1 Music Festival Capitalism Chris Anderton Abstract: This chapter adds to a growing subfield of music festival studies by examining the business practices and cultures of the commercial outdoor sector, with a particular focus on rock, pop and dance music events. The events of this sector require substantial financial and other capital in order to be staged and achieve success, yet the market is highly volatile, with relatively few festivals managing to attain longevity. It is argued that these events must balance their commercial needs with the socio-cultural expectations of their audiences for hedonistic, carnivalesque experiences that draw on countercultural understanding of festival culture (the countercultural carnivalesque). This balancing act has come into increased focus as corporate promoters, brand sponsors and venture capitalists have sought to dominate the market in the neoliberal era of late capitalism. The chapter examines the riskiness and volatility of the sector before examining contemporary economic strategies for risk management and audience development, and critiques of these corporatizing and mainstreaming processes. Keywords: music festival; carnivalesque; counterculture; risk management; cool capitalism A popular music festival may be defined as a live event consisting of multiple musical performances, held over one or more days (Shuker, 2017, 131), though the connotations of 2 the word “festival” extend much further than this, as I will discuss below. For the purposes of this chapter, “popular music” is conceived as music that is produced by contemporary artists, has commercial appeal, and does not rely on public subsidies to exist, hence typically ranges from rock and pop through to rap and electronic dance music, but excludes most classical music and opera (Connolly and Krueger 2006, 667). -

Typical for the concrete, brick and asphalt slathered areas of the Italian Market in South Philly. I was home from my job that summer – a short break from the administration office of a hospital emergency room where the temperatures in human dialogue were just as humid and sweat-breaking. It was 1969. I was getting ready to head into my senior year of high school. As my classmates and friends at that time would tell you, I was not exactly a typical teenager of my era. I had no time for hippies and “liberal” postures. I was a pretty narrow-minded young guy. Sure, I liked the dance music of my times; but I had no affinity with the beaded, tie-dyed, head-scarfed hippies of the era. At least I marketed myself that way. It felt safe. There I was. On this hot weekend at the end of a day now watching a special report on my parents’ television. Something was going on somewhere in New York State. Never heard of the place. Some farm or something called “Woodstock.” A music convention or something seemed to be going on. Having studied music myself and being a musician and vocalist since I was four years of age, the report caught my attention. In fact, it also made it into newspapers and the radio. -

Forget about the vibe; vibes come and go. The effects of the brown acid have finally worn off. Peace and love? A noble, albeit archaic, concept. They even managed to get traffic moving on the New York State Thruway again— though just barely. Yet for all the event’s remnants eroded by time, Woodstock remains the cynosure of a generation with a conflicted identity. A great many hippies morphed into a species that swapped their bellbot- toms for a Prada suit, their VW vans for a BMW SUV, and spare change for a 401(k). Others craving more civil liberties became libertarians, while those prophesying free love wound up prostrate, in divorce court. Who of us vow- ing to share the land ever suspected we’d land a jumbo mortgage? Or vote for a guy who pledged to end welfare (well, maybe not him)? In any case, a lot of screwy stuff has come down the pike. Boomers persist in embracing Woodstock as a warm, fuzzy keepsake; a special moment from their past that continues to burn in their loins like a first love. There is ample justification for it. Woodstock sets them apart from earlier generations that followed a narrow, buttoned- down script for their lives. -

IFEA PRESIDENT’S LETTER BY STEVEN WOOD SCHMADER, CFEE BOLD CHOICES “May your choices reflect your hopes and not your fears.” - Nelson Mandela ’d like to start this article by remembering our friends and professional colleagues with the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Execu- tive Director of the festival, Brian Bowe, sent his appreciation to all of us in the IFEA family for our thoughts and support in Ithe wake of the tragic mass shooting at his event on July 28th. And while it has only been 3 1/2 months since that horrible occurrence, the number of additional shootings and tragedies, at other soft-target venues and locations, since that time, can make it feel like an eternity has passed. But to so quickly allow ourselves and others to become accepting of that, as an almost expected and natural occurrence, while waiting for the next unthinkable headline, is unacceptable. We continued to hold multiple sessions at this year’s IFEA Convention, which is also becoming almost the norm each year, to address what we may all do to protect our events and our stakeholders moving forward; and while we will ask everyone in our industry to continue working closely with your law enforcement officials, insurance carriers, professional peers and city management to take every step possible to protect against future tragedies, please remember to let your government and political representatives – at at every level - know that this is unacceptable and that we expect them to take common-sense action to help stem, slow and stop this long-running and expanding pattern that runs in direct conflict with what our events are created to do – to provide safe, welcoming and inclusive participation by all attendees, while celebrating who we are when we are at our best. -

UNSEEN ARCHIVE OF WOODSTOCK IMAGES UNEARTHED Taken by an unknown 17-year-old photography student – published posthumously for the first time in a new limited edition publication, Woodstock Experience. London August 2009: A forgotten archive of photographs, taken at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair 40 years ago has been unearthed by UK-based limited edition publishers Genesis Publications. Taken by 17-year-old high school student Dan Garson, the archive has spent the last four decades in a basement, stored in a cardboard box. As well as images of the mud, rain, trampled fences, drugs, skinny dippers and eccentric festival goers that have made Woodstock so iconic, the archive features previously unseen shots of Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, Ravi Shankar, Arlo Guthrie and The Band in performance. Rona Elliot, the former entertainment correspondent for NBC!s Today Show, worked at Woodstock as a community relations officer and helped track down Dan Garson!s archive and researched his story. RONA ELLIOT: Dan!s remarkable photographs reveal an exceptional talent, fully formed at 17 years of age. His pictures provide a cohesive narrative of his own Woodstock experience. They demonstrate that he understood, perfectly, both where he was at that moment in time, and the culturally shifting spectacle he was recording. While Dan worked in the photo pit, shooting the musicians onstage, he separated himself from the other photographers. Rather than huddle together with the group, Dan stationed himself adjacent to the film crew. As a result, his images are both unfamiliar and fresh to the eye nearly 40 years after they were taken. -
