing criteria for listing species in the appendices of the Convention, for transferring species between the appendices and for deletion of species from the appendices. In addition, it incorporates and consolidates the provisions of various other Resolutions relevant to this topic and provides a basis for their removal from the list of Resolutions of the Convention. Since the Berne Criteria (Resolutions Conf. 1.1 and 1.2) have formed the basis for amendments to the appendices of the Convention since 1976, it is necessary to provide substantial justification for their replacement. General issues International trade 1. CITES was established to address international trade in wild fauna and flora. It is unable to influence the survival of species which are not exploited for trade or species which are exploited within States for domestic consumption. Perhaps the greatest threat to species is the loss or fragmentation of habitats in the countries where they occur: this problem has to be addressed through other measures. International trade may be one of the less important factors influencing the survival of the majority of species and this should be recognized. CITES is an international conservation treaty with a circumscribed role limited to those species which are genuinely threatened with extinction, or which could become so, in which there is significant international trade.

The Management Authority of India has informed the Secretariat that the Government of India has banned the export for commercial purposes of all wild-taken specimens of species included in Appendices I, II and III, subject to paragraph 2 below. 2. India permits the export of cultivated varieties of plant species included in Appendices I and II and has indicated that all products, other than the wood and wood products in the form of logs, timber, stumps, roots, bark, chips, powder, flakes, dust and charcoal, produced from wild sourced (W) Dalbergia sissoo and Dalbergia latifolia and authorized for export by a CITES Comparable Certificate issued by the competent authorities of India are exempted from the general ban. Such Dalbergia sissoo and Dalbergia latifolia specimens are harvested legally as per the regional and national laws of India and as per the prescribed management (working) plans, which are based on silvicultural principles and all are covered under Legal Procurement Certificate; all the material are sold from the Government timber depots through auction or are legally procured and can be exported legally. 3. Starting on the date of this Notification, all the CITES Comparable Certificates will be issued with a footnote, stating that the wild (W) source specimens are covered under Legal Procurement Certificate as per regional and national laws in India.

ABSTRACT - The experiment was performed with 160 tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) with average weight 11.01±2.08 g and total length 7.8±0.18 cm. Fishes were kept in sixteen aquariums with 56 L of water at 29.1±0.4 oC of temperature, initial stocking density 1.97 g/L and constant aeration. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of photoperiod on fish performance. Treatments consisted of four photoperiods: T1 = 6 hours; T2 = 12 hours; T3 = 18 hours and T4 = 24 hours, with four replicates each. Fishes were fed twice a day with commercial extruded feed (28% of crude protein). The experiment was developed in closed circulation system, with volume of water renewal for each experimental unit equivalent to 40 times daily. Fish biometry was performed at the beginning of the experiment and at every 16 days, in order to follow the effects of treatments on juvenile development. Final weight, total length, standard length, height, feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion, survival, specific growth rate, protein efficiency rate and protein retention efficiency were assessed.
