"I came back this year to basically be assistant manager of KAVANAGH MAKES Kildaragh Stud and that role also gives me the leeway at this time of the year to prep and sell foals and hopefully also mares CONSIGNING DEBUT going forward," Kavanagh said. Knowing exactly what you want to do with your life is a focus AT GOFFS devoid in most teenagers, but Kavanagh's path was clear and her third level education centred around an Equine Business Management degree from Enniskillen College in Fermanagh. As soon as college was finished, Kavanagh expanded her horizons and joined the Vigors family at Hillwood Stud for a stint of yearling prep before embarking on her next step even further afield. "From England I went to Australia and worked a season at Yarraman Park Stud which was a brilliant experience,” Kavanagh said. “I then did two months travelling before making my way to New Zealand where I worked the breeding season and yearling sale season at Brighthill Farm.” Cont. p2 IN TDN AMERICA TODAY

Step forward AK , the fledgling consigning business launched by Alice Kavanagh, daughter of the farm's owners Peter and Antoinette. AK makes its consigning debut at the re-scheduled Goffs November Foal Sale at next week with an 11-strong draft of foals, and the young consignor is keen to get things underway. Kavanagh's education and work experience to date has been 100% tailored to developing a career in the bloodstock industry, and launching her own consignment has been the goal since she returned home to Kildaragh Stud earlier this year having spent a number of years around the world honing her craft. Acrobat, whose Group-performed brother Memphis Rocks also ACROBAT DELIVERS won at Flemington on Saturday, was ridden by James McDonald, who had given the stable a glowing report on the colt during the FLAWLESS PERFORMANCE week. “He came in and jumped on him on Tuesday morning and said he didn’t want to be on any other horse,” Maher said. “The horse had a sense of timing about him and trialled well and I thought he would improve off that, but needed a little bit more focus so we put the blinkers on and he was very good.” Maher also said Acrobat’s ability to clear the gates quickly and race on speed was a major asset. “These horses make their own luck and if they can race like that it’s a huge advantage.” Acrobat coasted along behind the leader and when McDonald asked him to hit top gear in the straight he responded positively to dash clear 200 metres off the post and sail home by 2.3 lengths. “He’s very good and Ciaron rang me after his first trial and said he had a really nice colt we’re setting for the race,” McDonald Acrobat | Ashlea Brennan said. “I rode him in work on Tuesday morning with the blinkers on and sat off the other horse. He didn’t take much by Paul Vettise encouragement and was very professional. I thought he only Acrobat (Fastnet Rock) had a massive price tag on his head as had to break cleanly to win.” a yearling and while the market didn’t meet Coolmore’s pre-auction valuation, the global breeding and racing giant now has no regrets about not selling him. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Acrobat had his connections jumping through hoops at Randwick on Saturday following an emphatic debut performance to race away with the Inglis Nursery. Acrobat was offered at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Coolmore with a $1 million reserve and he was passed in when bidding stalled at $950,000, but there will be no regrets in the ownership camp now. The youngster had placed in both of his lead-up trials to provide a snapshot of his ability, but the addition of blinkers come race day proved a masterstroke and the colt raced away to score by 2.3 lengths. “Obviously, there’s a great group of owners in the horse and were involved in his mother (Hips Don’t Lie), who was a great Jack Bruce (left) & Ciaron Maher | Ashlea Brennan racehorse. For him to do that at his first start is very satisfying and Jack Bruce and the team at Warwick Farm have done a FIND US ON FACEBOOK fantastic job,” Maher said. www.facebook.com/thoroughbreddailynews TDN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND • PAGE 2 OF 2 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 13 DECEMBER 2020

KEENELAND DECEMBER LARGENT HIGH-STEPS IT IN FORT LAUDERDALE UPSET DIGITAL SALE: IS THIS Sent off at odds of 16-1 as the lesser-fancied of a pair from trainer Todd Pletcher in Saturday=s GII Ft. Lauderdale S., Largent OUR FUTURE? (Into Mischief) settled in the latter half of the field and took advantage of a fast pace up ahead of him to cause the upset and likely earn a spot in the field for the $1-million GI Pegasus World Cup Turf next month. Largent landed behind midfield as Halladay (War Front) set a searching pace in advance of the fleet-footed Factor This (The Factor) with the equally quick Somelikeithotbrown (Big Brown) outfooted in third. Racing inside down the backstretch, Largent was full of run, but was patiently handled into the final three furlongs by Paco Lopez. Cont. p5

IN TDN EUROPE TODAY KAVANAGH MAKES CONSIGNING DEBUT Alice Kavanagh will offer 11 foals at next week’s Goffs Fancy Green (Fr) at Haras du Grand Chene in France November Foal Sale under the AK Thoroughbreds banner. photo courtesy Haras du Grand Chene Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. by Sue Finley When the owners of Fancy Green (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}--Fancy Stone {Ire}, by Rainbow Quest) decided to enter her and seven others into Keeneland=s December Digital Sale, they did so with years of personal experience with the technology and methods that made digital buying and selling possible. AWe are international owners,@ said Majdolin Shatrit, the Executive Director of Marbat LLC, based in Saudi Arabia. AWe don't live in America or Europe, and so we've used this method for a long time.@ Indeed, the offering of Fancy Green (Fr), who sells as hip 21 in Tuesday=s sale (full catalogue here), represents a quantum leap forward for an increasingly international marketplace with a technology accelerated by the global pandemic of COVID-19. Fancy Green (Fr) is boarded at Anna Sundstrom=s Haras du Grand Chene in Survie, France, about an hour south of Deauville. The 10-year-old mare=s second foal was the Group 1 Criterium de Saint Cloud winner Mkfancy (Fr) (Makfi {GB}) (video). Keeneland December Digital Sale cont. from p1

