Designed for Speed: Three Automobiles by Ferrari k \ ' . r- ; / THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, NEW YORK The nearer the automobile approaches its utilitarian ends, the more beautiful it becomes. That is, when the vertical lines (which contrary to its purpose) dominated at its debut, it was ugly, and people kept buying horses. Cars were known as "horseless carriages." The necessity of speed lowered and elongated the car so that the horizontal lines, balanced by the curves, dominated: it became a perfect whole, logically organized for its purpose, and it was beautiful. —Fernand Leger "Aesthetics of the Machine: The Manufactured Object, The Artisan, and the Artist," 1924 M Migh-performance sports and racing cars represent some of the ultimate achievements of one of the world's largest industries. Few objects inspire such longing and acute fascination. As the French critic and theorist Roland Barthes observed, "I think that cars today are almost the exact equiv alent of the great Gothic cathedrals: I mean the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population which appropriates them as a purely magical object." Unlike most machines, which often seem to have an antagonistic relationship with people, these are intentionally designed for improved handling, and the refinement of the association between man and machine.

  • Phil Hill on the Iconic Ferrari 250 GTO "Why Are We Driving This Damn Coupe?"
Article from Road and Track: https://www.roadandtrack.com/motorsports/news/a18029/ferrari-gto- history/ Phil Hill on the Iconic Ferrari 250 GTO "Why are we driving this damn coupe?" By Phil Hill Apr 20, 2017 In honor of what would be his 90th birthday, we're republishing this story, from the January 2000 issue of Road & Track, by the legendary Phil Hill. Many of you probably know Hill as a brilliant racer, notably the only American-born F1 champ, but he also wrote a number of eloquent, insightful articles for R&T, like this on the Ferrari 250 GTO. Enjoy. – Ed. When Olivier Gendebien and I were assigned to drive the new Ferrari GTO at Sebring in 1962, we were somewhat offended. Stirling Moss, Innes Ireland, the Rodriguez brothers, and other drivers were in sports prototypes, aiming for an overall win, and we wondered if there was a conspiracy against us. "Why are we driving this damn coupe?" There was an excellent reason Olivier and I were in the GTO. The Manufacturers' World Championship for 1962 was based on points scored by Grand Touring cars. Sports cars were now called prototypes, and while Stirling, Innes, and the others were running for the glory of the overall win, we were chasing points for the championship ... and earned the maximum by winning the GT class and finishing 2nd overall. As it turned out, the GTO was a delight to drive. That's probably because the emphasis put on the GTs to win the championship meant there was extra effort put into this car, so the GTO was a giant step beyond the Grand Touring cars built up to that point.

Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order.

1989 Ferrari F40 Chassis No. ZFFGJ34B0000 83619 Komplett originaler Ferrari F40 • zwei Deutsche Vorbesitzer • 8.500 Originalkilome- ter • voll Ferrari Classiche zertifiziert • dokumentierte Historie • matching numbers mit allen Services und Unterlagen Exceptionally original Ferrari F40 • two owners from new • 8.500 kms from new • fully Ferrari Classiche certified • well documented car with nice history • matching numbers, all services and books Model history: What qualifies as a 'supercar'? Although this is a highly debatable question, few automoti- ve enthusiasts will disagree when it comes to the Ferrari F40. This thoroughbred from Ma- ranello's finest stable incorporates everything needed to be a true 'supercar', and more. Built to celebrate the marque's 40th anniversary, the F40 was a development of the 288 GTO. Whereas the GTO's looks are understated, the F40's curvaceous body and huge re- ar wing just scream performance. Penned by Pininfarina, the F40 shares some design e- lements with the 288 GTO Evoluzione race car. ____________________________________________________ This car is offered exclusively through Jan B. The chassis consists of a composite central section with steel tubular space frames on either end to support the suspension. This setup offers a good balance between light weight and rigidity. Suspension is by double wishbones all- round, helped by coil springs over dampers and an anti-roll bar fore and aft.
