In their susceptibility to oxygen poisoning they behaved like cells ofthe brain or the liver, but even more emphatically. Thus we have a situation in which this new agent, hyperbaric oxygen, may have a double effect on a contaminated wound. It will bring more oxygen to the ischaemic tissue and thus improve its nutrition and it may have a direct effect on the infecting bacteria. We do not yet know that it will be effective in vivo and it can hardly be expected to be so dramatic in its effects on a wound as the direct application of carbolic acid in the boy James Greenlees in 1865. But at any rate it leaves us with the salutary reflection that, nearly a hundred years after Lister's first case, there is still room for original research and experimentation on the subject of putrefaction in wounds.

51 CEREMONY OF PRESENTATION OF DIPLOMATES determination. Also every patient goes through patches when he thinks he is going to be all right next day, and then that he is making no progress. If in the latter case the surgeon puts in the right word at the right moment, it banishes the depression and gives a great boost to one's confidence that one is going to get better soon. Every surgeon knows that although it cannot be accurately gauged, yet the determination of the patient to get better plays a very large part in his recovery. " Secondly, you are going to find that your profession is one of the most exacting in the world. You will have very long days needing great concentration, you will be called out at night, and when at home you will have to catch up on your reading in order to keep abreast of problems in your profession. It will be very tempting to drop all outside interests, but I do hope you will try and keep some hobby and some outside interest if you can. There are some very good examples behind me on the platform, for example Sir Arthur Porritt with the Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games and Sir Geoffrey Keynes with the arts. In fact I feel sure all members of the Council have some other interests. These keep you in touch with people outside, give you a more balanced outlook on life and more pleasure. In addition it is a two-way traffic and you enrich the lives of those others with whom you come in contact. " Thirdly, this great edifice of the College, and indeed much of the standards of the sur-ical world outside, are based, not just on a series of individuals going their own way, but on the dedicated co-operative hard work of many people all down the line. This includes attendance at Council meetings, committee meetings and sub-committee meetings, whether here, in the teaching or other hospitals. Sometimes these meetings may seem dull, but I do hope that all of you will feel like putting something back and will yourselves take your turns on them, because it is on them that the greatness of the organization is basically built. " I hope that you may think that these three bits of advice are of interest. I end by congratulating you all again and wishing you well for the future. To you, Mr. President, may I say that of all the treasured days of my life this is going to be one of the most golden." The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Lord Exeter by Mr. C. Naunton Morgan, Vice-Presidenit.

IMPERIAL CANCER RESEARCH FUND Sixty-first Annual General Meeting, 7th April 1964 THE MOST HONOURABLE THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY was in the Chair. Sir Cecil Wakeley, the Chairman of Council, opened the meeting by presenting the 61st Annual Report summarizing the Fund's activities during the past year. The emphasis of the work lay in the study ofhuman cancer and, as in previous years, the main lines of research were concerned with tumour viruses, leukaemia, breast cancer and prostatic cancer. Since 1960 the graduate staff had more than doubled, and the Director of Research, Dr. G. F. Marrian, was well satisfied with the development of the programmes at Mill Hill and in the new laboratories at Lincoln's Inn Fields. The collaboration and help received from surgeons and physicians in London and elsewhere was most encouraging. Clinical co-operation 64 IMPERIAL CANCER RESEARCH FUND The Chairman of Council then recalled that this was the last occasion on which the Marquess of Salisbury would preside at the Annual General Meeting of Governors. The Fund was deeply indebted to Lord Salisbury for his help and guidance in establishing the new laboratories and his association with the work would long be remembered. Mr. Angus Ogilvy had agreed to serve as the Fund's next President and he took up the reins at an exciting time. Much of the work looked promising, and in the new building the staff enjoyed unrivalled facilities for the study of human cancer. The 61st Annual Report of the Fund was unanimously adopted and, after the formal election of Officers, the meeting concluded at 2.50 p.m.
