As a young man of 19 years old, I watched the television and read the newspapers with the same degree of excitement and fascination as most of the British population. In the following year, as a direct result of the passion and glory that surrounded the war I joined the British Army as a Royal Military Policeman. -

Revista de Estudios Globales y Arte Contemporáneo| Vol. 5 | Núm. 1| 2017-18 | 341-384 Clare Carolin Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford THE “INEVITABLE SUGGESTION Oxford, United Kingdom OF LATIN AMERICA”: LINDA KITSON AND LEON GOLUB REPORT TO LONDON IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE FALKLANDS/MALVINAS WAR OF 1982 Introduction On 15 June 1982, Argentinean troops surrendered to the British Task Force in the Falklands/Malvinas.1 This ended a 72-day war in which around 1000 British and Argentinean military personnel died in a dispute over a remote piece of British sovereign territory inhabited by 1.800 islanders. A month later, Linda Kitson, the only official artist of the conflict, presented to an expectant press corps at the Imperial War 1 I refer to the islands as the Falklands/Malvinas in accordance with the United Nations designation of the territory Falkland Islands (Malvinas) in languages other than Spanish and Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands) in Spanish. In accordance with the terminology of international law I refer to the six counties in the north of Ireland under UK governance as Northern Ireland. License: Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial No Derivatives Unless otherwise stated, copyright owned by the author Sounding Out Performance drawing in response to the outside environment Maryclare Foá PhD Fine Art 2011 Camberwell College of Arts University of the Arts London Abstract My enquiry focuses on how a drawing, when made in response to the outside environment, might be conditioned by that environment, and in turn how that environment might be influenced by that drawing. Examination of texts by, among others, Bachelard, Merleau-Ponty and Baudelaire have contributed towards understanding ideas about humankind’s physical memory of landscape, phenomenological experience in relation to the outside space, and ideas concerning the interaction between the practitioner and the outside space. Four key issues related to drawing are explored in this research (each is the subject of a chapter in the thesis). Firstly, the practitioner’s stance in the process of drawing is examined, in particular the practitioner’s gesture, which mimics the form of the subject, and performs the subject into being. The practitioner’s position is addressed in relation to how the gaze of the other fashions that position into a performance. Secondly, ‘movement’ is identified as a crucial material component of the process of performance drawing.
