Troop 4s istoric ike ampouts

In April, Troop 334 completed their fifth Historic Hike ampout. This year the Troop, chartered with hestnut Hill hurch in Lower Milford Township, traveled to alley orge National Historical Park. Previous years brought them to Harper’s erry National Historical Park, Antietam National Battlefield, and twice to Gettysburg National Military Park. According to Troop 334’s Historic Hike organizer, Phil Moreira, ur spring Historic Hike is one of our most popular trips of the year because it combines camping, hiking, American history, monuments, battlefields, re-enactors, and of course fun.

Each of these National Parks has a designated BSA hiking trail varying in length from 10-15 miles. or example, the Gettysburg trail includes a Billy ank 10 mile trail, plus a ohnny Reb 4 mile trail. There is also an accompanying booklet with information about places along each hike for the boys to learn. The Troop was lucky enough to encounter April 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park battlefield re-enactors along the trail on each of their trips. Upon May 2014 Gettysburg National Military Park again completion of all the reuirements, each boy received a medal or patch.

The Troop camped at nearby campgrounds for the Gettysburg and alley orge trips. They were able to camp directly on the Antietam National Battlefield’s site for the Antietam and Harper’s erry trips.

Some of Troop 334’s highlights from the Historic Hike ampouts include hiking 1200 vertical feet for a stunning view of Harper’s erry and the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, having lunch on April 2012 Antietam National Battlefield the rocks at evil’s en in Gettysburg, and running across the field towards the High ater Mark at the end of the Billy ank hike to imagine what Pickett’s charge might have been like.
