Aber was bedeutet schon Winterpause, ist doch die Zeit zwischen November und März von Entwicklungsarbeiten und vielen Testfahrten voll ausgefüllt. Die Königsklasse des Motorsport gibt am 16. März im australischen Melbourne wieder Gas: Die FIA Formel 1-Weltmeisterschaft 2008 wird eröffnet. Insgesamt stehen 18 WM-Läufe im Kalender - am 20. Juli 2008 gastiert die Formel 1 auf dem Hockenheimring. Neben dem erfahrenen Formel 1-Rennfahrer Jarno Trulli (33) startet 2008 der talentierte Deutsche Timo Glock (25) im Panasonic Toyota Racing Team. "Jarno hat viel Erfahrung und wir wissen schon, dass er schnell genug ist, um erfolgreich zu sein. Timo hat seinen Kampfgeist und seine Racer-Qualitäten in der GP2 Serie unter Beweis gestellt, daher glauben wir, dass er das Potenzial hat, in der Formel 1 zu fahren", sagt Tadashi Yamashina, Teamchef und stellvertretender Vorsitzender der Toyota Motorsport GmbH vor dem Saisonstart in Australien. Mit großen Erwartungen geht Toyota in seine siebte Formel 1-Saison. "Im Vorjahr konnten wir sie nicht erfüllen, was für uns enttäuschend war. Wir haben für diese Saison sehr hohe Standrads definiert, um mit den Besten in der Formel 1 kämpfen zu können. Wir wollen die riesigen Erwartungen erfüllen, das ist unser Wunsch. Ich bin sicher, dass das Team und die Fahrer die Herausforderung bestehen werden." In diesem Jahr ist Kamui Kobayashi der dritte Mann im Team. Der Japaner wurde zum Testfahrer befördert; er kommt aus der eigenen Talentschmiede Toyota Young Drivers Program (TDP). Mit der Vorstellung des neuen Toyota TF108 schlug das Team ein weiteres Kapitel in seinem Formel 1 Engagement auf. "Wir sind zufrieden mit den Fortschritten, die wir mit dem TF108 gemacht haben. Es war vom ersten Test an offensichtlich, dass der TF108 ein ganz anderes Kaliber ist als der TF107", erklärt Pascal Vasselon, im Formel 1-Team zuständig für die Chassis Entwicklung. Die Basis des neuen TF108 stimmt, "denn während der Entwicklungsphase habe ich immer gesagt, dass es das primäre Ziel ist, die Stabilität und die Fahrbarkeit zu verbessern. Dies ist uns gelungen." Von Anfang Januar bis Ende Februar konnten die Fahrer viele Testkilometer fahren, die natürlich die Entwicklungsarbeiten des Toyota Formel 1-Rennwagens vorangetrieben haben. März am Start sein wird, in einigen Detail unterscheiden - für den Laien kaum erkennbar. Beispielsweise gehören ein geänderter Frontflügel sowie neue Bremstrommeln und Aufhängungsteile dazu. Pascal Vasselon verrät aber, "das dies an der Optik nicht viel ändert, aber es ist eine Kombination an Detailänderungen, die sich positiv auswirken müssten." Yamashina ergänzt: "Hinter diesem Auto steht ein sehr gutes technisches Team, das von Yoshiaki Kinoshita, Pascal Vasselon und Luca Marmorini angeführt wird. Ich glaube, wir haben eine gute Mischung aus Erfahrung und frischen Ideen." Jetzt fiebert das in Köln ansässige Toyota Formel 1 Team dem Saisonstart in Melbourne entgegen. Neu in 2008: Im FIA Formel 1-Reglement gibt es zum Vorjahr einige Änderungen, die bereits in der Entwicklungsphase des neuen TF108 mit eingebunden werden mussten. Dabei sind zwei wesentliche Abweichungen zum Vorjahr, die Einheits-Elektronik und das nun an vier Renn-Wochenenden in Folge einzusetzende Getriebe - dies gilt für Samstag und Sonntag. Sollte das Getriebe dennoch ausgetauscht werden, muss der betroffene Fahrer fünf Plätze in der Startaufstellung zurück. Mit Einführung der Einheits-Elektronik entfällt die Traktionskontrolle. Dies fordert vom Fahrer einen sensibleren Umgang mit dem Gas- und Bremsfuß. Die Hard- und Software kommt von einem Hersteller und wurde nach den Vorgaben der FIA festgelegt. Sie ist im aktuellen Formel 1-Feld für alle Starter identisch. The Governor brought with him a 33-strong party, including senior representatives of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the Indiana Senate and House of Representatives, the Indiana State Police and Indiana community leaders. They were given a tour of the Formula 1 factory, seeing where the TF107s are designed and built in Cologne, a sister city of Indianapolis. Following a short presentation from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation on their activities in and around Cologne, Governor Daniels was presented with a special gift to remember his visit – a genuine Formula 1 steering wheel.

This was the first time I have driven at the Fuji Speedway so I had to learn the track this morning. It didn't take too long - two or three laps, but it's not an easy circuit. It's especially difficult to find the right compromise for the long high speed straight and the last sector which is very technical. But we sorted out a lot of stuff and we brought everything together for the second practice, which went well.

We finished right behind the top three teams so that is the most we could expect from this weekend. I made a strong start and I was able to gain a couple of places into the first corner. I briefly came under pressure from Nico Rosberg early on but then I started to do my race. The car was well balanced, I knew I was quick and we had a good strategy so I just got my head down. The car's pace was very strong, both cars finished and we looked very competitive. This result gives us a boost for the future. We will now head to the test in Barcelona looking to build on this in preparation for the next race."     F1 Digest 2009 Season Preview – The Teams Hello and welcome to the second episode of the F1 Digest 2009 Season Preview. The teams have been packing in the miles before the in‐season testing ban comes into force, and we’ve had a good look at all the new cars, and how they compare with each other. Let’s take a look at how they stack up. The Teams Force India F1 Team Principal: Vijay Mallya Debut: Australia 2008 Championships: 0 We’re starting at the wrong end of last year’s championship finishing order, and that means Force India. We know this team has undergone massive changes through its evolution from Jordan to Midland to Spyker to Force India. You would think that some consistency would be the key, but the only major elements remaining in place for 2009 are Dr Vijay Mallya and the drivers, Fisichella and Sutil. Taking over the Team Principal role, Mallya booted out Mike Gascoyne and Colin Kolles almost immediately the season was over. Supposedly, Vijay prefers a more hands on approach, and there were rumours that the pair had differing ideas over the future of the car. But has Mallya bitten off more than he can chew? The Force India has not only been redesigned on the outside to fit the new aerodynamic regulations, but the team have had to incorporate a brand new Mercedes engine and KERS device on the inside. This delayed the car’s launch, meaning they’ve only had a week or so worth of testing. Thankfully, though, there don’t seem to have been any major problems on the car, or in testing, and whilst they don’t seem to be ready to get competitive, they are arguably not two seconds a lap behind anymore.
