The Workshop was held in November 2006 in the holy mountain of Montserrat, a Nature Reserve and Natural Park located north of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. The Delos Initiative is part of the IUCN World Commission of Protected Area’s Task Force on the Cultural and Spiritual Values of Protected Areas. After the introductions (Chapter 1) from the Chair of the WCPA and the Abbot of the Monastery of Montserrat, Chapter 2 features the four opening addresses, all of great sig- nificance and very individual in style. Chapter 3 contains a comprehensive introduction to The Delos Initiative written by its co- ordinators. It includes descriptions of its goals, objectives, methodology and projects car- ried out, as well as technical guidance for natural sacred sites and a complete overview of the development of the Workshop. Chapter 4 includes five speeches which provide a conceptual context for all of the issues discussed: the relationship between Nature and Spirituality; protected areas and sacred sites of indigenous and traditional peoples; spiritual values in the history of protected areas in Spain; the contribution of sacred natural sites to nature conservation; and the particular experience of the Sacred Mountains Programme in several national parks. The Montserrat case study is presented in Chapter 5. In addition to the standard report, prepared according to the Delos methodology, it features the viewpoints of the main stake- holders in the mountain: the monastic community, the Park Board, walkers and climbers, the company providing services around the main monastery, and a private foundation. Chapter 6, the longest, includes the presentation of nine case studies: two from Finland, one prehistoric (Kolovesi) and the other contemporary, concerning the Sámi people (Ukonsaari); two from Greece, concerning Orthodox Christianity (Athos and Meteora); one from Andalusia, Spain, concerning lay Catholic brotherhoods (Protected areas of Doñana and the Virgin of El Rocío shrine); one singular case from Scotland, United Kingdom, con- 9 01:Maquetación 1 30/11/07 09:08 Página 10 cerning Tibetan Buddhism (the Holy Island of Arran); one from Rumania, concerning Orthodox Christianity (Vanatori-Neamt); one from Japan, concerning Shugen and Shingon Buddhist schools (Kii mountain range and pilgrimages routes), and, finally, one from Tennessee and North Carolina, USA, concerning the Cherokee Native Americans (Smoky Mountains). These case studies encompass a wide range of highly diverse types of pro- tected areas in three continents belonging to all IUCN categories; they were prepared largely on the basis of interviews with key stakeholders. Finally, Chapter 7, the Montserrat Declaration, provides a summary of the main findings and conclusions that can be drawn from the lively discussions that took place during the Workshop. Appendix 1 includes the names of all the participants and the Workshop’s coordinators. Appendix 2 consists of the programme of events, followed by an explanation of how the Workshop‘s organisers decided to compensate for the CO2 emissions it produced. Conserva, a l'actual frontal de l'altar, una escena de la Conversió de Sant Pau del segle XVII. La coberta és a dues aigües amb teula àrab. In Spain the first area declared as a Biosphere Reserve was Sierra de Grazalema (1977). The history of the management of this Protected Area is now significant enough to analyze how the applied initiatives aimed at conservation have harmonized with those most directly committed to social and economic development. This paper provides an extensive review of the conservation and development programmes and associated measures implemented in the last ten years in Sierra de Grazalema. Montserrat a San Jerónimo El 29-07-1929 se pone en servicio el Funicular (7 años habían durado las obras). Era el más inclinado de Europa. (Existe abundante información en Internet, aquí se intentá hacer únicamente un breve resumen y citar curiosidades). El 07-10-1929 Ramon Soler Vilabert tramita autorización para la línea (de autobuses) Sta Cecillia Montserrat- Ramón Montserrat coincidente (Tipo B) con el ferrocarril y utilizando 3 coches. Soler Este mismo empresario también realizará la línea Manresa-Berga. (ver lineas). Ninguna de estas parecen tener vinculación Vilabert con la que vemos en esta ficha, pero la primera tuvo una relación indirecta, ver apuntes siguientes. (Ver ficha). La Empresa que explotaba el Funicular Aereo de San Gerónimo tenía vehículos para enlazar con Montserrat (Monasterio) ya desde sus inicios (ver documento) aunque la constancia más antigua de que se dispone (que es ésta) data de 1932. En 1952 el Funicular de San Geronimo SA está realizando el servicio (de autobuses) Montserrat (Monasterio)-Santa Cecilia- Aereo de San Gerónimo. (Ver líneas). Aunque se cite el nombre con el SA detrás seguramente debe tratarse de una abreviación del auténtico. En 1952 también Miguel Serra Termes está realizando la línea (de autobuses) Cremallera del Monasterio de Miguel Montserrat-Restaurante Santa Cecília con una tarifa muy reducida y solo para usuarios del restaurante, entre Serra los meses de mayo y octubre.

  • Montserrat Rack Railway the Dream of The
    Montserrat Rack Railway The Tren de Montserrat, as the rack railway between Monistrol and Montserrat was known, has been in existence since the 19th century. It was originally built to meet the need for improved access for worshippers and pilgrims to the Montserrat sanctuary. The traditional way up Montserrat mountain had been on foot or horseback along the Collbató or Santa Cecilia paths, from 1698 onwards turned into a road. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that an alternative and much quicker access way was inaugurated. This was the wide gauge line operated by Ferrocarrils del Nord to Monistrol-Montserrat station. From there, the company built a road (1858-59) that reached the monastery by dint of a sti 14-kilometre climb following the line of the old bridle path. This made it possible for a stagecoach service to do the journey in three and a half hours, stopping to give respite to horses and travelers alike at the Font dels Monjos. The lack of a permanent means of transport and an increase in the number of visitors led Joaquim Carrera, engineer and admirer of both Montserrat and Swiss mountain trains, to persuade local businessman Josep M. González to build a rack railway that would link Monistrol station with the monastery. In 1881 the company Ferrocarriles de Montaña a Grandes Pendientes was constituted for the purpose. The rack railway was inaugurated on 6 October 1892, and it soon became the most popular railway in Catalonia, taking its place among the country's most prized traditions.

NATURE PARKS IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA Brankica Cigrovski-Detelić, Dražen Tutić, Dino Udovičić University of Zagreb, Faculty of geodesy Kačićeva 26, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia Abstract Environmental protection, the preservation of biological and landscape diversity, and rational usage of natural resources and energy in the most convenient way are the basic conditions of healthy life and the fundament of a sustainable development of every country. The nature and natural values are of great interest for the Republic of Croatia, and they are particularly protected, which is also legally regulated. There are altogether 11 nature parks in the Republic of Croatia: Biokovo, Kopački rit, Lonjsko polje, Medvednica, Papuk, Telašćica, Velebit, Vranko Lake and Učka. The paper presents the particularities and geographic position of all Croatian nature parks. Key words: Nature Park, natural resources, environmental protection 1. INTRODUCTION Nature Park is, according to the Environmental Protection Act of the Republic of Croatia (National Gazette 162/03) regionally natural or partly cultivated land and/or sea area with ecological properties of international or national significance, with emphasized landscape, educational, cultural and historical, and tourist and recreation values. In the Republic of Croatia there are altogether 11 nature parks: Nature Park Biokovo, Nature Par Kopački rit, Nature Park Lonjsko polje, Nature Park Medvednica, Nature Park Papuk, Nature Park Telaščica, Nature Park Velebit, Nature Park Vransko Lake, Nature Park Učka, Nature Park Žumberak – Samobor Mountains and Nature Park Lastovo islands.
