Politisch exponierte Lage Schaffhausen liegt keine 50 km nördlich von Zürich, hat aber in der Reformationsgeschichte eine eigene Entwicklung durchlaufen. Stadt und Landschaft Schaffhausen wurden 1501 als zwölfter Ort in die Eidgenossenschaft aufgenommen, also nur zwei Jahrzehnte vor der Reformation. Durch seine geographische Lage war Schaff- hausen politisch stark exponiert. Es liegt nördlich des Rheins; mit Zürich war es mit einer schmalen Rheingrenze verbunden, auf mehr als drei Seiten von habsburgischen Landen umgeben, in de- nen die Reformation nicht Fuß fasste, mit deren Bevölkerung je- doch ein reger Handelsverkehr und viele persönliche Beziehungen bestanden. Die Landschaftsgebiete wurden durch Kauf erworben und hatten oft keine natürlichen Grenzen. Die bischöfliche Herr- schaft Neunkirch-Hallau kam erst 1525 zu Schaffhausen. Germany and the Coming of the French Wars of Religion: Confession, Identity, and Transnational Relations Jonas A. M. van Tol Doctor of Philosophy University of York History February 2016 Abstract From its inception, the French Wars of Religion was a European phenomenon. The internationality of the conflict is most clearly illustrated by the Protestant princes who engaged militarily in France between 1567 and 1569. Due to the historiographical convention of approaching the French Wars of Religion as a national event, studied almost entirely separate from the history of the German Reformation, its transnational dimension has largely been ignored or misinterpreted. Using ten German Protestant princes as a case study, this thesis investigates the variety of factors that shaped German understandings of the French Wars of Religion and by extension German involvement in France. The princes’ rich and international network of correspondence together with the many German-language pamphlets about the Wars in France provide an insight into the ways in which the conflict was explained, debated, and interpreted. Applying a transnational interpretive framework, this thesis unravels the complex interplay between the personal, local, national, and international influences that together formed an individual’s understanding of the Wars of Religion. These interpretations were rooted in the longstanding personal and cultural connections between France and the Rhineland and strongly influenced by French diplomacy and propaganda. Moreover, they were conditioned by one’s precise position in a number of key religious debates, most notably the question of Lutheran-Reformed relations. These understandings changed as a result of a number pivotal European events that took place in 1566 and 1567 and the conspiracy theories they inspired. -

Die to liue, Liue to die.1 In 1592, Mary Sidney published in a single volume her translations of A Discourse of Life and Death. Written in French by Ph. Mornay and Antonius, a Tragœdie written also in French by Ro. Garnier. Although she may initially have undertaken the work for personal reasons, as she mourned the death of her brother, Philip, her decision to publish the translations, some two years after she completed them, 67 was motivated by recent events at court. Criticism of Mary Sidney’s works has long been interested in the political dimension of her work, but scholars have only recently begun to explore more fully the transnational contexts for her literary activity.2 Much of that scholarship has focused on her translation of Garnier’s Marc Antoine. In this essay, I look at the early history of Philippe du Plessis Mornay’s text, originally titled the Excellent discovrs de la vie et de la mort, in order to suggest not only what the work meant for its author when he wrote it in the mid-1570s, but also what additional significance it had accrued for Mary Sidney by the time she published her translation of it in 1592. -

Abstract Early sixteenth century radical Anabaptism emanated in Switzerland during Huldrych Zwingli’s protest against the Roman Catholic Church. Much like Martin Luther, Zwingli founded his reform effort on the Bible being the final arbiter of the faith, sola scriptura, and the sufficiency of the shed blood of Christ plus nothing for eternal salvation, sola fide. Based on these principles both adopted the doctrine of the Priesthood of the Believer which recognized every believer’s Spirit empowered ability to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. These initial theological tenets resulted in the literal reading of the Bible and a very pragmatic Christian praxis including a Pauline pneumatology that recognized the efficacy of the manifestation of the charismata. Radical adherents of Zwingli rejected infant baptism as being totally unbiblical and insisted upon the rebaptism of adults, but only on a personal confession of faith, thus the term Anabaptist. -

Ethics & Bioethics (in Central Europe), 2018, 8 (1–2), 33–40 DOI:10.2478/ebce-2018-0005 Jessenius’ contribution to social ethics in 17th century Central Europe Kateřina Šolcová1 Abstract The aim of the article is to examine and evaluate the social ethics aspects of the pamphlet Pro vindiciis contra tyrannos oratio by the scholar and rector of Prague University Jan Jesenský – Jessenius (1566–1621); first published in Frankfurt in 1614 and for the second time in Prague in 1620 during the Czech Estate Revolt. Therefore, the broader intellectual context of the time is introduced, specifically the conflict between two theories of ruling power correlating with that between the ruler and the Estates after the ideas of the Protestant reformation started to spread. The first theory supported the idea of a sovereign ruler whose authority would stand above the estates to be able to keep the kingdom under control. On the contrary, the so-called resistance theory strived to limit the monarch’s power and to justify a possible intervention against a malevolent ruler – the tyrant. I intend to show that Jessenius´ social ethics which refers to the latter resistance theory was of a pre- modern nature since its conception of State and its reign remained in a denominationally limited framework. Nevertheless; Jessenius’ polemics with the supporters of ruling sovereignty, which seem to be his original contribution, makes his writing a unique political work in Central Europe. Moreover, the second edition of Jessenius’ text (1620, Prague), which for a long time had disappeared from public view, can rightly be considered a remarkable projection of resistance theory toward actual political struggle at the very beginning of the Thirty Years War. -

Die ersten erkennbaren Beziehungen Zwingiis zu Schaffhausen führen in die G-larner Zeit des Reformators und sind zu finden auf dem Gebiet der damals blühenden „Helgenkunst", mit welcher Zwingiis literarisches Schaffen korrespondiert. Man liebte es, politische Zu stände unter dem Bild eines Spiels verschiedener Parteien darzustel len. Der Basler Pamphilus Gengenbach hatte 1514 ein Kunstblatt herausgegeben unter dem Titel „Fluß" x) (nach le flux, der Bezeich nung für ein neu aufgekommenes französisches Kartenspiel), auf wel chem man die am Kampf um Italien beteiligten Mächte als Spieler um einen Tisch gruppiert sieht: den König von Frankreich, den Eid genoß, den Papst, den Kaiser und die mächtigsten Fürsten, die ihre Meinung in Reimpaaren äußern. Nach dem Vorbild dieses Blattes oder seiner Zürcher Nachbildung hat der humanistisch gebildete, lite rarisch außerordentlich tätige Schaffhauser Stadtarzt Joh. Adelfi 2) wahrscheinlich auf die Jahreswende 1515/16 ein „neues Spiel" 3) (ludus novus) erscheinen lassen, das die Situation nach der Schlacht von Marignano wiedergibt. Im Unterschied zu den früheren „Helgen" zeigt der Holzschnitt des Schaffhausers die Potentaten nicht als kartenspielende Menschen, sondern als Tiere, die Trik-Trak, ein Würfelspiel, spielen. Am oberen Ende des Tisches sitzt Papst LeoX., der Löwe mit der Wage, in der linken Tatze den Augenspiegel, die Krallen der Rechten über den Symbolen seiner Macht. Ihm gegenüber ist der Eidgenoß als Ochse, dessen ungemütliche Lage gekennzeichnet wird durch die Katze, die ihm den Buckel hinaufsteigt. Rechts vom Papst sehen wir den doppelköpfigen Adler, den Kaiser, links den Fran zosen als Hahn mit umgehängtem Schwert, und diesem zur Seite den geflügelten Löwen von Venedig.
