5.2. SUMMARY OF ACCESS PROCEDURES Entry to the meeting venue is by an ID badge. All delegates and participants must wear their ID badges visibly at all times at the meeting venue.

7. TRANSPORT 7.1. TRANSFERS FOR PARTICIPANTS All participants will be provided with transfers from the Airport to the official hotel and vice versa according to their flight details during 4–8 March.

7.2. PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND TAXIS Participants may as well use the taxi services on their own. You can order a taxi at the airport from the taxi desk in the arrivals hall and at the check-in desks at the hotel in the accommodation areas. On request, the cost of a taxi ride may be calculated by the manager in advance. Payment is accepted in Russian rubles only.

8. MEETING FACILITIES 8.1. INFORMATION DESK The Information Desk is located at the meeting venue. It is open from 08:00 to 20:00 daily on 05–07 March 2020. Information Desk personnel is available to supply administrative and logistics information, distribute meeting materials and provide general assistance.

9. GENERAL INFORMATION 9.1. WEATHER Saint Petersburg climate is continental. The average day temperature in March is -2 ºC (28,4 ºF). The night temperature is -5 ºC (23 ºF). Please check the Russian Meteorological Agency website (www.meteoinfo.ru) for the latest weather forecast.

9.2. TIME Saint Petersburg zone: three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +3).

SAINT PETERSBURG | 5–7 MARCH 7 9.3. ELECTRICITY AND WATER SUPPLY The voltage of the electricity network in Russia is 220V. It is recommended to boil tap water before drinking. Preferably, drink bottled water, which can be purchased at the hotel or in any local store.

9.4. SMOKING Russia prohibits smoking in public places: bars and restaurants, theatres, museums and other cultural heritage institutions, as well as in educational institutions.

9.5. CREDIT CARDS Major credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, shops, etc. Visa, MasterCard and American Express may be used at most places but some restaurants and small shops accept cash payments only.

9.6. CURRENCY AND ATMS The official currency of the Russian Federation is the ruble (RUB). All payments on the territory of the Russian Federation must be made in Russian rubles. 9.7. MOBILE PHONE INFORMATION Most modern mobile phones work on several settings capable of using roaming services on different networks. Most GSM phones may be used in Russia supporting the GSM 900 and GSM 1800 or GSM 850 and GSM 1900 protocols. Almost all UMTS phones work on the GSM networks. For roaming the participants need to contact their mobile network operator. In mobile phone shops, participants can buy a sim-card of any Russian mobile phone operator and recharge their mobile phone account.

2 THE STATE HERMITAGE MUSEUM The State Hermitage Museum is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The second-largest art museum in the world, was founded in 1764 when Empress acquired an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. The museum celebrates the anniversary of its founding each year on 7 December, Saint Catherine’s Day. It has been open to the public since 1852. Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise over three million items (the numismatic collection accounts for about one-third of them), including the largest collection

Apart from them, the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya, and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building are also part of the museum. 3 SAINT ISAAC’S CATHEDRAL Saint Isaac’s Cathedral or Isaakievskiy Sobor is a cathedral that currently functions as a museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a of Peter the Great, who had been born on the feast day of that saint. It was originally built as a cathedral but was turned into a museum by the Soviet government in 1931 and has remained a museum ever since. In 2017, the Governor of Saint Petersburg offered to transfer the cathedral back to the Russian Orthodox Church, but this was not accomplished due to the protests of St. Petersburg citizens opposing the offer. 4 MARIINSKY THEATRE The Mariinsky Theatre is a historic theatre of opera and ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Opened in 1860, it became the preeminent music theatre of late 19th-century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres. Through most of the Soviet era, it was known as the Kirov Theatre. Today, the Mariinsky Theatre is home to the Mariinsky Ballet, Mariinsky Opera and Mariinsky Orchestra. Location: 1, Theatre Square

