Michael Clegg is an accomplished Strength & Conditioning Coach who made the successful transition from a playing career with Manchester United FC to coaching and player development through a passion for optimising athletic performance and a commitment to continuous innovation within football.

Currently the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at club Sunderland AFC, Michael has driven improved power, speed and conditioning within his elite players through a comprehensive understanding of the specific physical demands of football at the highest level.

Sunderland AFC Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Oct 2006 - Present

• Overseeing the complete S&C programming of the 1st team squad in line with the club’s fixture schedule, players’ individual development needs and the manager’s philosophy on the field • Implementing S&C training programmes that integrate with the coaching schedule and physiological requirements of each player • Maintaining constant contact with the 1st Team Manager to keep them updated of physical progression in the players, required adjustments to training loads, rehabilitation timelines, etc. • Working with elite players in the reserves, U18s and U16s to make tangible improvements to their physical development • Managing long term injury reduction and prevention programmes to enhance player availability throughout the season • Coordinating S&C Coaches and other eamt support staff in the provision of continual best practice, providing personal mentoring and ongoing education opportunities as required • Contributing to community outreach by delivering lectures on S&C, health care and best practice at a grassroots level • Hosting S&C conferences at the Academy of Light as well as lecturing at local colleges and schools

Key Achievements 3 Sunderland won the Championship title in 2006/07 to seal an immediate return to the Premier League, and have remained in the top flight until 2017. 3 Players’ physical performances have improved as the club has led the way in successfully integrating weight training techniques
