5/20/2011 Great Western Railway ships - Wikipedi… Great Western Railway ships From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Great Western Railway’s ships operated in Great Western Railway connection with the company's trains to provide services to (shipping services) Ireland, the Channel Islands and France.[1] Powers were granted by Act of Parliament for the Great Western Railway (GWR) to operate ships in 1871. The following year the company took over the ships operated by Ford and Jackson on the route between Wales and Ireland. Services were operated between Weymouth, the Channel Islands and France on the former Weymouth and Channel Islands Steam Packet Company routes. Smaller GWR vessels were also used as tenders at Plymouth and on ferry routes on the River Severn and River Dart. The railway also operated tugs and other craft at their docks in Wales and South West England. Picture Gallery Promoting Britain's Railway for Passengers and Freight CHAIRMAN'S INTRODUCTION I wrote about the need for more passing places between Exeter and Yeovil Junction in our last newsletter of December 2016. Nothing changes! We still don’t have them and incidents continue to happen. How useful they would have been for diverting all the delayed trains, rather than just a few, following the recent fatality on the railway north of Taunton on 7th November. Railfuture will continue to press for improvements to the Waterloo line to allow more trains to run. Similarly we will continue to press for the complete reopening of the Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton line. It is needed every time the sea disrupts train services through Dawlish, when the line is closed for planned engineering work and to increase line capacity west of Exeter. We cannot campaign for more trains to Dawlish and Teignmouth without recognising that this uses up line capacity, that could otherwise be used for developing more long distance services and freight. -

This proportion is unequalled since 1965, when the Beeching axe was falling most heavily. In fact we travel twice the distance by rail is we did fifty years ago even though our rail network is far smaller. But as train travel grows in importance, so places that are cut off from the rail network face growing disadvantages. -

Photo: Julian Langston Rail Wales issue 64 Spring 2018 www.railfuturewales.org.uk Page 1 WELCOME Rail Wales is published every six months and looking back at events since the last issue, it sometimes seems that the fast pace of significant news would require a weekly issue to keep Railfuture members up to date with the ever-evolving rail scene. Needless to say, the ongoing saga of the letting of the Wales and Borders franchise provides the main focus of attention. Shortly before the last issue of Rail Wales appeared, Arriva announced that it was withdrawing from the bidding process. This reduced the bidders to three. However, the withdrawal of a second bidder in February 2018 was not as a result of that company (Abellio) deciding to walk away but as a result of the financial collapse of its civil engineering partner, Carillion. The two bidders still standing are Keolis and MTR. With only two companies now competing, this weakens the hand of Transport for Wales (the organisation set up by the Welsh Government to undertake the selection of the new operator) to obtain the best outcome. It is hoped that the ongoing discussions, which are nearing conclusion, will result in a franchise award which provides existing and potential new rail users in Wales and adjacent areas of England with a markedly improved service in terms of service frequency, reliability, comfort and value for money. -

In 1982 its findings and recommendations were broadly supported by the Transport Select Committee. However, since 1990, virtually no electrification has taken place. This must change, now!