5 THE STATE RUSSIAN MUSEUM The State Russian Museum is the world’s largest collection of Russian art, housed in a unique architectural complex in the historical centre of St. Petersburg. It was the first museum of Russian art, initiated by Emperor Alexander III. Later, in 1895, Emperor Nicholas II signed a decree ordering “The foundation of a special establishment named ‘The Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III’ and the assignment of Mikhailovsky Palace with all outbuildings, services and the garden, specially acquired by the state treasury for this purpose”. In May of same year architect Svinyin started the reconstruction of the palace interiors for accommodating future collections of art. The museum collection contains over 400 000 exhibits covering all major periods and trends in the history of Russian art, all main types and genres, trends and schools of Russian art over more than a thousand years: from the X to the XXI century. 6 PETER AND PAUL FORTRESS The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini’s designs from 1706 to 1740 as a star fortress. In the early 1920s, it was still used as a prison and execution ground by the Bolshevik government. Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. The museum has gradually become virtually the sole owner of the fortress building, except the structure occupied by the Saint Petersburg Mint (Monetniy Dvor). Location: 3, Peter and Paul Fortress

SAINT PETERSBURG | 5–7 MARCH 10 7 CHURCH OF THE SAVIOR ON BLOOD The Church of Resurrection (Savior on Spilled Blood) was built as a historical and memorial center of all Russian people. The Cathedral was built in the memory of Emperor Alexander II, and his reforms, and served a symbol of repentance of the Russian people. The Savior on Spilled Blood is also a historical monument to the tragic events of March 1, 1881. The cathedral boasts a luxurious and rich decor, ornamental architraves, frames, corbels, ceramic tiles, and colored glazed tiles. Five cupolas of the church, some 1000 square meters in area are covered with jewelry enamel. The belfry is decorated with mosaic coats-of-arms of cities and regions of the . 8 KAZAN CATHEDRAL Kazan Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in Saint Petersburg. It was built in 1801–1811 by the architect Andrey Voronikhin by order of Emperor Paul I who wanted the cathedral to resemble St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The cathedral is the monument to glory of Russian arms. The famous Russian Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov, who won the most important campaign of 1812, was buried inside the Kazan Cathedral. In 1932–1991 it housed the Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism. The sacred thing of the cathedral is a copy of an of Our Lady of Kazan. Kazan Cathedral is remarkable for its plan. Half-round colonnade decorates the side façade of the cathedral, not the main one. According to church canons the altar was to face eastwards, the main entrance – westwards Location: 25, Nevsky av.

9 KUNSTKAMERA The Kunstkamera is the first museum in Russia. Established by Peter the Great and completed in 1727, the Kunstkammer Building hosts the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, with a collection of almost 2,000,000 items. It is located on the Universitetskaya Embankment in Saint Petersburg, facing the Winter Palace. Location: 3, Universitetskaya emb.

10 Aurora is a 1900 Russian protected cruiser, currently preserved as a museum ship in Saint Petersburg. Aurora was one of three Pallada-class , built in Saint Petersburg for service in the Pacific. All three ships of this class served during the Russo-Japanese War. Aurora survived the and was interned under US protection in the , and eventually returned to the Baltic Fleet. The second ship, Pallada, was sunk by the Japanese at Port Arthur in 1904. The third ship, Diana, was interned in Saigon after the Battle of the Yellow Sea. One of the first incidents of the in Russia took place on the cruiser Aurora, which reportedly fired the first shot, signalling the beginning of the attack on the Winter Palace. Its permanent collection featuring over 2,800 works by Russian artists, along with more than 40 exciting temporary exhibitions staged by the museum every year, have firmly established it on the list of things to do in St. Petersburg. Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art was repeatedly mentioned as a top choice tourist attraction by Lonely Planet guidebooks; ranks among the top 10 museums in Russia on TripAdvisor; was spotlighted as one of the ‘5 Cultural Gems’ among places to visit in. St. Petersburg by National Geographic, and became the country’s first contemporary art museum to be featured on Google Arts and Culture Project.
