As part of the Highway Bridges Owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Transportation Thematic Resources nomination effort in 1988, two bridges in Montgomery County were listed with an identical name: "Bridge in Upper Frederick Township." One bridge (a stone arch type) carried Fagleysville Road over Swamp Creek; the other bridge (an iron Pratt thru truss type) carried Gerloff Road over Swamp Creek.
It appears that during the nomination process, data was confused and the form for the Gerloff Road Bridge misidentifies the bridge as being located in Upper Frederick Township. The bridge location is actually within Lower Frederick Township.
To correct the error in the record for the iron truss bridge carrying Gerloff Road, the PA SHPO requests that the NPS update the record by changing the municipality name to "Lower Frederick Township" and changing the name to "Gerloff Road Bridge Crossing Swamp Creek."
To further clarify the name of the stone arch bridge carrying Fagleysville Road (which is correctly identified as being located in Upper Frederick Township), the PA SHPO requests that the NPS update the record by changing the name to "Fagleysville Road Bridge Crossing Swamp Creek."
Changing the municipality name for the Gerloff Road Bridge is essential to maintaining an accurate record. Clarifying the names of both bridges will help address future confusion and provide a more descriptive and accurate name for both resources. PREPARED BY: 06-44(15-21) AGENCY/ORGANIZATION: Dist 6-0 DATE: 11/8/82 Survey Number: T-34 L, Owner: Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Transportation & Safety Building Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17120 Statement of Significance: The Bridge in ~ Frederick Township is an example of a Pratt through truss made with Phoenix column compression members. It was built in 1888. Of the fourteen Pratt through trusses included in this nomination, only this one was fabricated with compression members of Phoenix columns. This patented column was a trademark of the nationally prominent Phoenix Bridge Company. This wrought iron column was fabricated of flanged, segmental sections which were riveted together to form a tube. This bridge is one of only four trusses included in this nomination which are located in thesoutheastern portion of Pennsylvania. Area of Significance: Engineering Boundary Description: The nominated property consists of a 135 feet long by 25 feet wide rectangle whose vertices coincide with the outside corners of the bridge's wing walls, and includes only bridge superstructure and substructure. The PA SHPO requests that the municipality where this resource is located be changed to "Lower Frederick Township," and that the name of the resource be changed and clarified to "Gerloff Road Bridge Crossing Swamp Creek." As we were investigating this error, we noticed that a second bridge was listed with the identical name; we are requesting that the second bridge's name be clarified as "Fagleysville Road Bridge Crossing Swamp Creek." We are requesting that the Keeper's Office accept the Additional Documentation enclosed offering these Technical Corrections.
