Descriptive Summary Title: The Review of Contemporary Fiction/Dalkey Archive Press : records, Date (inclusive): 1980-1990 Collection number: M0507 Collector: John O'Brien Extent: 30 linear ft. Repository: Stanford University. Libraries. Dept. of Special Collections and University Archives. Abstract: John O'Brien founded The Review of Contemporary Fiction (RCF) in 1980 and established the Dalkey Archive Press three years later. Since its inaugural Spring 1981 issue, RCF has appeared with exact regularity three times a year. Each number is devoted to one or two contemporary figures, predominantly American and British but also some European writers as well. The contents of a typical number include original work by the writer featured, an interview with him or her, a memoir or other biographical reminiscence by literary colleagues, and several extended critical articles. The Dalkey Archive Press began as a modest adjunct to RCF, issuing reprints of books by writers featured in the journal, or associated with those writers. Then in 1986, O'Brien began issuing original works. Language: English. Access Gilbert Sorrentino material is partially restricted. Stanford holds no copyright to the material in the collection, only physical rights. Publication Rights Property rights reside with the repository. Literary rights reside with the creators of the documents or their heirs. • Naked Lunch for Lawyers: William S. Burroughs on Capital Punishment
Batey: Naked LunchNAKED for Lawyers: LUNCH William FOR S. Burroughs LAWYERS: on Capital Punishme WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, PORNOGRAPHY, THE DRUG TRADE, AND THE PREDATORY NATURE OF HUMAN INTERACTION t ROBERT BATEY* At eighty-two, William S. Burroughs has become a literary icon, "arguably the most influential American prose writer of the last 40 years,"' "the rebel spirit who has witch-doctored our culture and consciousness the most."2 In addition to literature, Burroughs' influence is discernible in contemporary music, art, filmmaking, and virtually any other endeavor that represents "what Newt Gingrich-a Burroughsian construct if ever there was one-likes to call the counterculture."3 Though Burroughs has produced a steady stream of books since the 1950's (including, most recently, a recollection of his dreams published in 1995 under the title My Education), Naked Lunch remains his masterpiece, a classic of twentieth century American fiction.4 Published in 1959' to t I would like to thank the students in my spring 1993 Law and Literature Seminar, to whom I assigned Naked Lunch, especially those who actually read it after I succumbed to fears of complaints and made the assignment optional. Their comments, as well as the ideas of Brian Bolton, a student in the spring 1994 seminar who chose Naked Lunch as the subject for his seminar paper, were particularly helpful in the gestation of this essay; I also benefited from the paper written on Naked Lunch by spring 1995 seminar student Christopher Dale. Gary Minda of Brooklyn Law School commented on an early draft of the essay, as did several Stetson University colleagues: John Cooper, Peter Lake, Terrill Poliman (now at Illinois), and Manuel Ramos (now at Tulane) of the College of Law, Michael Raymond of the English Department and Greg McCann of the School of Business Administration.

1 Matt Phillips, ‘French Studies: Literature, 2000 to the Present Day’, Year’s Work in Modern Language Studies, 80 (2020), 209–260 DOI for published version: https://doi.org/10.1163/22224297-08001010 [TT] Literature, 2000 to the Present Day [A] Matt Phillips, Royal Holloway, University of London This survey covers the years 2017 and 2018 [H2]1. General Alexandre Gefen, Réparer le monde: la littérature française face au XXIe siècle, Corti, 2017, 392 pp., argues that contemporary French literature has undergone a therapeutic turn, with both writing and reading now conceived in terms of healing, helping, and doing good. G. defends this thesis with extraordinary thoroughness as he examines the turn’s various guises: as objects of literature’s care here feature the self and its fractures; trauma, both individual and collective; illness, mental and physical; mourning and forgetfulness, personal and historical; and endangered bonds, with humans and beyond, on local and global scales. This amounts to what G. calls a new ‘paradigme clinique’ and, like any paradigm shift, this one appears replete with contradictions, tensions, and opponents, not least owing to the residual influence of preceding paradigms; G.’s analysis is especially impressive when unpicking the ways in which contemporary writers negotiate their sustained attachments to a formal, intransitive conception of literature, and/or more overtly revolutionary political projects. His thesis is supported by an enviable breadth of reference: G. lays out the diverse intellectual, technological, and socioeconomic histories at work in this development, and touches on close to 200 contemporary writers. Given the broad, synthetic nature of the work’s endeavour, individual writers/works are rarely discussed for longer than a page, and though G.’s commentary is always insightful, specialists on particular authors or social/historical trends will surely find much to work with and against here.

! 1! “Hospitality to Words”: Laura Riding’s American Inheritance and Inheritors Philip John Lansdell Rowland Royal Holloway, University of London Submitted for the Degree of PhD ! 3! Abstract This thesis situates the work of Laura Riding in an American tradition of “hospitality to words” extending from Emerson and Emily Dickinson through Gertrude Stein to John Ashbery and contemporary language-oriented writing. The theme is introduced in terms of her linguistic and spiritual ideal of home as a place of truthful speaking, related in turn to her identity as an American writer who renounced the craft of poetry in mid-career. First, Riding’s poetry is “hospitable” in ways akin to Dickinson’s, broadly characterized by Riding’s term, “linguistic intimateness.” There are similarities in their word-conjunctions and styles of poetic argument, as well as their ideas of poetry as “house of possibility” and spiritual home. Riding’s work is then compared with that of her older friend of the late 1920s, Gertrude Stein. The chapter details the shift in Riding’s critical view of Stein; then focuses on the similarly “homely” characteristics of their prose writing and poetics, with particular reference made to Riding’s “Steinian” poems. The central chapters clarify Riding’s conception of truth and related questions of authority, history and responsibility. Chapter 4 explains her poetic vision of “the end of the world” as the introduction to a new world and potentially a new home, and chapter 5 extends the account to include her post-poetic work, The Telling compared to her earlier, collaborative The World and Ourselves.

The labyrinthine ways of this freewheeling escapade make it no surprise that Sorrentino's favourite novel was Tristram Shandy.
