A newly-erupted, relatively unworn M3 exhibits drastically different characters than that tooth would after a lifetime of wear. On a highly-worn molar, the lophs that comprise the occlusal surface are more broadly spaced and the enamel ridges thicken in comparison to these respective characters on an unworn molar. Since Mammuthus taxonomy depends on the lamellar frequency (# of lophs/decimeter of occlusal surface) and enamel thickness of the third molar, given the effects of wear it becomes apparent that these taxonomic characters are variable throughout the tooth’s life. Therefore, employing static taxonomic identifications that are based on dynamic attributes is a fundamentally flawed practice. -

Da die Bearbeitung dieser Reste einen ein- gehenden Vergleich mit rezenten und fossilen Schweinen notwendig m^achte und über- dies eine moderne, zusammenfassende Studie über die Evolution der fossilen und rezen- ten Suiden fehlt, schien eine solche wünschenswert. Ein derartiger Versuch war auch schon dadurch gerechtfertigt, als die eingehenden Vergleichsuntersuchungen an fossilem Material zu der Erkenntnis führten, daß innerhalb verschiedener Stammlinien unab- hängig voneinander ähnliche „trends" und damit mehrfach Parallelerscheinungen auf- treten. ^ Gleichzeitig wurde auch der Versuch gemacht, die Evolution der Suiden von ver- schiedenen Gesichtspunkten (z. B. morphologisch-historisch, funktionell-anatomisch und ethologisch) aus zu betrachten und damit schließlich die tatsächlichen phylogenetischen Zusammenhänge aufzuzeigen. -

A Study of the Animal Bone Recovered from Pits 9 and 10 at the Site of Nagsabaran in Northern Luzon, Philippines Philip J. Piper1, Fredeliza Z. Campos1, and Hsiao-chun Hung2 Abstract Excavations in 2004 at the site of Nagsabaran in northern Luzon produced a small but important animal bone assemblage dating to the Neolithic and Metal Age periods of the region. Detailed zooarchaeological analysis of the bone fragments has demonstrated that during the Neolithic period human subsistence strategies focussed on the hunting of wild pigs and deer, supplemented by the rearing of domestic pigs and fishing. In the Metal Age, the immense shell middens attest to the importance of aquatic invertebrates in the diet, but human populations continue to hunt wild pigs and deer and raise domestic pigs as they did in the Neolithic period. The domestic dog is evident within the archaeological record from about 1,500 years ago. Introduction The archaeological site of Nagsabaran in northern Luzon (Figures 1a and 1b) consists of a large shell midden located on the south bank of the Zabaran Creek (or Nagsabaran Creek), close to where it joins the Cagayan River from the west. Tempe Lake, which covers an area of about 13,000 hectares, has a species of freshwater fish that is rarely found elsewhere. This is because the lake is located on the slab of australia and asia. This lake is one of tectonic lake in Indonesia. Tempe Lake is supplied with water from the River of Bila and its tributaries Bulu Cenrana. In addition to supplying water, the two rivers also cause siltation due to high erosion upstream. The management of Lake Tempe fishery in Wajo Regency that is environmentally friendly must be based on the applicable law that is the Law of Ministry of Environment and the Fisheries Law. In the management of environmentally friendly fisheries, there are regulations in the Forest Management and Fisheries Law. The regulation is a process that must be done to make the management integrated into ecological and economic aspects, namely sustainable management of lake fisheries. -

Es ist der erste Schädelrest dieser Art, die damit erstmalig sicher aus dem österreichischen Tertiär nachgewiesen ist. Ein Vergleich mit fossilen und rezenten Suiden zeigt die generische Sonderstellung von Microstonyx. Sie wird als Endform der Hyotheriinen und nicht als Angehörige der Suinae ge- deutet und vom miozänen Hyotherium abgeleitet. Die Gattungs- und Art- Diagnose wird neu definiert. Microstonyx antiquus ist als Mitglied der Hipparionenfaunen vom Eppels- heim-Typ eine Waldform, M. major dagegen ein Savannenbewohner und Ange- höriger von Pikermi-Faunen. -