Mkfancy (Fr) wins the G1 Criterium de Saint Cloud Scoop Dyga AThe travel restrictions were the main reason,@ said Shatrit. AThe sales were not as good this year, as everyone knows, especially in Europe, and we found the Keeneland Digital Sale to be a good opportunity to show the filly to everyone in Europe, Australia, America--all over the world.@ ACOVID has changed a lot about our lives, and about this business,@ said Shatrit. AFor years, in France and all over Europe and America, people have been traveling to buy horses, and it=s very difficult to stop that trade because of travel restrictions. I think this digital sale is very helpful if people really think about it in the correct way.@ Sundstrom, whose Coulonces Consignment sells horses all over Europe, said that the digital sale will be an interesting test, and that Fancy Green is the perfect mare for the situation. AWith what's going on around the world, it's going to be very interesting to see if it works, how it works, what kinds of interest it will get,@ she said. AAnd obviously, Fancy Green is such a high-profile mare, having produced a Group 1 winner. She=s in foal to Saxon Warrior and the buyers are mad about them. They're looking like the real deal, those foals. So, she's a good candidate to do this and she's such a beautiful mare and I think it's enough to see in the videos and pictures, that she's very correct, in great form and shape. It's very exciting.@ Indeed, her location provides some interesting choices and opportunities for a buyer anywhere in the world. AShe's here in France, and she's due at the end of January which means she can foal, she can be covered again, wherever the buyer may be, they can breed her back in Europe to a top stallion. And then, brought to America, Japan or Australia, in foal to Dubawi (Ire) or (GB) or Frankel (GB), it could be quite a nice opportunity. If I lived in America, I would be TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 4 OF 11 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • DECEMBER 13, 2020 interested in that.@ But as the world has moved more and more to online sales over the past decade, the Thoroughbred trade has been slower to adapt. AI think that people don't want to buy horses from digital sales because they are not used to it,@ said Shatrit. AIt's a tradition, they love to go to sales. We love to see the horses.@ But, she said, because of their Saudi Arabian base and the additional burden their location puts on travel, Marbat has conducted its business in this way for years, with the advice of bloodstock David Ingordo, who selects potential racehorses for the group, and Kris Stuebs, who chooses their broodmares. AWe call our agent, they take videos, pictures, send veterinary reports, and based on what we see, we decide on whether we want to buy this horse or not and we put a budget based on what we see. I think now, people should start wanting to conduct their business in this way. When you have a horse=s physical information, his height, his weight, his full vet records, I think this information is enough to buy horses even if you can see the horse physically or not.@ Marbat is also offering Fancy Green=s yearling colt by Myboycharlie (Ire), along with a yearling by Constitution, among several others. AHer yearling is also in the sale,@ she said. AYou can see how pretty, how strong he looks. People love him in the pre-training center. They're all very sound.@ But Fancy Green is clearly the star of their show. AThis broodmare is really beautiful and a top producer. Her first foal is a multiple winner, her second foal is a Group 1 winner. Her blood is free of and Mr. Prospector which makes it easy for an owner to breed her to any type of stallion. She can stay in Europe until she has the foal. She can go to any of the top horses at Coolmore, or Dubawi, Frankel, (Ire)--sires who do very well everywhere; Australia, America. She has the potential to do whatever the owner wants.@ Marbat and its owner, Sheikh Abdullah Almaddah, have successfully campaigned horses such as Green Mask (Mizzen Mast), a $150,000 OBS Spring purchase by Ingordo on their behalf who went on to win over $1 million. Through Stuebs, they have acquired a number of successful broodmares, including Rote, whose progeny have sold for up to $1,250,000, and Miss Challenge, who produced a then-record Saratoga New York bred in 2013 at $430,000. AWe want to do this, we love this and have a great passion for it, but it=s very difficult to be able to travel to every sale in Europe and America,@ said Shatrit. AThis makes it easier for us to look at horses. We look at almost every horse that goes through the sale, then we pick our horses based on pedigree and conformation, then we request more information.@

Accelerated by COVID, digital sales, said Shatrit, really are the future, and should remain when the pandemic has abated. AI really encourage horsemen everywhere to look at this sale,@ she said. AThese sales are very important even if we go back to our normal life, because it=s nice to buy horses everywhere. Maybe you don't have to travel to Australia to buy a horse from there. The digital sale gives the chance to everyone--the owner and the seller--to conduct business in a very easy and safe environment.@ Bidding for the December Digital Sale begins Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. EST.

TAX IMPRESSIVE IN POTENTIAL PEGASUS TUNE-UP Tax (Arch) likely punched his ticket to the $3-million GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park Jan. 23 with a sharp, front-running performance off the bench in Saturday=s GIII Harlan=s Holiday S. The 2019 GII Jim Dandy S. and GIII Withers S. winner hit the gate running from his rail draw and Luis Saez was able to dictate very manageable fractions of :23.87 and :46.96. He began to give them the slip as they hit the top of the stretch and was home free from there, running up the score under confident handling, just missing Social Inclusion=s 2014 track record of 1:40.96 by less than a fifth of a second. A distant ninth at a well-backed 4-1 after stumbling at the start in the 2020 Pegasus back in January, Tax only made one start since, finishing fifth in the GII Oaklawn H. May 2. I encourage people to go back and watch Instagrand=s first two races--his maiden win and the GII Best Pal S.--both of which he won by over 10 lengths. They are jaw-dropping.
