Schaengold, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2004 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Brian Joseph, Advisor Professor Donald Winford ________________________ Professor Keith Johnson Advisor Linguistics Graduate Program ABSTRACT Many American Indian Languages today are spoken by fewer than one hundred people, yet Navajo is still spoken by over 100,000 people and has maintained regional as well as formal and informal dialects. However, the language is changing. While the Navajo population is gradually shifting from Navajo toward English, the “tip” in the shift has not yet occurred, and enormous efforts are being made in Navajoland to slow the language’s decline. One symptom in this process of shift is the fact that many young people on the Reservation now speak a non-standard variety of Navajo called “Bilingual Navajo.” This non-standard variety of Navajo is the linguistic result of the contact between speakers of English and speakers of Navajo. Similar to Michif, as described by Bakker and Papen (1988, 1994, 1997) and Media Lengua, as described by Muysken (1994, 1997, 2000), Bilingual Navajo has the structure of an American Indian language with parts of its lexicon from a European language. “Bilingual mixed languages” are defined by Winford (2003) as languages created in a bilingual speech community with the grammar of one language and the lexicon of another. My intention is to place Bilingual Navajo into the historical and theoretical framework of the bilingual mixed language, and to explain how ii this language can be used in the Navajo speech community to help maintain the Navajo language. -

Journal of Sociolinguistics 11/5, 2007: 584–607 Neo-Hymesian linguistic ethnography in the United Kingdom Ben Rampton King’s College, London This paper describes the development of ‘linguistic ethnography’ in Britain over the last 5–15 years. British anthropology tends to overlook language, and instead, the U.K. Linguistic Ethnography Forum (LEF) has emerged from socio- and applied linguistics, bringing together a number of formative traditions (inter alia, Interactional Sociolinguistics, New Literacy Studies and Critical Discourse Analysis). The career paths and the institutional positions of LEF participants make their ethnography more a matter of getting analytic distance on what’s close-at-hand than a process of getting familiar with the strange. When linked with post-structuralism more generally, this ‘from-inside-outwards’ trajectory produces analytic sensibilities tuned to discourse analysis as a method, doubtful about ‘comprehensive’ and ‘exotic’ ethnography, and well disposed to practical/political intervention. LE sits comfortably in the much broader shift from mono- to inter-disciplinarity in British higher education, though the inter-disciplinary environment makes it hardtotaketherelationshipbetweenlinguisticsandethnographyforgranted. INTRODUCTION This is a case study of the development of an arena for the analysis of language in society that has been taking shape amidst a major reconfiguration of knowledge production in higher education, that identifies with inter-disciplinarity, and that looks to capitalise on the importance attributed to language and discourse across the social sciences quite generally.1 The paper describes the emergence of ‘linguistic ethnography’ in and around Britain2 over the last 5–15 years, and it adopts the perspective that Hymes advocated in a 1974/1983 discussion of ‘Traditions and paradigms’. -

Introduction This short historical pamphlet has been produced on behalf of the Executive Committee to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL). Rosamond Mitchell wrote the original history in 1997, and Greg Myers updated it in 2017, following her model. Our aim was to document key steps and events in the development of the Association, and the major issues which have preoccupied it over five decades. We felt this would be helpful to the membership both in maintaining a collective memory, in promoting a positive understanding of BAAL’s achievements to date, and in evaluating possible future directions for the Association. The production of the pamphlet was complicated by the fact that BAAL records are somewhat incomplete, particularly for the early years. -
